I made a MUSICAL PUZZLE for you!

I'm a piano teacher here at Vincent Music, and one of my cool little students and I worked out how to write musical messages using Morse code! Basically, if you play a white note it counts as a dash, and a black note counts as a dot. So for example, if you play the note C, it counts as a single dash, which corresponds to the letter T, but if you play a C major chord (C E G), that counts as three dashes, which is the letter O; if you play a Bb chord (Bb D F), that's dot dash dash, which is the letter W. Get it?

I have written two little tunes in the key of Ab (which has 4 flats - Bb, Eb, Ab and Db). The first one just says HELLO.

Who can work out the SECRET MESSAGE in the second tune?

So Gymnopédie No. 1 left hand dynamics!Aim the single bass note to be louder than the following chord to get a better dynamic shape. It’s like you try to make the chord volume sit at the volume of the part way decay of the bass note fitting into “into” the bass sound. For example think of the bass note as (p) and chord cluster (pp) In actual reality it most likely be the end result because of things like higher pitch standing out and also that there’s 3 notes to just the one bass note but this deliberate intention practiced over time will take you there to get this part of the sound world right #4101

Don’t forget about focusing on other musical elements when you practise. Sometimes we are so caught up in correct pitch and rhythm we forget we could be mastering other elements along the way. Dynamics, articulation, technique, emotions and meaning. Strolling is a useful concept where you throw away rhythm for a moment and meander through a section for the sake of mastering a different element for example articulation. What do you think? Have you tried this?

It’s James the owner here. Just thought I’d do a rare plug of a gig I’m playing at tomorrow 4pm with an old friend When I’m not running a business and teaching piano it’s important for to me visit other parts of my life that mostly take a back seat yet for large chunks of my life were my primary focus. Scratch Djing and Hiphop were some of these things and I’m pleased to return again to this in some capacity. I was speaking about this today with a room hirer at our studio and quite grateful for this conversation we had. Don’t forget to revisit old passions and once dedications! These are also words I hear a lot from adult students returning to the piano after many years sometimes decades
