Sisters Julie and Cindy Delahunt have decided not to reopen their landmark business, Dunrobin Village Meat and Grocery, when the Dunrobin Plaza reopens its doors more than two years after it was damaged in the 2018 tornado.

This marks the end of their 32 years in business together, following in the entrepreneurial footsteps of their parents and generations of the Youghusband family before them.

There was more than one reason that factored into their decision. They also chose not to relocate elsewhere because that corner in Dunrobin was theirs, they say. Though they'll miss their staff and longtime regular customers, they feel they've made the right decision.

In plaza news, the co-owner says he is looking for an anchor tenant now. He's hoping for a similar business model to the grocery and meat shop. The Blueprint Properties builder says the plaza just needs a hydro hookup and interior partitioning, which will depend on tenant needs. The builder is also negotiating to rent space in the plaza.

Constance Bay’s Melissa Lepage watched another chapter of her life close this morning with the demolition of her family home.
“I didn’t even know what I would feel. Looking at it it’s like I really don’t have a home now.”

Though painful, it is a necessary step towards eventually rebuilding. Since evacuating during the 2019 floods, the family has moved to several different addresses. It has not been ideal for Lepage's husband Sylvain who has a rare, progressive and incurable form of dementia.

Today was also emotional for her son Nick and his wife Micaela. He was just five when the family moved there in 2003. “This felt like home forever.” After the flood, he tried to salvage as much as possible from the house to alleviate some of the expense of rebuilding.

Dunrobin community leader Greg Patacairk, who has been helping the family, is determined to get construction going. “There will be a house starting in the spring."

He estimates $70K is needed to top up the $30K in the GoFundMe, $110K from the insurance company plus disaster relief from the provincial government. In kind donations of building materials and labour are also welcome, he says.

Lepage says the notes and messages she's received from donors - many of them complete strangers - has made the family feel they are not so alone in their struggle. She plans to keep them in a scrapbook. "Those mean so much."

West Carleton firefighters rescued the driver of a tractor trailer that collided with a car carrier on Hwy. 417 at Panmure Road on Dec. 1 just before 2 a.m.

The force of the collision caused one of the cars on the trailer to crush the cab of the tractor trailer, trapping the driver, according to the Ottawa fire department.

Firefighters used specialized extrication tools to remove the door and pry the truck’s dash off the driver’s legs. Ottawa paramedics took over patient care.

Firefighters discovered several jugs with chemical solvents and adhesives were leaking from the tractor trailer and called in the department’s hazmat team to contain the spill.

The transport truck was eventually towed away and the highway was reopened just before 5 a.m.

Firefighters battled a barn fire at 2317 Diamondview Rd. in the Carp area this morning.

Multiple 911 calls began coming in at 8:19 a.m. Firefighters arrived at 8:30 and the roof of the burning barn collapsed minutes later. They worked to prevent the blaze from spreading to nearby structures, and helped move equipment and vehicles from a neighbouring storage shed, according to the department. Tanker vehicles shuttled water to large reservoirs at the scene. The fire was declared under control at 9:26 a.m.

A fire investigator was dispatched to determine the cause and source of the fire.

The Ottawa Paramedic Service - Service paramédic d'Ottawa treated one man for smoke inhalation, and report that they transported a man in his 20s to a local hospital.

It's not every day you get to thank some of the people who saved your life.

Travis Vaughan, his wife Jenn and brother Tyler reunited with their heroes at the Ottawa Paramedic Service - Service paramédic d'Ottawa headquarters earlier this week.

Vaughan was snowmobiling near Burnt Lands Road west of Upper Huntley and northwest of Corkery last December when he hit something under the snow and rolled his sled. His leg was seriously wounded and he was suffering significant blood loss, paramedics said in a recent statement.

He remained on the line with an ambulance communications officer who dispatched paramedics to the location and also directed him to use a belt as a tourniquet to prevent further blood loss when direct pressure wasn’t working.

Minutes later the phone died. By then Vaughan had decided to drag himself back to his house about 300 metres away. He was accompanied by his dog who had heard him calling for help.

Vaughan’s wife and brother administered first aid just before emergency responders located him thanks to the information he’d relayed to the ambulance dispatcher, the service said.

An Ornge air ambulance landed on Burnt Lands Road and Vaughan was transferred into the care of critical care paramedics. He was airlifted to the Ottawa Hospital Trauma Centre.

“We are very grateful to have met Mr. Vaughan, his wife Jenn and brother Tyler almost one year after this fateful day by facilitating this meet-your-responder opportunity,” the paramedic service said.

Dave Creighton, an icon of the Village of Carp, is being honoured today with a drive-through memorial at the Carp fairgrounds, featuring an incredible display of antique vehicles, one of his passions during the fair, and the golf cart he always drove around the village.

Dave passed away Nov. 9 from pancreatic cancer at age 69. He was a fixture at the fairgrounds, watering the flowers, helping out at the ball diamonds and the outdoor rink. People say he always stopped to say hello and would jump at the chance to offer a helping hand.

Tom Vance was a teenager when he watched as, one after the other, his friends went off to war. “The call to go in the air force was getting louder and louder,” he said, now 98 years old and the only living war-time Spitfire pilot from his squadron.

He grew up in Kinburn and later Woodlawn, where his father owned Vance’s General Store. He also enjoyed summers at
his family’s cottage in MacLaren’s Landing.

He earned his wings in 1943 and was in Halifax two weeks later waiting for a troop ship. He arrived in England in June. In January 1945 he was assigned to a squadron in Holland and flew daily missions, most of them over enemy territory and too often through ground fire.

After the war came to an end, he knew without a doubt that he was destined for home, while others chose to stay in the military. Vance said he had a girlfriend to get home to. He married in Edna within months of returning.

As a member of the RCAF Association, he has participated in many ceremonies over the years. This year, of course, Remembrance Day is different. But Vance, whose memory is perfect, will, as always, think of the people he served with, the friends who sacrificed their lives. “Things like that are pretty hard to forget,” he said.

Carole Ittermann, a retired farmer from Carp, has hit the jackpot, winning $250K in an Instant Double Diamond lottery game.

She isn't planning to do any big spending for now.

"We will put it in the bank until we can visit more of the world," she said at the OLG Prize Centre in Toronto.

The winning ticket was purchased at the Petro Canada on Terry Fox Drive in Kanata.

The Dunrobin Plaza is really taking shape.

We stopped by this week for a photo update, and saw that the builders are installing the exterior brick. The company said in late summer that it hoped to finish in October. It wasn't long before that was updated to November.
