Had a great response to this week’s episode of the No-Till Market Garden Podcast with @doctorfarmerbrother and in particular to this video of Nazirahk harvesting rice that I shared in our stories and thought I should share here.
If you’re interested, this is the Iseki 4 row harvester which Nazirahk says is also good for standing grains such as wheat. I know I am very curious about small scale grains, so I imagine there are a few others out there like 🤔. There are more videos like this over at the @doctorfarmerbrother feed.
A couple years back, my buddy David Ladnier (@dlextown), came and helped us harvest for a day. David is an engineer and one of the biggest inefficiencies he saw was with our root washing station. So he designed a foot-operated root washer for us to free up our hands and speed up the job. Now, a job that used to take a few hours every week is down to a quick and painless half-hour task. Anyway, in true @notillgrowers fashion we‘re keeping the design open-sourced so all the details, pieces and parts are at our youtube channel this morning for you to play with if you so desire. Huge thanks to David and to our patreon members who make this sort of work possible and enable us to keep it free. 🙌 If you like it, maybe I can get David to help me improve other jobs/tools around the farm with simple designs like this. Let us know! Also, I address what we do with the waste water in the video at YouTube.
Your Sunday video this week is all about the static aerated compost system we've been working on (huge shoutout to @livingrootscomposttea and @dlextown for their guidance).
The idea here is to create a system that generates organic compliant compost without turning and possibly speeds up the composting process to further supplement our compost needs.

in this week's Sunday video I try my best to simplify the art of amending soil. It's a huge subject, but I give you the best advice I can. I do also briefly touch on KNF and JADAM and Biodynamics, etc. and the four or so practices I think are necessary to make those and anything else you add to the soil effective.
Huge thanks to our patreon members for the inspiration and support for this video. They are the ones that make it possible to create (hopefully) valuable content that is free and available to anyone. 🙏

Your Sunday video this week is all about farmers' market theory, strategy, and set-ups. HUGE thank you to everyone who sent in a picture of their market set up-- I tried to get as many in there as I could.
Check it out at the No-Till Growers YouTube Channel. And huge 🤗 to our patreon members for making it possible!
I got a chance to make compost tea with a pro this past week when @livingrootscomposttea came through town. And so that’s what’s up for your Sunday Video this week: compost tea making with someone who does it professionally.
See what he does (or possibly doesn’t) do differently from you. Great for beginners as well. Troy talks equipment, microbial foods, and more. Follow @livingrootscomposttea and listen to his What’s Brewing Podcast wherever you get podcasts.
Check it out at the no-till growers YouTube Channel and HUFE thanks to our patreon members for making this work possible!
Join me in Northern Louisiana next month for a three day intensive?
I was invited to do a deep dive into no-till by @camptifieldofdreams and it will be super fun and nerdy!
Link is in the profile. See ya there!
Super fascinating and nerdy podcast up this morning with soil scientist Christine Sprunger, head of the Soil Health and Ecosystem Ecology Lab at Michigan State University.
Christine and host Natalie really dive deep into the often misunderstood or under-appreciated role of nematodes in soil and plant health. Christine has also done extensive research on plant roots and they get into perennial vs annual plant roots differences, as well as nitrogen and carbon relationships. Among a bunch of other things!
Huge shoutouts to @realorganicproject @johnnys_seeds @rimolgreenhouse and @tilth.soil . And to our patrons... y'all are amazing.

Special treat for you on the podcast today! Not only did I get the absolute privilege of interviewing Max Epstein from @krautgaart but we also did it in video form. So not only can you just listen as usual on our podcast feed, but if you go to our YouTube channel, you can watch the full video and see some of the photos of the things he is discussing such as their germination tables, their cooperative model, their pay-what-you-can (SoliBa) CSA, and, of course, their #nodig methods!
Huge shoutouts to @marbleseedorg @highmowingorganicseeds @organicgrowersschool and @highcountrynews. And of course, you patreon members. You rock. 100 out of 100. Every. Dang. Time.

After our cabin burned in the 2020 wildfires the fine folks at @tinywoodstove reached out and offered a wood stove for whatever eventual rebuild might happen. That stove has been sitting in my shop for almost 4 years, but this past week I finally got to install it.
Thanks for the stove, y’all. Fits the space nicely. And having it up and running is a satisfying benchmark of progress as this cabin build nears completion.
Btw, water jet cutting was done by @aproellc . Check them out. They do some really interesting work. Oh, and the stove is their 3kw model and the cabin is 200 square feet.
