Really proud of this production! Love the song of course.

I usually don't like dogmas and principles guiding my actions in studio, but this time I took on a dogma: I took everything I like about 80s pop clichés (which is not a whole lot). And I worked really hard to make it work. Glad I did! I think that this chorus sounds really fresh and catchy.

The arrangement actually turned out a bit fashionable, because it's a bit like what they call 'Synthwave'.

We’ve done a 4 part video series about our Pihka Is My Name live electronic music setup. Might be fun to look at if you’re into synth gear, or just want to see how we’ve made the tech work for us.

Here’s the first part, where we’re doing an overview on what gear we decided to use for our gigs this year. Our gear is mostly Elektron and Korg, with some not-so-well-known pieces and some DIY ones. We do the music computerless/dawless, but we’re using a laptop to drive our visuals that are in sync with the music.

We’ll be uploading all episodes on our Youtube channel within a week, so stay tuned!

Final week of 2021! This is a great tradition, wonderful stuff on that hashtag. Brings you lots of ideas for your own music.

This is a jam we did spontaneously while filming a demo of our live set for this spring (yep, it’ll mostly be streams). Lasse is on a very distorted Analog Rytm and Henna is on the piano. We’re also using an iPad for granular looping. Borderlands Granular is great for that! Set it up inside a mixer app called AUM and spice it up with reverb like Kleverb and you’re up for sweetness.

This jam started with Lasse testing out his different guitar pedals, most of them self-soldered. The Elektron Analog Rytm MKII has individual outputs for most of its tracks, which is great because you can run them through external processors like guitar pedals! Super fun.

We had a random loop playing and Henna started playing her piano on top of it and yep, that’s this Monday’s jam!

Thom Yorke was the inspiration for this week's Monday Jam. We love his Anima LP from 2019, it’s got some amazingly beautiful electronic sounds. A lot of Elektron gear was used on it.

The Eurorack is sequenced from the Analog Rytm MKII, and it is layered by Korg Volca Keys and Neutral Labs Elmyra. Everything goes through the Rytm’s compressor, which in itself is a lovely thing.

We are big fans of The Mandalorian series and even more so of Ludwig Göransson’s music on it! This is our take on the title track.

All sound is from hardware synths, recorded & filmed live in one take. They were sequenced from Ableton Live, and a little bit of mixing was done afterwards. But no overdubs. If you’d like to know more, there’s a Making Of video (link in the comments).

Gear used: Elektron Analog Rytm MKII & Digitone, Korg Minilogue & Volca Keys, a broken Juno-106, Yamaha upright piano, Eurorack Modular, lots of EFX pedals.

Jetzt ist es offiziell! We have just signed a music publishing agreement with Steam Music in Germany.

Meaning, Steam Music will represent and help PihkaSound music reach more and more listeners.

Official info:

The Helsinki-based production duo PihkaSound have entered into a music publishing deal with the Berlin-based Steam Music. Also the duo’s project Pihka Is My Name’s tracks are going to be represented in the agreement.

The main goal is to land sync placements in international cinema, games and TV productions and gain more listeners and viewers to PihkaSound art.

PihkaSound consists of producers Lasse Turunen and Henna Helasvuo. Turunen is mostly responsible for the beats and the sounds, Helasvuo for the harmonies and the arrangements. The duo works mostly “out of the box”, meaning for example analogue synths, piano, cello etc.

Pihka Is My Name is their electronic music group, fronted by an animation character called Pihka. She is an abandoned imaginary friend, who sets off on an adventure on her own. She is looking at the World as an outsider, meets its people and sees their problems, the most pressing of which is the climate emergency we are all facing.

The debut single ‘Binaries’ and its video directed by Jussi Turunen came out in March 2020. Character concept design is made by Elli Maanpää, who has also directed the group’s sophomore video ‘+-’. A debut album will follow in early 2021.

Steam Music is a modern, innovative, active and creative music publishing-, promotion-, consulting-, distribution- & sync-company, established and founded in 2013 and run by experienced music business executive Andrew Campbell.

Andrew’s work experience includes time in senior positions at Sony Music Germany, SPV Records, Koch International and V2 Records. He also worked as Director of Development at the Colisium International Music Convention (Russia) and founded Gordeon Music Promotion.

Steam Music has a global reach and provides various services to artists, composers and labels including radio promotion, sync licensing, A&R consultancy, marketing services and copyright exploitation.
