Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) traffic section in Nyanga has been rocked with allegations of corruption as they are being accused of using their personal vehicles to man roadblocks and pocketing money from motorists.

A motorist Adam Madzitire
who stays in Nyamhuka township raised alarm over the Nyanga traffic section shenanigans.

He said they are pocketing more than $400 from road blocks and failure to pay your vehicle or bike will be impounded.

"Z.R.P. Nyanga Traffic section has turned traffic enforcement road blocks into personal cash collection points, the points include Magamba turn off, Davchards turn off, Troutbeck turn off and Nyamhuka and in Nyamaropa they operate at Tangwena Turn Off, Regina, and Satuku bus stop.

"The officers operate under the command of the District Traffic officer Chief Inspector Tandare known as Mbuya deputised by Soka. In most cases they park their vehicles at their collection points and the combi, mishika shika and motor bike drivers go and pay their daily fees for road access. The amount paid per day is US$5.00, failure to pay your vehicle will be impounded.

"They mainly use their personal vehicles AD van belonging to Major, blue old model Toyota which belongs to Mbuya and Toyota Mark II which belongs to one known as Ngara. The Government has with immediate effect banned mining along the Mutare river and other rivers around the country.

In a post- cabinet briefing on Tuesday , governmemt ordered cessation of all mining activities along Mutare river, Nyagadzi in Chendambuya, Mazowe, Munyati, Insiza, Save and Angwa among others.

Government also said mining and desiltation activities in riverbeds is not giving the country any tangible benefits, instead it is increasing environmental degradation.

The cabinet also stated that pollution, siltation, and degradation were worsening rather than improving.

The Minister of Information, Hon. Jenfan Muswere, said the commencement of large-scale and mechanical alluvial mining has led to significant destruction of rivers and disruption of riverine ecosystems, hence the cabinet has moved to impose an immediate ban on riverbed mining.

“Cabinet considered and approved th report on Alluvial Mining and Rehabilitation of Degraded Rivers, which was presented by the Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Honourable Dr. Anxious Masuka, as Chairperson of the Inter-Ministerial Committee on Mining and Environment.

"Cabinet noted that since its commencement in 2011 across the country’s rural provinces, large-scale and mechanical alluvial mining, or riverbed mining, has resulted in water pollution, siltation, degradation of river channels, and disruption of riverine ecosystems. Cabinet directed that riverbed mining be banned with immediate effect,” Muswere said.

The latest edition of the World Health Statistics released today by the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that the COVID-19 pandemic reversed the trend of steady gain in life expectancy at birth and healthy life expectancy at birth (HALE).

The pandemic wiped out nearly a decade of progress in improving life expectancy within just two years. Between 2019 and 2021, global life expectancy dropped by 1.8 years to 71.4 years (back to the level of 2012). Similarly, global healthy life expectancy dropped by 1.5 years to 61.9 years in 2021 (back to the level of 2012).

The 2024 report also highlights how the effects have been felt unequally across the world. The WHO regions for the Americas and South-East Asia were hit hardest, with life expectancy dropping by approximately 3 years and healthy life expectancy by 2.5 years between 2019 and 2021. In contrast, the Western Pacific Region was minimally affected during the first two years of the pandemic, with losses of less than 0.1 years in life expectancy and 0.2 years in healthy life expectancy.

“There continues to be major progress in global health, with billions of people who are enjoying better health, better access to services, and better protection from health emergencies,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, WHO Director-General. “But we must remember how fragile progress can be. In just two years, the COVID-19 pandemic erased a decade of gains in life expectancy. That's why the new Pandemic Agreement is so important: not only to strengthen global health security, but to protect long-term investments ......

*Teachers training Colleges urged to enrol more Students in STEM subjects*

https://chat.whatsapp.com/JxH5Y7qgs9L8MxW5NPzoKb

By Fanuel Chinowaita

The Deputy Minister of Primary Education and Secondary Honourable Angeline Gata has urged the teacher's training colleges to enroll more STEM subjects students for there is a shortage of these teachers during Wednesday's question and answer session in Parliament, The Wasu Post has learnt.

The Deputy Minister said this after Chikanga Constituency Honourable Lynette Karenyi questioned the Ministry of Education on criteria used to deploy teachers on the waiting list after completing their courses.

"Why there are reports of shortages of teachers in schools considering that there are many trained teachers in the country and what criteria is used when deploying teachers considering that those who have been on waiting lists for a long time have not been employed while those who recently graduated have been engaged.

"I would like also to find out from the Minister what is the policy to ensure that people who are conducting the registration process are not going to use political party lines? What we know is that although the law says the village heads are supposed to be apolitical, but they are now political. I know that people who may be linked to the party I belong to will not be registered. What is the policy regarding ensuring that the registration is not politicized?", asked Karenyi.

Answering to Karenyi's question, the Deputy Minister said the number of teachers recruited is determined by the Ministry of Public Service, labour and social welfare.

She also revealed that 2000 teachers have been employed recently and teachers of subjects such as Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology are still in shortage.

"The number of teachers recruited is determined by the Ministry of Public Service, labour and social welfare through fiscal space of the public service commission.

The Ministry continues to advocate for increased te
