GRAND SLAM AND THEN HANG ON FOR FLAG

By Robert Laidlaw

STURT SECURED THE 2023 division one baseball premiership with an exciting 8-7 victory over Henley & Grange at West Lakes in game two on Sunday, after winning Saturday’s opener 4-1 in the grand final series.
Leading 8-0 after the game’s first two innings, it looked like the Saints by how much, but Henley fought tooth and nail to the end to fall short by just one run.
Batting first Sturt came out of the blocks with three runs, after Harry Knuckey and Mitch Lightbody hit singles, Jordan McArdle walked, Terrell Joyce had a RBI single, with a double play scoring the second run and Dayton Mitchell collecting a RBI hit.
Then in the second inning, three walks and Knuckey’s double saw one run in and loaded bases, with Jackson Brebner-Russ stepping to the plate and delivering a grand slam home run, to make it 8-0.
A shell-shocked Rams changed pitchers at the start of the third frame, with Landon Hernadez going the rest of the way and restricting Sturt’s scoring opportunities, conceding one hit (in the ninth frame) for nine strikeouts in seven innings.
Henley gave supporters a glimmer of hope with a three-run fourth dig. Liam Bull doubled, Patrick Inglis walked, Jet Clohessy had a RBI single and Jack Partington belted a two-run two-bagger, to make it 8-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, Inglis put one over the fence with a man on, to close the gap to 8-5, as dreams of an unlikely fightback seemed to be coming a reality.
Then, almost on cue, Hernandez, who had kept the Rams in the game with his pitching, delivered a powerful two-run dinger in the bottom of the eighth dig to see Henley within one run at 8-7, but the ninth and final frame amounted to nothing, leaving Sturt as premiers.
With a huge home run in game one, his grand slam in the deciding contest and four innings of work from the mound, Brebner-Russ took out the series MVP.
It was the Saints third flag in six seasons, while Henley’s premiership drought dating back to 1997 continues.

🥎EAGLES BACK TO BACK CHAMPIONS

By Robert Laidlaw

WEST TORRENS WON THE 2024 Premier League Softball grand final 7-0 over Port Adelaide to claim back-to-back titles at West Beach Parks on Saturday night.
It was a tense game up to the bottom of the fifth frame, when the Eagles rallied to score six runs and end the contest under the seven-run mercy rule.
Earlier it was a battle of the pitchers, with Steph Trzcinski dominating for West Torrens and Liz Engler holding her own for the Magpies.
The Eagles scored a run in the opening frame after hits to Lana Kaesler and Emma Burridge, and an error.
With Trzcinski in control from the circle, that run looked like holding up the rest of the way – she conceded just one hit in five innings for 10 strikeouts.
Then the explosive bottom of the fifth, which saw the Eagles bat around to end the game early.
After the first batter was retired, Amber Hood doubled, Kaesler walked, Dani Bacskai and Burridge hit RBI two-baggers, Trzcinski had a two-run single, Sophie Hoyle walked, and Brodie Borovnik and Alicia Martschink had RBI hits.
Trzcinski was named MVP of the grand final.

STURT ON TOP

By Robert Laidlaw

BEHIND A SENSATIONAL PITCHING PERFORMANCE by Ky Hampton, Sturt has taken a one game lead in the best of three division one baseball grand final series against Henley & Grange at West Lakes, with a 4-1 victory.
Hampton threw eight innings for four hits and 13 strikeouts, as he limited the Rams scoring opportunities, as he only walked one batter.
The Saints took an early lead with a run at the top of the second inning, when Terrell Joyce and Jackson Brebner-Russ hit doubles with one out, but Henley pitcher Jordan Grose struck out the next two batters to keep the damage to a minimum.
At the top of the fourth Sturt mounted a challenge with two hits but could not break through, while in the bottom of the fourth, Landon Hernandez died up the ballgame with a long home run over the centrefield fence for the Rams.
It seemed the Sturt batting machine was primed to attack and collected three hits in the fifth frame but a double play on a lone drive to second base robbed it of taking the lead.
Then at the top of the sixth the Saints cashed in. Mitch Lightbody belted a double with Jordan McArdle smashing the first pitch over the fence for two runs. And after the first out, Brebner-Russ followed suit and crashed a dinger – 4-1 Sturt.
Game two is at West Lakes from midday today (Sunday), followed by a deciding game three if needed at 3pm.

