A research team led by Duan Luming at the Institute for Interdisciplinary Information Sciences at Tsinghua University in China has constructed the world’s most powerful ion-based quantum computing system, according to the South China Morning Post. This significant achievement paves the way for scalable quantum computers in the future.

Quantum computers, considered the next frontier of computing, promise faster computation capabilities that could help humanity address challenges in medicine, astronomy, and climate change. They use quantum bits, or qubits, to store information.

Unlike classical bits in silicon-based computers, which can either be in an ‘on’ state or an ‘off’ state, qubits can be both on and off simultaneously while occupying a range of states in between, a phenomenon known as superposition. This allows quantum algorithms to process information much faster than even the world’s fastest supercomputers.

Researchers are exploring various quantum systems to determine the best methods for working with qubits.

In recent years, dozens of Alaskan rivers have turned bright orange due to the release of toxic metals from melting permafrost, according to a new study. This striking contamination, visible from space, poses a serious ecological threat that researchers warn is likely to worsen.

A study published in the journal *Communications Earth & Environment* identified at least 75 orange rivers and streams in an area of Alaska's Brooks Range the size of Texas. Most of these contaminated waterways were first detected during helicopter surveys.

Chemical analyses revealed high levels of zinc, nickel, copper, cadmium, and iron in the orange rivers, with iron giving the water its distinctive color. Additionally, researchers found the water to be unusually acidic, with some smaller streams having a pH as low as 2.3, comparable to lemon juice or vinegar, as reported by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The high metal concentration and acidity are linked to the thawing permafrost, a layer of permanently frozen ground in the Arctic. As climate change causes this ground to melt, minerals trapped for thousands of years are exposed to rainwater, allowing metals to dissolve from the rocks and flow into streams, which then feed larger rivers.

The toxic levels of minerals drastically transform affected habitats, posing a severe threat to most aquatic life. Researchers are particularly concerned about the impact on spawning fish, which could have significant repercussions for U.S. fisheries.

While the exact amount of metal released into the rivers is difficult to quantify, study co-author Brett Poulin, an environmental toxicologist at UC Davis, noted that the rivers must be heavily stained to be visible from space.

Researchers plan follow-up tests this year to further assess the problem's extent. They fear that record-breaking temperatures over the past year have increased permafrost melting, releasing even more metals. With temperatures expected to rise in the coming decades, the situation could deteriorate further.

26/05/2024

The Thwaites Glacier in Antarctica, often referred to as the “Doomsday Glacier,” is facing accelerated melting due to the infiltration of warm ocean water at its base. This phenomenon has been intensifying since the 1980s, causing significant ice loss. Recent radar data highlights that the warm seawater is not just affecting the glacier's surface but is also penetrating underneath it, hastening the melting process.

This accelerated melting increases the risk of the glacier's collapse. If Thwaites Glacier were to collapse fully, it could result in a dramatic rise in global sea levels—potentially up to 10 feet. Such an increase would have profound effects on coastal communities around the world, leading to severe flooding and altering coastlines. This situation underscores the urgency of understanding and mitigating the impacts of climate change to protect vulnerable regions from the potential catastrophic outcomes associated with rising sea levels.

Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla, recently expressed that artificial intelligence will eventually lead to the elimination of all jobs, a shift he believes isn't necessarily negative, as reported by CNN. Speaking remotely at the Viva Tech event in Paris, Musk envisioned a future where having a job would be "optional." He stated, “If you want to do a job that’s kind of like a hobby, you can do a job. But otherwise, AI and the robots will provide any goods and services that you want.”

Musk suggested that a “universal high income” would be required to support this new paradigm, distinguishing it from universal basic income (UBI), which is a government initiative that provides a fixed amount of money to everyone regardless of their income. However, he did not provide further details on how this universal high income would be implemented.

He pointed out the rapid progression of AI capabilities, emphasizing that regulators, companies, and users are still working out how to utilize the technology responsibly. Musk assured that in this future, “there would be no shortage of goods or services.”
