Following the sad news of the passing of Her Majesty The Queen, The United Kingdom is now in a period of official mourning, which includes the closing of Windsor Great Park for all commercial activity. So, all polo is now cancelled for the remainder of this season. We thank you in advance for your support at this difficult time.

The Chairman and Board of Directors will meet in the coming weeks to discuss how best to pay tribute to such an outstanding Monarch who did so much for polo in general and Guards Polo Club in particular.

We send our deepest condolences to Their Majesties The King and Queen Consort, Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and Cambridge, and the wider Royal Family.

Les Lions/Great Oaks win the 60th edition of the Cartier Queen's Cup in extra time

Les Lions/Great Oaks this afternoon received one of the sport’s most important trophies, the Cartier Queen’s Cup. They beat Park Place on The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club in extra time. This tournament is considered one of the most prestigious and renowned events of the British sporting calendar and this year was celebrating its 60th anniversary. HM The Queen personally gifted the Cup to Guards Polo Club in 1960.
Although today’s final was a little unusual as it was played behind closed doors due to the coronavirus pandemic, Cartier proudly continues to sponsor this high-goal tournament. The Maison has been the honoured sponsor for the past eight years and a supporter of polo worldwide for more than 30 years. In addition, Laurent Feniou, Managing Director of Cartier UK, could not attend as he was self-isolating at home due to a recent overseas trip but sent a message to all the teams taking part today.
“It has been incredible to see such powerful games played by some of the very best polo players in the world, during this year’s Cartier Queen’s Cup Polo, despite the unprecedented turn of events this year. I am truly inspired by the resilience and talent of these wonderful players capturing the true essence and spirit of the sport.”
Ten world-class teams had entered this year’s tournament and have been playing over the past three weeks in a bid to reach today’s final. This afternoon, in a thrilling and competitive match Dillon Bacon’s Les Lions / Great Oaks defeated Andrey Borodin’s Park Place, adding their name to an illustrious cohort of teams for the first time. Les Lions were ahead in this game at half-time (4-3) but Park Place rallied in the second half to force the game into extra time. The 17-year-old Jeta Castagnola then fired through the winner for Les Lions / Great Oaks.
Dillon Bacon received the prestigious silver cup from Mr Brian Stein, the Chairman of Guards Polo Club. Dillon was also named the Cartier Most Valuable Player, while the stallion Challo Angelo, played by both Barto and Jeta Castagnola in this match, received the Cartier Best Playing Pony prize, a Cartier rug. Every member of the winning team received a Cartier Tank watch.
Earlier in the day Mr Stein presented Alessandro Bazzoni of the Monterosso Polo Team with the Cartier Trophy, which had been played for this morning. This was the first time in the history of the tournament that a Cartier Queen’s Cup match has been played between a husband and a wife. Alessandro Bazzoni was competing in this tournament for the fourth time while his wife Siri was making her Cartier Queen’s Cup debut with her MT Vikings team. This was a close game played over six chukkas with Monterosso just stealing a 6-5 win in the final chukka. Alessandro was rewarded with the Cartier Most Valuable Player prize in this Cartier Trophy match.

Lions/Great Oaks: Camilo (Jeta) Castagnola (7); Dillon Bacon (2); Bartolome Castagnola Jnr (8); Santiago Laborde (6). Park Place: Andrey Borodin (0); Will Harper (3); Gonzalo Pieres (9); Facundo Pieres (10). Park Place received 1 goal on handicap.
Monterosso Polo Team: Alessandro Bazzoni (1); Guillermo Terrera (7); Ignacio Toccalino (8); Jeronimo del Carril (6). MT Vikings: Siri Bazzoni (0); James Beim (7); Sebastian Merlos (8); Juan Martin Zubia (7).

