IX BALAM: Marta Orellana is a Guatemalan born; Toronto based designer of mixed ancestry. Inspired by her cultural heritage, inspiration is derived from both urban and rural life in all of the Americas. As an interdisciplinary artist Marta weaves the cosmovision of her peoples into contemporary time and space. brand ethos: IX BALAM is fashion rooted in the ancestral legacy Maya culture. It is the power of the jaguar that walks with balance between the feminine and masculine energy of the universe. This duality is explored through freedom of expression in one of kind pieces. Ethically sourced and up-cycled materials combined with Maya elements such as weavings and embroidery merge to create conscious fashion that is inclusive of size, gender and ethnicity. Our cosmology teaches us that our legacy belongs to everyone, therefore there is a place for everyone in it.
