This month, we’re excited to introduce you to a 93-year-old woman who has lived in our community for 46 years.
“I remember when Mount Royal was a sandy bare hill — it’s hard to believe that all of the trees here have been planted,” she added. “It’s been interesting to see the neighbourhood and skyline change over the years.”
Neighbours, meet Patricia Moore! As you can imagine, Pat has had a multitude of neighbours over the years, as houses have changed hands. “And despite living here for over 40 years, there weren’t a lot of people I socialized with.” When her husband passed away just over six years ago, she became a widowed senior living alone.
When Pat was recently hospitalized, the community that ralli

ed around her was not something she saw coming. “I was unaware that I had a reservoir of goodwill in my community,” she chuckled. She needed temporary help and her neighbours, who lead very busy lives, organized assistance for her while she recuperated. “I didn’t even ask,” added Pat, “it was spontaneous and has continued.” From visiting Pat in the hospital, driving her home and bringing her food, to shovelling her driveway, running errands and accompanying her on walks — her neighbours quickly became her support system. “They should be heralded as role models in the community,” she added.
“It’s truly amazing how everyone came together to support me during recovery,” added Pat..” And for that, she’s eternally grateful.

T his month, we’re excited to introduce you to two ladies who were originally connected through work. It’s been over 22 years since Gizella Davis and Jemma Stephenson first met and over the years they have become dear friends who know each other inside and out. “Maybe even better than we know ourselves,” they laughed.
Let’s meet them!

Gizella has worked as a Realtor for many years now. ”My husband and I purchased our property in Britannia in 1997". As lovers of the great outdoors, they naturally bought it for the mountain views. “Then, I tasked my husband and son with designing our forever home,” she added. “It couldn’t have turned out any better.”

Jemma is also a Realtor. In her free time, you will likely find her walking her dogs at the off-leash park, playing video games, building legos, watching movies or cheering on her son’s ball hockey team.

This duo first met in 2002 at Royal LePage Foothills. Gizella was working as a realtor and Jemma was the front-office receptionist at the time. Naturally, having spent so much time together, this duo has become incredibly close. “Gizella is like a second mother to me,” said Jemma. “We go shopping and eat lunch together pretty much every day.” In fact, Jemma often brings freshly baked goods to work. “She makes a delicious morning glory muffin — they’re always a hit,” Gizella laughed.
And while they have lots in common, their personalities also balance each other out. Where Gizella would remind others to ‘treat all people the best you can,’ Jemma would encourage them to ‘stay true to themselves.’ “As Maya Angelou says,” she added, “if you’re always trying to be normal, you will never know how amazing you can be.”

If you see these friends out and about in the community, be sure to give them a friendly wave. They would love to meet

WELCOME to Spring! This month we’re excited to introduce you to The KEYES.
Ryan and Jenny have lived in Calgary most of their lives. Although Ryan was born in Halifax, his family moved here when he was 3 years old. Jenny’s family moved here from Regina when she was only 6 months old. They met each other while attending Henry Wise Wood High School and reconnected shortly after graduating. They have been together ever since!
Ryan and Jenny have gone through life side-by-side and will be celebrating 22 years of marriage and over the years have experienced many personal and professional accomplishments. Ryan specializes in Prosthetic Dentistry and has said “It’s something I’m really passionate about!”. In October 2013, Ryan decided to open the doors to Key Prosthodontics. Jenny had been a stay-at-home-mom up until four years ago; she has since returned to work at Key Prosthodontics where she manages and supports the office.
The Keyes have lived in the Elbow Park community for nearly three years now and have really come to love it. “We appreciate that we’re so close to downtown without feeling like we’re in a big city”. “ It is incredibly quiet and peaceful here and of course, we can’t forget about all the nearby restaurants and shops!”. Not only do they enjoy how close they are to Ryan’s dental office in Mission, but they love walking the neighbourhood with their two furry friends, Duke, and Buster.
The next time you see this family out and about in the community, be sure to give them a friendly wave.

Happy New Year and welcome to 2024!

We are pleased to announce that this year we have expanded the territory of our magazine – Neighbours of Elbow Park, as well as changed the name of the magazine.

