Mpofu vows to defend Chibuku Super Cup
Highlanders Football Club technical manager Mandla Mpofu has thrown down the gauntlet and challenged his players to produce results that will ensure progress into the next stage of the Chibuku Super Cup competition that gets underway this weekend.
Bosso won the last edition of the tournament in 2019 with Mpofu then an assistant to Dutch coach Hendrikus Pieter de Jong and on Thursday he told journalists that retaining the trophy was top priority.
He said: “We have to defend this cup and everyone is looking at us. Looking at the group that we are in, four derbies, six games, it’s going to be tough but I will demand results from the boys. There is no two ways, we need to progress. I will really demand and make sure that we progress and get to the next stage. With the limited resources that we have, we need to have character and push until we progress.”
Highlanders are in the same cluster with fellow Bulawayo sides Chicken Inn, Bulawayo Chiefs, and Bulawayo City.
They begin their defence of the Chibuku Super Cup with a tricky outing against giant killers Bulawayo Chiefs on Sunday at Barbourfields.
Mpofu’s show of bravado contradicts the challenges he is facing considering that six of Bosso’s new signings will not be available for selection until July as they do not have reverse international clearances.
2019 Soccer Star of the Year Joel Ngodzo, Winston Mhango, Keith Mavhunga, Peter Muduhwa, Rodi Sibanda and Lynoth Chikuhwa will only be able to feature for Bosso when the next transfer window opens in July.
Prior to joining Highlanders, Ngodzo, Mhango and Mavhunga were based in Zambia. Muduhwa was in Tanzania while Sibanda and Chikuhwa were playing in South Africa and Botswana respectively.
This development leaves Mpofu with 17 outfield players to select his best men since Bosso have registered 23 infield players and three goalkeepers.
The situation has further been worsened by injuries picked up at training by former Bantu Rovers and Bulawayo City utility player Chrispen Ncube and linkmen Nqobizitha Masuku and Divine Mhindirira.
Mpofu is however, optimistic that the trio will have recovered by Sunday.
“Nqo, Chrispen and Divine picked up some slight injuries but I think they can be managed and come Sunday they will be available for selection,” he said.
The 2021 edition of the Chibuku Super Cup is being played in a mini – league format with teams grouped into four clusters and the group winners will proceed to the semi – finals of the competition.
Group 1, which uses the National Sports Stadium, comprises Caps United, Yadah, Harare City, ZPC Kariba, Herentals and Dynamos. Group 2 is based at Barbourfields and has Bulawayo City, Chicken Inn, Bulawayo Chiefs and Highlanders. In Group 3 there is Tenax, Black Rhinos, Cranborne Bullets, and Manica Diamonds, with Sakubva being their base. Finally, Mandava based Group 4 consists of Ngezi Platinum Stars, Triangle, FC Platinum and Whawha.
