It’s also a fact that the industry has been suffering from production, distribution and exhibition channel’s lack of technological knowledge for both financial and creative sides. Business runs on Data. In our cinema industry, the main tool to measure the industry is a box office data that is not being collected correctly or in a timely manner. True business data is essential to monitor the indust
ry. Maintaining of a box office data collection process (BDC) is crucial for any industry to rate their success or failure and give room to rectify and take actions towards making successful cinemas. Thus, we, Cineplus have started our BDC process since 2014 and have completed a 56 weeks box office report, available for all. We want to work towards a new foundation of Bangladeshi Cinema Industry. A Box Office Data Collection Process (BDC) can open the door for following:
▶ Regulatory Fees: Bangladesh Government will be more interested about our industry when they see tax revenues. An authenticated box office data may assist govt. to secure a standpoint of their tax revenue. Once the tax revenue is increased, govt. will spend more to fix the industry problems.
▶ Infrastructure: We have no well-maintained database for our cinema industry to build our digital infrastructure. Recently our Government has passed a law that English words are strictly prohibited for naming convention of new cinema. English is more comfortable to communicate in the digital world. During the collection of box office report, one can standardize the digital identity of a content that can be tracked during its life cycle. A total digital infrastructure will develop.
▶ Duplication of Data: Currently, our Government is monitoring the industry with the help of several regulatory authorities like FDC, Censor Board etc. An inter-relational data link between them hardly exists. Same data has to be entered more than once during filing the necessary papers with these authorities. It opens the possibility of errors. With maintaining a database of related information and sharing decreases the chances of duplicate or invalid information of a cinema.
▶Publications: A publication has a direct communication with the reader. Box Office data can be a component for any cinema related publications.
▶ Software: Apps can be developed with information about the cinema; also it can be incorporated through the theater owners for seat booking or any other time sensitive ideas.
