What now? 🙋🏻‍♂️

How do you plan on practicing Serbian after completing a basic course?

Should you take another course to learn more or further practice what you know?

The time has come to leave the nest! 🦅

If you want to keep on learning in the classroom conditions, that’s fine. But the classroom can’t exchange your interaction with the real world.

If you have the minimum understanding of Serbian, I encourage you to get out there and start talking with people. 🙌🏼 Even if in the beginning it means only listening to them!

🚧You don’t feel ready?
You probably never will and that’s fine. Let’s not make it an obstacle.

Let me know in the comments how was your first interaction in Serbian. ♥️

The worst problem is the one you are not aware of. Yes, even though Serbian vowels are fairly easy to pronounce and there are only 5 of them, many learners struggle with pronunciation.

This can happen for several reasons:

🎧You don't have enough daily input of the Serbian language you can understand. This usually means you don't listen to the Serbian language on your day to day basis or communicate in Serbian.
🎧 Your native language has more vowels than Serbian.
🎧 You mostly rely on English learning Serbian.
🎧 You are not aware that vowels in Serbian can be long and short.
🎧 You don't pronounce vowels always.

🛠️ How to fix it:

🎧 Find out everything you need to know about vowels in Serbian through the link https://bit.ly/3nUMDGq
🎧 Dedicate 15 minutes per day for your Serbian language input. Make sure you can understand most of the language you are listening to so focus on language podcasts or videos adapted to your level.
🎧 Practice what you hear and record yourself. Sometimes listening to yourself while speaking and listening to yourself recorded sounds like two different people.
🎧 Sing in Serbian as much as you can.

BONUS:

Pay special attention to Serbian words which look like English words and their pronunciation! These are words like: paradajz, ideja, program.

Find Serbian podcasts and videos adapted to your level on our YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/

If you don't pronounce Serbian vowels correctly, you run a risk of being missunderstood. Read this guide and never make the same mistakes again.

Hello March! 🌷

Say goodbye to February by learning even more expressions about love. 💘

I showed you how to say 'I love you' and similar expressions in Serbian, but there are many ways to express love and care without using the exact words.

💫 Let's learn 10 ways to say 'I love you' in Serbian without saying 'I love you'

1. JAVI SE KAD STIGNEŠ 📱
Pronunciation: /javi se kad stigneʂ/
Meaning: Call me when you get to wherever is your destination 🙃

2. MISLIM NA TEBE 🤔
Pronunciation: /mislim na tebe/
Meaning: I'm thinking of you

3a. UZEO SAM TI NEŠTO U PRODAVNICI 👨🏽‍🦱
Pronunciation: /uzeo sam ti neʂto u prodavnitsi/

3b. UZELA SAM TI NEŠTO U PRODAVNICI 👩🏼‍🦱
Pronunciation: /uzela sam ti neʂto u prodavnitsi/
Meaning: I got you something at the shop. 🛒

4. MOŽE JEDAN ZAGRLJAJ
Pronunciation: /moʐe jedan zagrʎaj/
Meaning: Do you need a hug?

5. NEDOSTAJEŠ*
Pronunciation: /nedostajeʂ/
Meaning: I miss you

*I guess you heard of NEDOSTAJEŠ MI - which would be the correct form. However, if you want to speak in a non-formal way, especially if you're texting, you can just say NEDOSTAJEŠ, and the MI (to me) is already implied. And it sounds cooler. 😉

6. KAKO JE BILO DANAS?
Pronunciation: /kako je bilo danas/
Meaning: Something along the lines of 'how was your day?'

7. JE L' TE NEŠTO MUČI? 😟
Pronunciation: /je l te neʂto mut͡ʂi/
Meaning: Is something bothering you?

8. DRŽI SE 🙌
Pronunciation: /drʐi se/
Meaning: Hang on

9. JEDVA ČEKAM DA TE VIDIM 💓
Pronunciation: /jedva t͡ʂekam da te vidim/
Meaning: Can't wait to see you.

10. MOGU NEKAKO DA TI POMOGNEM?
Pronunciation: /mogu nekako da ti pomognem/
Meaning: Can I help you somehow?

These are expressions of love and care from people in my surroundings.

What about you? What expressions do you know?

Let me hear your ideas in the comments. Can't wait to read them!✨

✨This is a VIW ✨ A Very Important Word: MESTO 📍

📚Can have many meanings

The most confusing of the meanings: space (not outer space 🌌) 'cause you will usually see it in the genitive form.

Ima li tu mesta za mene? ENG Is there space for me?

Imaš mesta za sastanak u ponedeljak? Do you have some space for a meeting on Monday?

❗When you use it to describe a place remember MESTO is neutral gender, so your adjective should be too

Go through the examples in the post and you're all set.

MA DAJ 🤌 A phrase necessary for you to speak like a proper Serb! 🙌

This expression is what will make you stand out from the crowd and enter the "wow, you sound like a native" world. 👀 This kind of phrases make out their own meaning, so 'daj' in this case doesn't mean 'give'.

Use it when you hear or see something shocking, difficult to believe, or just irritating. 😲

Best thing about this phrase: it is self-explanatory. You don't need to use it in a sentence. You can, but it also makes a sentence just by itself.

*situation: you caught the 4th red light in a row*
You can just say: Ma daj!

If you speak or are familiar with 🇮🇹 and the expression "ma dai", then you don't see much difference here, right?

Tell me, have you ever used this expression in Serbian?
If yes, what was the situation?

Have you heard the news and what does it mean for you? 🤔

Well, if you travel from Serbia to Slovenia, Italy, or further, now there is only one border to cross. Great news, ha?

What's more, if you travel to Croatia, you don't need to think about changing your 💸 to anything other than euros.

Did you watch Netflix's Wednesday? Or shall I say Sreda? 😁

During the holidays I finally got the time to watch it. Even though my childhood version is the one with Christina Ricci and Anjelica Huston, I quite liked this one too. 🫰

So, I thought, why not make a guide for you guys, since there are so many interesting names. Which one is your favorite?

P.S. While watching I realized the father's name is Gomez Addams, which sounds strange to me 'cause Gomez is usually a last name. It also reminded me of the time we were crossing the Slovenian border and the border person was looking for someone named Alonso Oviedo. Later we realized he was referring to Chris, but just read some random words from his ID. 🤭

Do you have a funny border story?

Yesterday we talked about chestnuts 🧆 Delicious, right?

I mentioned that in Serbia during the winter it's typical to have "pečeni kesteni". You eat them "klot" - without condiments.

Check out the definition below to see what this word really means.👇

Now that I think of it, it wasn't easy to translate it into English in one word. Do you have something similar to "klot" in your language? Let me know in the comments.🖍