It has been our pleasure serving the community of Elbow Park for 9 years, telling their stories and helping bring neighbours and local businesses together.

This year we welcome the community of SCARBORO to our publication! Scarboro is a small village-like community located in Calgary’s downtown west. As an ‘Olmsted designed community’ they have lots of history and we look forward to sharing their stories and pictures.

We are also changing the name of our publication from Neighbours of Elbow Park to NEIGHBOURS OF MT. ROYAL. Our Community Magazine will continue to be delivered to homeowners in Elbow Park, Mount Royal, Upper Mount Royal and now the SCARBORO area.

This month we're excited to introduce you to an inspiring local resident who is the wearer of many different hats. He is a musician, educator, entrepreneur, adventurer, gardener and father. Neighbours of Elbow Park, meet Scott Arnold.
Scott was born and raised in Toronto and has had a deep love for music for as long as he can remember. Immediately after graduating high school, he attended the Royal Conservatory of Music at the University of Toronto.
While he has mostly performed as a classical guitarist, he is also a banjoist, trombonist, Composer, and arranger. To date, he has recorded two albums and has published several book collections related to guitar theory and practice.
If he had a motto, it would be “if you can't beat the fear, just do it scared”.

If you see Scott out and about with his pups, tending to his garden or at his local Art Hub, be sure to introduce yourself. He would love to meet you!

MEET the Smiths
T his month, we’re featuring a dedicated family of doctors who value spending quality time together. Despite their incredibly busy lives, they enjoy the many perks and amenities of their own backyard and always make time to explore new places. “We love living in Elbow Park,” they agreed. “The quiet, calming vibe of the community makes it feel like you’re in the country, with the amazing amenities of a big city.” Let’s meet Jennifer and Miller Smith!
Jennifer and Miller met while attending the University of Calgary in 1998. Jennifer has been the co-owner of Impact Orthodontics since 2011, located in the community of Midnapore, along with Dr. Dena. “We are the only female partnership orthodontic practice in the city and are excited to open our second location in Britannia this fall!
Miller, on the other hand, is the co-owner of South Calgary Oral Surgery and Mahogany Oral Surgery and has been practicing in the city since 2011.
When the Smiths aren’t busy enjoying their own community, their favourite thing to do as a family is travel. “We don’t usually go to the same places over and over,” explained Miller. “Instead, we love to explore new locations.” In fact, they recently returned from a trip to the Galapagos, where they were able to take in the wonders of wildlife and meet some amazing people.
If this family had a motto, it would be to, ‘Be kind and have fun.” If you see the Smiths at one of their local businesses, at an extracurricular activity, floating down the river, or jet setting on their next adventure, be sure to give them a wave!

MEET the Loves

This month we are taking a peek into the local Love family. These life-long Alberta residents are no strangers to the city. Jamie grew up in St Albert while Jim grew up on a farm in Northern Alberta near Grande Prairie but moved into the area 10 yrs ago and have come to absolutely love the neighbourhood and community that comes with it.
Jamie and Jim lead a very active lifestyle but have found the time to grow their family. Lucas is a spirited boy full of energy and knows what he likes, which is anything with four wheels !
Believe it or not, they started their own wine label, Hello Someday Wine, in the fall of 2019. “When we started our label, we were finally saying ‘hello’ to our ‘someday’”. They launched their first two wines during the pandemic and added another two wines last year. They are amazed by the local support they ‘ve received and hope that when others hear their story, it will inspire them to chase their dreams too.
If you see this couple around the community, be sure to give them a wave. They would love to meet you!

