●DOMESTIC WORKERS SUFFER INTOLERABLE MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES

Domestic workers are most likely to struggle with a common mental health problem compared to women in the general population .The multiple challenges that domestic workers face can lead to high levels of stress as they often multi-task and juggle many responsibilities in addition to managing different personalities in the household where they work.

ln an interview with KeyonaTv Channel crew Sinqobile Khabo highlighted that as a domestic worker one is the first to wake up and last to retire to bed as they are given unpredictable working hours and assigned to do countless duties. Work hours may be affected by the presence of visitors or the need to help with child care at night, Khabo said.

Domestic workers highlight that juggling of many responsibilities is overwhelming. One has to manage cleaning duties, child care, help with school work, cook and serve food, do laundry and ironing all in one day.At the end of the day one has swollen feet ,a sore back and a painfull back, Khabo said.

Sinqobile highlighted that domestic workers often deal with fussy, demanding employers .
There are difficulties in settling dispute where as there is an imbalance of power between the worker and their employer, they may struggle to stand up for themselves if there is a disagreement and may struggle to get recourse when serious disputes arise.

The power dynamics involved in the domestic worker -employer relationship and result in a feeling of powerlessness and helplessness can result in depression. Domestic workers are a vital but often invisible part of our communities, Khabo said.

●IMF GIVES ZIM 2024 NATIONAL BUDGET THUMBS UP

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has commended the country's 2024 national budget, saying the fiscal policy and resource-generating measures will give impetus to economic growth for the attainment of national objectives.

In an interview with a leading radio station on Monday this week, IMF country representative Mr Carlos Caceres said the central Government’s decision to assume the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe’s liability was commendable as that would free the bank to concentrate on its mandate and help the country move towards firming its economy. He said authorities took a step in the right direction by relieving the Reserve Bank from foreign-currency liabilities.

Mr Caceres said the IMF noted that Treasury had assumed US$1,8 billion that was in the RBZ’s books as a liability which will free the central bank to focus on its core mandate.Caeceres said while fiscal and monetary authorities were on a positive economic trajectory, it was critical that the RBZ slowed down on quasi-fiscal operations like creating money as that was inflationary.
