May is EDS Awareness Month! We interviewed Phillipa Pember to ask about her experiences with Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. One of the things mentioned in the episode was using mobility aids. Some people feel like they aren't in "enough pain" to use an aid. If you think you'd benefit from an aid it's worth trying!

Image Description
1. The outline of a head, in the skull there are love hearts around a cane to show the person is thinking about it . The person has a speech bubble coming out of their mouth. It says "I'm not in that much pain."
2. Cartoons of a walker, mobility scooter and crutches. In bold writing the text says "People who don't need mobility aids don't fantasise about using them."

In our podcast episode with Penny she talked about assistive technology for blind and visually impaired people. One way we can all help make the world more accessible is by including descriptions of the photos we post on social media. This post is a quick guide on how to do that.

ALT Text for images
1. A blue page with white writing. It includes the text above.
2. A blue page with five cirles in our brand colours. Each Circle contains a different phrase. The text says "Good Image Description includes." "Who is in the image", "The expression", "The colours", "The surrounding areas" and "Interesting features".
3. An example of what ALT text can look like. There is a picture of a family captioned with "A family of three. The son is on the Dads shoulders, while the Mum has her arms around Dads waist. Both parents look at their son. The son kisses dad’s forehead. The background is a cloudy sky."
4. Another example of what ALT text can look like. There is a picture of a corgi captioned "A smiling Corgi wearing a pink harness. It is walking next to a body of water in a park."
5. A blue page with white writing. The text says "Try adding image descriptions to your next post and tell us how it goes!"

Thank you so much Lacey Filipich for answering my call for a conversation partner for the episode of The Hidden World of Women .

I was waiting for inspiration for a topic that had some teeth and a couple of days ago I saw a post calling Iris Apfel a She-ro. Inspiration acquired.

Lacey was the perfect podcast guest to discuss terms like She-EO, Girl Boss, Mumpreneur and She-ro and ask whether they as accelerating women’s progress or could be derailing the progress.

As always the episode is available on all platforms where streaming is available (if you happen to find one I missed please let me know and I’ll sign up to that one too) but here is a link to our host platform

As we approach International Women's Day it's important to remember that the fight for equality has never been something we do alone. Millions of people have come together to make a difference.

In 1965, Merle Thornton and Rosalie Bognor went to see the minister to ask about repealing the drinking laws banning women from drinking in public bars. When he laughed them out of the room they took matters into their own hands. They chained themselves to the Regatta Hotel Bar and had to be removed by the police.
In 2024 the bar they protested at is now called Merle's Bar and while Merle is always willing to pay, they rarely charge her.