🥎MAGPIES EARN ANOTHER CRACK

By Robert Laidlaw

MINOR PREMIER PORT ADELAIDE has recovered from its semi-final loss against West Torrens to earn the second Premier League Softball grand final spot, with an 8-1 victory over Glenelg in Wednesday’s preliminary final at West Beach Parks.
Rebels took the early lead, when at the top of the first inning, Sydney Horton singled and Sasha Penglase had a RBI grounder to second base.
In the bottom of the opening frame, it looked like the Magpies were headed for a big rally but got cut down on the bases and only scored one run to level the scores.
Jess Goldyn hit up the middle but was thrown out attempting to extend her single into a double. Jess Neves singled but was out at home on Briana Marcelino’s triple, with Jess Maslin hitting a RBI single to at least salvage something from the ‘wreckage’.
After a scoreless second dig and top of the third, Port wrested the lead with a three-run rally.
An error was followed by Marcelino’s RBI double, Maslin’s single, Charlize Callaghan’s safe bunt, Montana Edwards’ RBI walk and McKenna Smith’s sac fly, for a 4-1 advantage.
The Magpies scored twice in the fourth inning after triples to Liz Engler and Goldyn, and looked safe at 6-1.
But Glenelg wasted a perfect opportunity to get back into the game at the top of the fifth, when Horton tripled but was cut down at the plate going for a home run.
It proved costly after singles to Georgia Bevan and Courtney Shepherd, and an intentional walk to Johanna Grauer loaded the bases, but Rebels could not score.
With two runs at the bottom of the fifth, after hits to Smith, Zoe Thomson and Neves, the seven-run mercy rule enacted and the Magpies were through to the grand final, to be played at West Beach Parks from 8pm on Saturday against West Torrens.
Engler pitched the complete game for the win, conceding five hits in five innings for four strikeouts.

🥎- EAGLES THROUGH TO GRAND FINAL
By Robert Laidlaw

WITH AN IRRESISTIBLE START, West Torrens has qualified for the 2024 Premier League Softball grand final, with a comprehensive 11-3 victory over minor premier Port Adelaide in the second semi-final at West Beach Parks on Saturday.
A seven-run opening inning at the top of the first laid the foundation in the Eagles’ rock-solid start.
Jordan Harris reached on an error to lead off the game. Then Amber Hood singled, Lana Kaesler hit a two-run double, Dani Bacskai was hit by a pitch, Emma Burridge had a RBI single, Sophie Hoyle walked, Steph Trzcinski had a two-run hit, Alicia Martschink reached on an error and Harris had a RBI single.
In reply the Magpies mounted a charge but only managed two runs in the bottom of the first. Jess Goldyn laid down a safe bunt and stole second base, Jess Maslin hit a RBI double and Charlize Callaghan had a RBI single.
But it was almost lights out the rest of the way, with Port managing just one more run, in the fifth and final frame, on two errors.
If the Eagles start wasn’t enough, they scored another four runs in the fourth dig, on RBI hits to Trzcinski and Martschink, and a Harris two-run single.
Trzcinski went the distance from the circle for the win, conceding six hits for five strikeouts in five innings.
For the Magpies, Callahan batted 1000 with three hits from three trips to the plate.
Port will now take on Glenelg in Wednesday night’s preliminary final at West Beach Parks for a chance to qualify for the premiership-decider.

IT TOOK EXTRA INNINGS but Glenelg has shocked the softball world with a 4-3 victory over Sturt, which only missed second spot on percentage, in the first semi knock-out final.
The first two frames were tight, with neither side scoring, then Rebels managed a pair of runs at the top of the third, after Sydney Horton and Courtney Shepherd hit singles, Johanna Grauer was intentionally walked, Sasha Penglase had a RBI hit and Sophie Kinnear forced in another run when she walked.
But the Falcons came storming back with three runs in the bottom of the third to grab a 3-2 lead – Abby Kennedy walked, Rachel Tonkin singled, Bel White had a two-run hit and Maddie Cameron belted a RBI double.
Neither side could break through again, until at the death knell, Glenelg managed to tie up the ballgame with a run at the top of the seventh and final inning, when Grauer walked, Penglase singled and although thrown out 9-3, Tayte Nicholson batted a run in.
After Sturt failed to answer in the bottom of the seventh, the game went into extra innings, with neither side able to score in the eighth frame.
Then at the top of the ninth, Shepherd was placed on second base and Grauer was intentionally walked. Penglase flied out to centrefield for the first out, then Sophie Kinnear reached on an error, which saw Shepherd cross home plate to put Rebels 4-3 up.
Sturt still had a chance to draw level or win in the bottom of the ninth, but was retired three-up and three-down, the final two by strikeouts.
Glenelg pitcher Grauer came into the circle with one runner on and none out in the third frame, and gave up three hits and a couple of runs before settling down. She conceded six hits for eight strikeouts in seven innings for the win.
Now Rebels has a chance to qualify for the grand final, when it plays Port Adelaide at West Beach Parks on Wednesday night.