Cartier Queen's Cup Day 13 Park Place Vaara v Les Lions/Great Oaks

Park Place Vaara 11 – 10 Les Lions/Great Oaks on The Castle Ground at Flemish Farm

Talk about save the best until last. Park Place Vaara had surprised us all in this tournament by failing to win a single game. Not today. Juan Britos and young team-mate Tommy Marin Moreno were transformed, scoring five and four goals respectively in this match. What is even more remarkable about this game is that neither team got on to the scoreboard until the third chukka. Unheard of in a high-goal game. Maybe Les Lions/Great Oaks, like us, were surprised by Park Place Vaara’s change of pace. Whatever the reason Les Lions/Great Oaks were trailing by one goal at half-time (7-6). A win for them today would have seen them battle in a three-way penalty shootout this evening with Thai Polo and Scone Polo so there was still all to play for. Barto Castagnola started to restore Les Lions/Great Oaks morale almost immediately into the sixth by firing through a penalty. We held our breath – was this the moment when fortunes changed? Park Place Vaara were now ahead by just one goal, 11-10 but scores can change rapidly at this level. However, despite some frantic play from both teams there were no further goals. Park Place Vaara may have won the day on the Castle Ground at Flemish Farm but still head to the subsidiary quarter-finals on Sunday where they will play Segavas. Meanwhile Les Lions/Great Oaks will find themselves in a re-run of last month’s Cowdray Park Gold Cup final when they face their nemesis Next Generation on Saturday afternoon.

Cartier Queen's Cup Day 11 - Monterosso vs Segavas

Monterosso 10 – 9 Segavas

The first golden goal scenario in this year’s tournament secured victory for Monterosso earlier today. They beat Segavas after a tight and thrilling game on The Queen’s Ground. Guillermo Terrera fired through the winning goal in the extra, seventh chukka to ensure Alessandro Bazzoni’s team have a place in next week’s quarter-finals. Their two wins, over Polo Stud Schockemohle and Segavas, see them finish third in League Two and secure a game this Saturday against the second-placed team in League One, which is still to be decided. Monterosso had a 3-1 lead at the end of the second only for Segavas to dominate the third chukka and bring the scores level (3-3) at the half-time break. Segavas pulled away in the fourth (6-5) only for Monterosso to level again in the fifth. This was clearly still anyone’s game and after such great polo from both sides it seemed a pity that someone would have to head home the loser. Another fast and furious chukka in the sixth was no more successful in deciding a winner and so with the scores reading 9-9 on the final bell, it time for extra time. Monterosso’s Terrera quickly found the flags in this seventh chukka ensuring their Cartier Queen’s Cup story continues.

Cartier Queen's Cup Day 11

Thai Polo (rec 1 goal) 12 – 10 MT Vikings at Flemish Farm

There was plenty of drama and a substantial number of goals in today’s only Cartier Queen’s Cup match, highlighting how important this game was to both teams. Thai Polo was looking for that all-important third win to give themselves a better chance of heading up League One and going directly to the semi-finals. Meanwhile MT Vikings wanted their second win of the tournament to keep their hopes alive in this year’s competition. The tension was evident from the first minute with penalties from both sides. With the scores at 5-3 to Thai Polo in the second, MT Vikings’ Sebastian Merlos was shown a red card and sent off. This meant that MT Vikings had to play the next two minutes with only three players on the field. Tommy Beresford, who has been the stand-out scorer for Thai Polo, made the most of this opportunity, not only successfully converting the penalty resulting from the red card but also scoring a field goal before the end of the second chukka. Ignacio Toccalino subbed in for Merlos from the third. Known to all as Cubi, he is currently playing for MT Vikings’ sister team, Monterosso, in this tournament and so would have been familiar with Merlos’s horses. This was evident as he fired through a fabulous goal from some distance almost as soon as he took to the field. With team-mate Juan Martin Zubia converting a penalty MT Vikings were now very much back in this game at half-time.
The Vikings attack continued in the fourth with James Beim reducing the gap further to just one goal (7-6). Then Ned Hine, who has impressed throughout this tournament, picked up a shot from Michel del Carril to restore Thai Polo’s two-goal difference. Beresford then ran the entire length of the field to slot through another. The tension was now evident from both sides but although there were plenty of whistles, the viewers on the livestream were treated to some fast and furious play in this chukka. With further goals from both teams the score was 10-8 going into the fifth. Zubia converted a 30-yard penalty and with Ned Hine scoring a field goal, Thai Polo still had their two-goal cushion going into the sixth chukka. Some great defensive play from MT Vikings meant that there was no score for much of this chukka. Then Hine managed to create some space around him and with only two minutes left fired through a goal for Thai Polo. Toccalino, who had been impressive in this game despite only joining half-way through, scored in the dying moments of this match but it was not enough to force extra time. Thai Polo are now not only the only team in League One to have registered three wins so far but they also went home today with the Richard Watt Cup, presented by the Watt family in memory of a former Chairman of Guards Polo Club.

