Big Thank you to all who came along to our very first Teenager Autism Gaming Morning and our first for 2024 Mini Gamers afternoon. There were not many of us, yet we had a lot of fun! For those interested (Ginger) signed a petition a while back regarding Carer's Allowance and there was a committee meeting in Parliament last week. I haven't managed to read it all yet and I will put the link to the video in the comments. I have put a few of my own thoughts and observations below too.

Basically this is about raising the earnings threshold for Carer's so they can keep their hand in by working and building their career, increasing opportunities including pensions although the petition is to raise the carers allowance to 35hrs weekly on min pay.

The statistics show that most Carer's are women usually jn the prime of their career and that the current threshold means most cannot afford to work even a few hours weekly if they're professionals. Carer's Allowance is only given if the carer is caring for more than 35hrs weekly, is over 16 and is not in FT education. It will increase to £81.00 in April (£2.31 per hr) Carer's can then earn around £151.00 wkly on top of this from April.

The debate is that even at minimum wage carers are not able to earn a justifiable wage and are way outside cost of living. The only reason most carers survive is that they're living with the person they care for and that person is usually getting benefits such as PIP that can support the household. In other cases a partner might be working yet the person on Carer's misses out on a decent pension pot. (Most carers will only get a tiny state pension as carers allowance pays stamp for them)

It is a total unfairness towards people who give so much and then can end up redundant in society when the person they care for no longer needs that care. Carer's save the Country billions of ££'s annually.

Being a carer is exhausting and isolating too and others that do not have first hand lived experience have no idea how difficult it can be.

There needs to be real change.