STURT EDGE ADELAIDE IN GAME ONE

By Robert Laidlaw

IT WAS TIGHT BUT Sturt triumphed 5-3 against Adelaide in game one of the division one baseball preliminary final best-of-three series at Mitcham on Saturday.
The Angels got the jump with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Max Tracey singled, stole second base and scored on Stefan Welch’s double. Then two bunt hits, to Billy Damon, Henry Cann, saw Welch score.
In the bottom of the first, Harry Knuckey walked for Sturt and came home on Jordan McArdle’s double to make it 2-1.
Then in the bottom of the third the Saints took the lead on Dayton Mitchell’s two-run home run after an error.
Hits by Jonas Garcia, Knuckey and McArdle, and Jackson Brebner-Russ’ sac fly saw another two Sturt runs in the bottom of the third, and a 5-2 lead.
A Billy Damon home run at the top of the eighth dig gave Adelaide its final run of the game.
Ky Hampton pitched eight innings for the win, conceding 10 hits for 13 strikeouts.
Game two is at Mitcham on Sunday from noon, with game three, if needed, at 3pm.

ALTHOUGH OUT-HIT, HENLEY & GRANGE managed to hold on for a 6-3 victory over Woodville at West Lakes in Saturday’s game one of the best of three series at West Beach.
The Senators sent shock waves through the Rams’ home crowd when lead-off batter Wade Moore hit a home run to start proceedings.
But Henley worked to the lead in the second frame, with two runs, thanks to three walks and two hit by pitches.
Then in the bottom of the third, Liam Bull doubled and came home on Patrick Inglis’s sac fly to make it 3-1.
It looked like the Rams were going away, when they scored another pair of runs in the fourth dig, after Jet Clohessy doubled, two walks and Bull’s two-run single, for a 5-1 lead.
Woodville closed the gap at the top of the eighth, when Moore was hit by a pitch and Cesar Perez smashed a two-run dinger, but Henley managed the final run in the bottom of the eighth, when Jack Partington walked, stoles second base and scored on a wild throw.
Jordy Grose pitched 7.1 innings for the win, conceding seven hits for three strikeouts.
The Rams outfield was on fire, with Giovanni Garbella taking four catches in left, Partington took three in centre and Inglis added another four in right.
Game two is at West Lakes on Sunday from noon, with game three, if needed, at 3pm.

🥎- EAGLES SQUEEZE INTO SECOND

By Robert Laidlaw

IN AN UNBELIEVABLE END to the Premier League Softball season, West Torrens and Sturt finished level pe***ng after wins on Wednesday night, with both having conceded 55 runs through the minor round.
The other deciding aspect to determine second spot came down to the head-to-head battles between the Eagles and Sturt, with West Torrens winning three of the four games, and conceding seven less runs.
Before the final round, the Falcons held the edge with four less runs scored against, but with a 7-6 victory over Port Adelaide, needed the Eagles to conceded at least three runs against Walkerville, with West Torrens winning 16-2.

STURT HAD AN EXCITING victory over the Magpies with a walk-off win, in the bottom of the fifth inning, after the scores were locked at 6-6, when Sarah Tonkin singled and eventually came home on an error.
It was a tense game throughout, with both sides scoring four times in the third inning.
At the top of the second frame, Port broke through for the first run, when Montana Edwards had a RBI single after an error.
Then it looked like the Magpies by how far, when they scored four runs at the top of the third dig, helped by three errors and another Edwards’ RBI single.
But the Falcons answered back straight away with four runs, after bunt hits to Abby Kennedy, Rachel Tonkin and Bel White loaded the bases, for Maddie Cameron and Riley Moore to have two-run hits.
Port made it 6-4 at the top of the fourth, when Jess Goldyn singled and Briana Marcelino had a RBI triple.
In the bottom of the fourth Sturt levelled the scores with a pair of runs, after Sarah Tonkin singled and two errors, which led to the Falcons scoring the winning run in the last inning.