Cartier Queen's Cup Day 10

Segavas 15 – 11 Polo Stud Schockemohle (rec 4 goals)

The excessive heat in the UK – temperatures hit 36 degrees Celsius late this afternoon – saw the only Cartier Queen’s Cup game of the day move to an earlier time of 11am. The heat though did not seem to affect Segavas – Luke Wiles, Mark Tomlinson, Joaquin Pittaluga and John Paul Clarkin. They powered past Polo Stud Schockemohle to win this game 15-11 and register their first win of the tournament. This team had impressed on their debut, going down by only a goal to Park Place and then registered just a two-goal deficit to the top seeded Next Generation. So it was only a matter of time before they struck victory. The 18-goal Polo Stud Schockemohle team, who are also looking for their first tournament win, kept Segavas in check in the first half, thanks to their four-goal handicap advantage. Pittaluga and Wiles were not deterred though and fired through 11 goals between them during these six chukkas. Add in Tomlinson’s three, plus one from Clarkin and Segavas were very much in the driving seat. They took the lead in the fourth and continued to dominate the remaining chukkas, which were played on The Queen’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. Segavas’s final match is a crucial contest against Monterosso Polo Team on Tuesday, with both teams searching for that all important second win to give them third place in League Two and a guaranteed quarter-final match.

Thai Polo (rec 1 goal) 13 – 8 Park Place Vaara at Flemish Farm

Thai Polo (rec 1 goal) delivered an impressive performance on the Castle Ground at Flemish Farm today to secure their second win of this tournament. They outclassed their higher handicapped opponents Park Place Vaara from the first whistle and kept their cool to win the game 13-8. They had previously impressed with their four-man polo and today it reaped results. They were 6-4 up at half-time and continued to power ahead in the second half. Park Place Vaara failed to score at all in the fourth, while Thai Polo had a commanding 11-5 lead going into the final, sixth chukka. It was at this moment that Park Place Vaara decided to get back into this game a little with Juan Britos and Hilario Ulloa showing their more usual flair, but it was too little, too late. Thai Polo’s confidence was at an all-time high and when Ned Hine produced an impressive run down the field to score Thai’s 13th goal there was no doubt which team was coming out best in this contest. Incredibly Park Place Vaara are still looking for their first win and they will need to retune somewhat if they are to win their final match, against the on-form Les Lions/Great Oaks next Wednesday.

Park Place 17 – 13 Polo Stud Schockemohle (rec 4 goals) on The Duke’s Ground
Park Place fared better this afternoon than their sister team, playing their third match of the tournament on The Duke’s Ground at Guards Polo Club. Yes on paper Park Place were the stronger team, Polo Stud Schockemohle received four goals on handicap, but Andrey Borodin’s team delivered a clinical performance on how to win a polo match. They were already 8-6 up after two chukkas and continued to fire through goals until the sixth when, not surprisingly they took their foot off the gas a little. They were 17-9 up on the scoreboard! In fact Facundo and Gonzalito Pieres made goal scoring look easy. With Will Harper showing great confidence too, executing several successful runs to goal and Andrey Borodin adding to his team’s tally, this was a masterclass in polo. Park Place looked almost invincible. Juan Gris Zavaleta and Patrick Maleitzke worked hard to keep Polo Stud Schockemohle in the game but they had few answers to Park Place’s brilliance this afternoon.

ADIAMENTO DO EVENTO BENEFICENTE SELL FOR LIFE

A direção.
