●UNEMPLOYMENT, DRUGS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE FUELS GBV.
UNEMPLOYMENT, DRUGS AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE FUELS GBV.
Gender-based violence is an international calamity. It is one of the most prevalent human rights violations in the world and it knows no social, economic or national boundaries.
Worldwide, an estimated one in three women will experience physical or sexual abuse in her lifetime. DRUGS and INSPIRE WOMEN AND MEN organizations invests to prevent violence against women and girls.ln every country and culture, more action is needed to ensure women in all their diversity live free of violence .
Both men and women can be victims or perpetrators of gender-based violence. However, statistics show that the majority of all gender-based violence against women and girls is perpetrated by men.
Gender inequality, and the norms and beliefs that violence against women and girls is acceptable, cause gender-based violence. There are also many factors that increase the risk of GBV, with women and girls living through crises experiencing an increase in both the frequency and severity of GBV.
Cultural beliefs and societal expectations also fuel GBV,in some communities it is believed that "if a man does not beat you he doesn't love you",hence women and girls are subjected to domestic violence due to these societal expectations. Some cultures also highlight that divorce is a taboo therefore women are prohibited to leave their abusive partners due to societal expectations and cultural beliefs.
The high levels of unemployed women is a contributor to gender-based violence as most women depend on their husbands hence this gives men the authority to abuse them as they know that there is nowhere they can go to as the man is the bread winner of the family
On the other hand unemployed men who can't provide for their families vent their anger on women and children.
Gift Mthelethwa from lnspire Women and Men organization said employment or entrepreneurship can