AN EIGHT-RUN FINAL INNING blew out the scoreline against Walkerville, as West Torrens won easily, 16-2, with the main focus on restricting the Cats’ scoring.
The Eagles scored three times in the first inning, after Jordan Harris doubled, Lana Kaesler had a RBI single and a pair of errors.
But Walkerville looked like making a game of it when it scored twice in the bottom of the second frame, after hits to Georgia Mason, Steph Gall and Hayley Mayer, to close the margin to 3-2.
A five-run third dig, highlighted by Kaesler’s RBI double and Emma Burridge’s two-run home run, saw the Eagles go 8-2 up.
Then the eight-run fourth and final inning, which included Kaesler’s two-run triple and RBI hits to Dani Bacskai, Steph Trzcinski and Amber Hood.
West Torrens made sure the Cats would not score again in the bottom of the fourth and final frame, when it brought Trzcinski into pitch, as she retired Walkerville three-up and three-down, with two strikeouts.
Kaesler had a big game with the bat, with four hits from four trips to the plate, four RBIs and scored two runs.

RESULTS:

GRAND SLAMS DECIDE GAMES

By Robert Laidlaw
NOT ONE BUT TWO GRAND SLAM HOME RUNS proved the difference in two of Sunday’s three division one baseball semi-final match-ups, with Adelaide and Sturt riding the big hits to wins over Woodville and West Torrens.
And then there were four, as the Eagles and Port Adelaide have been knocked out of the play-offs, with the Senators surviving for a preliminary final match-up with top team Henley & Grange at West Lakes next weekend.
The other preliminary final will be at Mitcham, where Sturt hosts Adelaide, with both best of three series.

TY FORNEY WAS ADELAIDE’S hero in the Angels 5-1 game two victory over Woodville on Sunday at Findon, with a grand slam home run at the top of the seventh and final inning.
Adelaide took the early lead with a run at the top of the opening frame, when Max Tracey singled, Forney walked and Billy Damon had a RBI hit.
That 1-0 lead held up until the bottom of the fifth, when the Senators squared the ledger with their first run to make it 1-1, after Nick Kuhn singled, Greg Bravo was hit by a pitch and an error.
With the game still tied 1-1 going into the top of the seventh, and the two-hour limit because of the extreme heat looming, the Angels took advantage of the opportunities presented.
After Woodville pitcher Drew Janssen struck out the first two batters of the frame, Chris Congdon walked and Lachlan Pace reached on an error. Then Tracey ran out an infield single and the bases were loaded, setting the stage for Forney’s heroics.
Still the Senators had one more chance in the bottom of the seventh but could not muster a rally and lost the series in two games.
Henry Cann went the distance on the mound for the win, conceding two hits in seven digs for four strikeouts, while Janssen gave up five hits in 6.2 innings for 11 K2s.

ALTHOUGH WINNING 10-4 AGAINST West Torrens on Sunday at Mitcham to win the series in two games, Sturt can thank a six-run second inning, which set up the victory, with Terrell Joyce smashing a grand slam home run to set up the Saints.
The Eagles got on the board early with a run at the top of the opening frame, on Mason Clavell’s RBI single, but Sturt took the lead in the bottom half of the dig, when Mitch Lightbody walked and Jordan McArdle ‘put one out’, for a 2-1 advantage.
Then the big rally in the second frame, where Zach Altamura, Matt McBeth, Jonas Garcia, Harry Knuckey and Lightbody collected hits before Joyce’s heroics, to go 8-1 up.
West Torrens managed to pull two runs back in the third inning, when Clavell smashed a two-run dinger after Sam McGarry had singled.
And when Sam McGarry hit a sac fly at the top of the fourth dig, the Eagles closed the gap to 8-4, but Sturt pulled away with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth and final dig, when Garcia doubled and Knuckey belted a two-run home run.
Jackson Brebner-Russ pitched 3.2 innings for the win, conceding eight hits for a pair of strikeouts.

