🖤TW SEXUAL ASSAULT🖤
🖤TW SEXUAL ASSAULT🖤
For mental health awareness month I decided to use my platform for good, and openly discuss things that I have been through in an effort to show people that they are not alone.
I was sexually assaulted by an old family friend when I was 16. This man was almost twice my age and he sexually assaulted me in my own home. I didn’t tell anyone apart from my sister, and another family friend, about what had happened until this last year. I kept thinking it was my fault, and that I had done something in the lead up to my assault that had made this man think it was okay. I now know that not a single thing that happened was my fault. It never is. No means no. The thought of opening up terrified me, but doing so has been incredibly healing.
I sat down with my girl Lindsay Ell and we openly discussed sexual assault, and her song Make You; including the incredible Make You Moment from her live stream show back in February.
What I loved about the make you moment is that there were men taking part too. Sexual assault can happen to anyone. Few women talk about it, but even fewer men do and that is heartbreaking. No matter who you are, sexual assault is sexual assault. And sexual assault is any behaviour in a sexual nature that is unwanted.
There are some really great charities and organisations that can help if you just want someone to listen. I have listed them below along with ways to get in contact with them. We are not alone.
- Women's Aid - womensaid.org.uk / [email protected]
- Survivors UK (specifically for male survivors) - survivorsuk.org / 02035983898 / [email protected]
- Victim Support - victimsupport.scot / 0800 160 1985 (Scotland only) / 0808 168 9111 (England and Wales)
- The Survivors Trust - thesurvivorstrust.org / 08088 010 818 / [email protected]
Trust me, talking about it really does help.
I cannot thank Lindsay enough for sitting down with me, and for all of her support since the Make You moment in
