To lead, inspire and embrace positive change with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians in the Australian media sector

The MediaRING’s purpose is to develop, provide and enhance career opportunities for Indigenous Australians in the media. Our aim is to build understanding through sharing knowledge, advocacy, and promoting the diversity of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories

among our staff, our stakeholders and our audiences. The MediaRING was formed in 2008 and brings together many of Australia’s major media organisations. It is a volunteer association of industry and screen organisations. It is the first industry group of its kind in Australia. The group encompasses broadcasters, Government media agencies (both State and Federal), Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander organisations, trade associations and guilds, media buyers and newspaper/new media groups working together to create opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people working in the media. In essence the MediaRING is about harnessing the ample goodwill, knowledge and experience in the media industry and turning that into practical measures that can deliver real outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. The members achieve this through developing and enhancing career opportunities for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, sharing resources and providing leadership. In 2012 the MediaRING, in partnership with Screen Australia and the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations launched the first stage of a two year Indigenous Employment Strategy. The current priorities are:

• Employment and education

• Raising awareness and sharing knowledge

• Advocacy

Each MediaRING member organisation sets individual targets and timeframes which are relevant to their circumstances (employment, training, production of content, talent spotting, etc) reports their achievements in the context of how they are progressing in building overall Indigenous career pathways. MediaRING encourages members to promote activities and opportunities to their stakeholders as well as to advocate internally, within their organisations, to work towards reconciliation. We encourage you to participate, share and welcome others to join in on the journey.
