Saturday Stunner

I have never been to Brazil but from what I have heard from Brazilian Salvationists and my wife, Simone, there are many similarities between it and Australia.

And I have discovered that Salvation Army Supplies Australia has given us another connection — The Shining Image of the Southern Cross by Commissioner Carl Eliasen.

If this history of The Salvation Army in Brazil is anything as exciting the stories Simone told me of TSA there in this era, after her visit there four or so years ago, then this will be an exciting and stunning read.

Worldwide Wednesday

When Colonels Kelvin and Cheralynne Pethybridge were leading the Eastern Europe Territory of The Salvation Army, due to the danger of war, they had to quickly pack up and send some of their possessions, including many books, back home to Australia.

Now in new appointments at our International Headquarters in London UK they have very kindly shared some book recommendations with Salvos Publishing.

Today Kelvin recommends Leadership Prayers by Richard Kriegbaum as one of the books that has impacted him.

From July 2024 Words of Life

Don’t burn out; keep yourselves fueled and aflame. Be alert servants of the Master, cheerfully expectant. Don’t quit in hard times; pray all the harder. Help needy Christians;
be inventive in hospitality. Romans 12:11-13 (MSG)

And in commenting on this Scripture I wrote: “If we are going to have the wisdom and energy to never give up and to keep ‘fueled and aflame’ we must rigorously return to God for renewing.”

I feel that most of us struggle with working hard for, and with, God and also taking time to recharge. It is in our ongoing growing relationship with Jesus that we have the solution.

I thoroughly recommend Words of Life, our Salvation Army international devotional book to all who want to know more of God and our relationship with him. Why Revival Tarries by Leonard Ravenhill

This book impacted me the most of any I can remember. Through it God confronted me about my own sin. I had to repent and this caused me to dig deep into my life and give everything to God.

I had been an officer for 8 years when this happened. In that appointment I used to often see sailing boats with white sails. Some were flying fast with plenty of wind in them and others were listless with no billowing sails.

Personally I saw myself without any wind in my sails, stuck and going no where. And then while reading this book It was like God winded me even more, but with a jolting punch in the stomach. I had to fiercely breathe in his forgiveness as I came face to face with my own sin.

A wonderful, confronting, life changing book.

When I was at our Salvation Army International Headquarters one of my roles was book publishing. It was a pleasure to be able to read many of the books already published by IHQ and that included these two books by Derek Elvin — Unsung Heroes and Heroes of Faith.

They are small books in page number but huge in story impact. Wonderful stories of humble, passionate Salvationists who have made a difference in many people’s lives.

My apologies friends if you have received some posts in the past couple of days that are now unavailable.

I have been trying to schedule some posts in advance but Facebook is not playing ball and it is only giving me the option to publish them immediately. So I am deleting them as soon as they go up.

I have sought help and hopefully can be back to normal soon.

As I work limited hours each week in this role I usually do a number of posts in advance and schedule them to be posted at 5am each morning.

A number of years ago, (we were Corps Officers at Parramatta) I came across a book by Kim Thomas titled Even God Rested… Why It’s Okay for Women to Slow Down.

Corps and family life was hectic. Our three children were 12, 16 and 20 so there was always something happening in every area of life.

The title of this book in itself, was a simple reminder that it’s okay to stop, take a breath and wait on God (and not feel guilty/stressed about it). Basically, the need to take a Sabbath Rest. God did it. Jesus did it. So why should we feel that we need to be superhuman and not do it.

This book emphasises that we (women) need to find a rhythm of rest – both physical and spiritual that restores us so we can be the best women God intended us to be.

Moving Monday Memory Moment

As I searched for a book to promote in today’s post the title of this book, Will You Choose Joy?, jumped out to me. Probably because I am attracted to joy. It’s inspiring and energising.

As I read the information about the book I was suddenly, surprised, deeply moved and caused to reflect on times of health struggles and loss concerning me and those closest to me.

Captain Normajean Horsberger’s joy in Jesus was deep, deliberate and delightful even though she was dealing with hugely intense health circumstances.

Her desire and ability to choose joy amidst all that she went through has challenged me at a time in my life when grief and health issues are at the forefront.

And I am choosing to continue to joyfully serve Jesus.

Thanks so much to Colonel Kelvin Pethybridge for his book recommendation today. Kelvin and Cheralynne a little while ago moved from their appointments in Eastern Europe to International Headquarters of The Salvation Army in London.

Kelvin is the Chief Secretary at IHQ and Cheralynne is the Secretary for Leader Development also at IHQ.

I am so glad that Kelvin has recommended Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire by Jim Cymbala and Dean Merrill. This book on prayer has had a powerful impact on him.

Brooklyn Tabernacle, this book and Jim and Carol Cymbala have had an important part to play in Simone and my spiritual growth. In 2000 we attended a Brooklyn Tabernacle Conference in Chicago, met the Cymbalas, many of their team and were greatly encouraged through the conference. We were the only Salvationists and Aussies in the 600 strong conference. Bought the church’s, then latest CD, God’s Still Working and loved it too.

We then went to New York and attended one of the Sunday Services. They had saved us seats right in the very front row!
Just 2 or 3,000 people there. The whole church is built on and operates with prayer as the key building block in their connection with God.

I had read a number of Jim’s books prior to all this and I thoroughly endorse Kelvin’s recommendation of Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire.
