Vanier residents gathered today to pay tribute to Canada's servicemen and women for their sacrifices and their care of duty.
The War Memorial in Nepean was a gathering place this morning to mark the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Cadets joined Bells Corners Legion members, reservists with the Cameron Highlanders of Ottawa, Girls Guides of Canada and Scouts Canada groups for the tribute to military veterans, past and present.

SOS Vanier rally
SOS Vanier stopped Jim Watson during his tour at the Le Festin de l'Est Beechwood East Feast on Sept. 9 to talk about the The Salvation Army in Ottawa's proposal to build a shelter at 333 Montreal Rd.
The SA's first - and only consultation - on the proposal will take place this Wednesday, Sept. 13 at the Ottawa Conference and Event Centre, 200 Coventry Rd.
An open house and consultation will take place from 1 to 8 p.m.

Kumo awakens
La Machine's Kumo woke up to a crowd of thousands last night atop Notre Dame Cathedral.
The horse-dragon stands 12 metres tall, five metres wide and weighs 45 tonnes. It’s made of wood and steel and is able to trot, gallop, rear and lie down. Long Ma can also spit fire from its mouth and blow smoke from its nostrils. Resting, the spider is 5.7 metres high and six metres wide, but can reach 13 metres tall when crawling. Fully outstretched, she measures 20 metres long; she weighs 38 tonnes.

Five days before Canada celebrates its sesquicentennial, 150 new Canadians celebrated their newly acquired citizenship.
For the Lubuto-Bwira family, the June 26 ceremony marked the end of 14 years of statelessness. The family fled the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country in Central Africa, and lived as refugees in Uganda, East Africa, for 11 years. The family landed in Canada on Dec. 8, 2011.

Ottawa Comiccon welcomed more than 42,000 fans and collectors at the EY Centre during its three-day convention from May 12 to 14.
Residents from across the city pitched in to assist with sandbagging efforts in the Britannia community today. While the berm along the Ottawa River is helping, basements in low-lying areas are flooded and boat launches have now been barricaded though residents are nervous as the river continues to rise.
Gas leak snarls downtown Ottawa
GAS LEAK UPDATE:
A light-rail construction worker who was on site when a gas leak occurred in downtown Ottawa around 2 p.m. today says there was a loud hissing noise, prompting a quick evacuation of the construction site.

Firefighters battle rowhouse fire
Between 65 and 70 people were left homeless after a fire spread through a row of townhouses in Nepean on March 12.
Firefighters spent hours that afternoon battling the four-alarm blaze on Northview Road. The fire affected 42 units, causing between $3 and $3.5-million worth of damage.
No injuries have been reported.
LIVE: During the year's first Art Battle - a live painting event with a competitive twist - local artists race against the clock at Arts Court Theatre with only 20 minutes to create an original painting. After each of three rounds the audience votes for their favourite painting. At the end of the night, the paintings are auctioned off.
