According to recent research, stress produces physical changes in the body that might hasten the aging process. When the stress chemicals adrenaline and cortisol are released, the blood pressure goes up and the heart starts to beat quicker. Chronic dosages of adrenaline and cortisol, which are released when we are under constant stress (a constant stream of job demands, traffic jams, financial difficulties), have a detrimental effect on our physical and emotional health these days. The author of The Relaxation Response and the founder and former director emeritus of Boston's Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine, Herbert Benson, M.D., says that stress is the root cause of 60 to 90 percent of all doctor visits each year. "Anxiety, depression, obsessive anger and hostility, insomnia, high blood pressure, and heart attacks are all problems caused by stress," he says.
Practicing meditation, which activates what Dr. Benson refers to as "the relaxation response," is the most effective method to interrupt this damaging cycle of events. Using this approach, you may lose weight in as little as 10 minutes each day by repeating a mantra (a word, sound, phrase, or prayer).
It's worth a shot! Relax your muscles by rolling your head, neck, and shoulders and breathing deeply once or twice a day for 10 to 20 minutes in a quiet area. On each exhalation, recite your mantra three times (here are 10 possibilities to inspire yours). Dr. Benson advises that whenever other ideas try to intrude, you should tell yourself, "Oh, well," and return to your word or phrase. When you're through, close your eyes for another minute and let your ordinary thoughts to gently trickle back into your consciousness again. Still not convinced about the benefits of meditation? Instead, try yoga or anything physically demanding and repetitious.