MEET MARIE-EVE & JEFF
This month’s feature family has covered a lot of ground in the nearly four years they’ve spent together – from travelling the world, navigating a pandemic and moving into their new home. “And with all of that”, they agreed, “comes a lot of growth.”
As a long term entrepreneur she is the visionary and CEO behind Centred Within – a soul-centred psychotherapy and psychospiritual development practice. Jeff is a long-time student and teacher of ancient wisdom traditions. The couple crossed paths at one of Jeff’s meditation courses, put on by his organization Retooling the World in early 2019 and their connection was instantaneous. The couple got married this past autumn in Britannia during the Harvest Moon.
Driven and motivated by being of service, Marie-Eve and Jeff hope to inspire their neighbours to make a difference. “We believe that every single person carries gifts and possesses their own unique genius”, they agreed, “ and that our fulfillment and the world’s needs, hopefully intersect.”
If you see this couple around the community, in the mountains or jetting off for their next getaway, be sure to give them a wave. They would love to meet you!
Neighbours of Elbow Park, meet Marie-Eve Bonneau and Jeff Dunphy!

MEET THE STANFIELDS !

This month’s feature family met in the 1990s while the couple was working together. They eloped, got married in Thailand, and have spent nearly three decades side-by-side. “The early days of our relationship almost feel prehistoric,” the couple laughed. “During the first ten years of our relationship, a long-distance phone call went from 60 cents a minute to free — and now we have teenage children who have never used a landline and don’t know what a long-distance charge is.”
The couple shares a love for restoration projects. “Mike is currently restoring a 1967 Volkswagen single cab truck,” Lee explained. “Not only that, but we recently renovated our 1910 home — restoring and reusing the chimney bricks for our backyard patio.” While the project was a huge success, it came with some interesting surprises. Aside from finding all kinds of abandoned honeycomb while demolishing their front porch, they came across old bricks while digging in the backyard. “We even had a 99-year-old lady ask for a tour,” Lee explained, “as she had lived here as a teenager

MEET Leah Verstraete

This month’s feature resident, Leah, is a successful business owner, humanitarian, adventurer and on overall overachiever. She graduated from a private dental college before she turned 20 and opened the doors to her own practice before turning 30 – living proof that hard work and perseverance pay off. Not only that, but she still finds time to cook, travel, stay active and more. Let’s meet this goal driven gal !

Originally from Bragg Creek, Leah moved to Calgary with her mom and sister during grade school. She attended Cochrane High School and within one week of graduation moved to Toronto for an 18-month dental program at the Toronto college of Registered Dental Hygienists and Auxiliaries.

When Lea isn’t busy working, volunteering or cooking, she loves to travel, with Phoenix and Maui at the top of her “favourite destinations” list. If you run into her on the community pathways or in the chair, be sure to say hello!

MEET THE WOLACHS

The Wolach family moved to Elbow Park 13 years ago and have built a beautiful life together. “We wanted our kids to be able to walk to school,” the couple explained, “and grow up in a community that was inclusive and felt like a small town.” The family loves the trees, the walkability and access to the river here – “it makes me feel like I’m back home,” said Jo. While their children are now all grown up, Jo-Anne and Lahav don’t see themselves leaving anytime soon.
Volunteering is also a huge part of Jo’s life. With a passion to make sports better for everyone, both at the provincial and national level, she has spent many years serving on the Nordiq Ski World board. Jo is also heavily involved in fundraising for the organization – encouraging all cross-country skiers to help increase the accessibility to quality trials in both urban and rural settings
If you run into them at a volunteering event, on the river or on the hill, be sure to introduce yourself!

This month’s feature resident has travelled all over the country for her career. In fact, she moved to Calgary last year with her boyfriend after accepting a radio host position here in the city. “The community has been so welcoming to us,” she explained. “We can see ourselves here for a long time.” And while the couple has already shared many wonderful memories together, moving from Edmonton to Calgary might just be their most memorable yet. Neighbours of Elbow Park, meet Juliette Nunes!

Last year, Juliette accepted a job offer in Calgary with 98.5 Virgin Radio. She currently hosts a show from 10am-2pm every weekday called ‘The Juliette Nunes Show’ and hosts a Canada-wide broadcast every Sunday called ‘The Weekender.’ And with a new city came new decisions for Juliette and Carson as they figured out where they wanted to live. “A major component for me was walkability,” explained Juliette. “I wanted to make sure that on a sunny afternoon, we could walk to a patio or enjoy a stroll in the park.” For Carson, it was important to live somewhere that was close to downtown and just a scooter ride away from 17th Avenue.
