Best advice: don't read newspaper until you achieve your goals. The stupid things you watch online and read on newspaper actually make you worry about them by diverting you from your main goals. If there is any essential news then you would automatically get to know it's conclusion from someone. Read books that help you to develop skills. You will see many people having tremendous amount of general knowledge trying to act like smartasses, just wait and see how they end up.
