Statement from The Gaming Hub ZW on the DRC Conflict Minerals Crisis

As gamers, we often enjoy the thrill of competition and the camaraderie of shared experiences. However, it is important to remember that the technology we use to connect with others comes at a cost. The minerals used to make our gaming devices, such as coltan and tantalum, are often sourced from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), where violence and conflict have plagued the region for decades.

The ongoing conflict in the DRC has been linked to the genocide, displacement, child labour, and sexual abuse of millions of people. The region's resources have been exploited by armed groups to fund their operations, perpetuating a cycle of violence and suffering.

As Africans who are gamers, we cannot ignore the horrors happening to millions in the DRC. We must acknowledge the role that our consumption of technology plays in fueling this conflict. We must also call out big-tech companies for not doing enough to ensure that the minerals powering their products are conflict-free.

We urge the African Union to coordinate and harmonize efforts to stabilize the DRC. We encourage social justice activists to not ignore the plight of the affected millions of people in the DRC.

We also call on Zimbabwean gamers and associations to join us in raising awareness of the conflict in the DRC. Let us work together to demand accountability from the companies that profit from the suffering of others.

Together, we can make a difference.

Is gaming becoming the new civic space for protest?

Roblox users who are unable to physically protest Israel's occupation of Palestine have turned to the virtual streets of the game for an outlet for their opinions. The platform "(PALESTINE) Dataran tanjung mas" (written in Malay) is a user-created experience that has given young gamers an online venue to engage in activism. As stated in the description, "This map is made for Palestine solidarity." TikTok user cikguzyd, a gamer from Malaysia with almost 200,000 followers, appears to be the creator of the experience. In the game, cikguzyd, who is chanting in Arabic, leads a big throng of gamers raising Palestinian flags in prayer and protest. Videos of this gathering have been uploaded to X and TikTok although mainstream news/media is yet to report on this.

Roblox has drawn criticism over the years for appealing to a very youthful user population.

Will the user-made pro-Palestine virtual demonstration herald the banning of Roblox in nations that support the Israeli government, given the growing rhetoric stating that supporting and standing with the Palestinian people amounts to endorsing terrorism? We shall see.

Nevertheless, new spaces for activism are emerging and clearly gaming is one of them.