AFTER A STIRRING 6-5 WALK-OFF victory over a gallant Port Adelaide on Saturday, Henley & Grange was able to close out the series at West Lakes on Sunday, with a 6-0 win in game two.
In the bottom of the opening frame Jack Partington, Landon Hernandez and Liam Bull collected hits for a 1-0 lead.
Then in the second dig, Jet Clohessy doubled and Partington had a RBI single, while in the fourth, Koki Yonezawa smashed a home run to make it 3-0.
Yonezawa came to the fore again in the fifth frame with a two-run double, after hits to Giovanni Garbella and Patrick Inglis, while in the sixth, Partington picked up his fourth hit of the game, and ‘ran wild’ around the bases to set up a Wilson Lee sacrifice fly, to make it 6-0.
Landon Hernandez went the distance, conceding four hits in six frames for nine strikeouts.

RAMS WALK IT OFF

By Robert Laidlaw

ON DAY ONE OF the division one baseball semi-finals, Jack Partington hit a two-run single in the bottom of the seventh and final inning to help Henley & Grange beat Port Adelaide 6-5 at West Lakes.
With temperatures reaching 40c on Saturday, all division one games were commenced at 11am and only went seven innings or two hours.
The Magpies came out firing with two runs at the top of the first frame, when Flynn McKee doubled, Sammy Steigert walked and Ethan Murphy hit a two-run, two-bagger on a high ball that could not be handled by the Henley defence.
Two long balls by the Rams changed the momentum of the game. First a solo shot in the bottom of the second by Liam Bull, then in the third dig, Landon Hernandez smashed a three-run dinger after Jet Clohessy and Partington had walked, for a 4-2 lead.
Murphy hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth to close the gap, then in the seventh, Brodie Arriola and Murphy again, hit homers, to see Port grab a 5-4 lead.
But Henley was good enough to come back and win in the bottom of the seventh. Patrick Inglis singled, Koki Yonezawa bunted him to second base, and after Adam Rowe also singled, the Magpies made a pitching change, bringing in Sammy Steigert.
Steigert hit the next batsman, Clohessy, which set up Partington’s heroics.
Jordy Grose pitched six innings for nine hits and two strikeouts, with Wilson Lee collecting the win after coming on to the mound at the top of the seventh.
For Port, Tyson McKee started and threw 6.1 innings for six hits and nine K2s in a solid outing.

IN A GAME WHERE HITS were few and far between, Adelaide scored five runs on two hits in the sixth inning to break open a 2-2 ballgame at Findon, and set up its 7-2 victory over Woodville.
The Angels had a great start with a pair of runs at the top of the opening frame but it was a gift, as Woodville made three errors.
Although not collecting a hit until the sixth dig, the Senators managed a run in the bottom of the first, after Wade Moore walked, a wild pitch put him at second base, Cesar Perez’s groundout put him at third, and Drew Janssen hit a sac fly.
Then in the bottom of the fourth, Perez walked, Mitch Fienemann was hit by a pitch, then an error saw one run in and another possibility, when Fienemann came charging home, but he was tagged out, to leave the game tied at 2-2.
With one out at the top of the sixth dig, Chis Congdon walked, Lachlan Pace had a sac bunt, and Max Tracey walked, which saw a pitching change, with Ty Forney also walking to load the bases – with two out.
Up stepped Stefan Welch and calmly hit a two-run single to put the Angels ahead. Then after Billy Damon walked, Henry Cann hit a three-run single to blow the margin out to five runs, at 7-2, which Woodville could not answer.
Damon went the distance, conceding two hits for eight strikeouts in seven innings – he took a no-hitter in to the sixth frame, with two out. For the Senators, starting pitcher AJ Verastegui went 5.2 digs for two hits and six K2s.
Game two and if needed game three is at Findon on Sunday.

WITH A BIG FOUR-RUN fifth inning, Sturt was able to beat West Torrens 8-4 at Mitcham.
The Eagles went to an early lead with single runs in the first two innings, on Tom McGarry’s home run and James McFarlane’s RBI single.
Sturt tied the ballgame in the bottom of the second, on Zach Altamura’s two-run dinger, after Dayton Mitchell had walked.
At the top of the third dig, West Torrens regained the lead when Tom McGarry doubled and came home on Mason Clavell’s two-bagger, for the Eagles to go 3-2 up.
But again, the Saints fought back, this time going 4-3 ahead, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third, after hits to Jonas Garcia, Harry Knuckey, Jordan McArdle and Terrell Joyce.
Then the bottom of the fourth inning saw Sturt pull away, with Blake Farr smashing a two-run dinger and McArdle hitting a two-run double.
Hits to the McGarry brothers, Tom and Sam, combined with an error, saw the last run of the game, to the Eagles at the top of the fifth.
