Wonderful news!

It seems these people have beaten their deadline of 30 December 2024 for this road to be "ready for use". And thank you to the Road Development Agency for the reporting it has been doing and will continue to do on various projects such as this one.

The entire 41-kilometre route from Masangano to Luanshya (designated as the "M6 road" in the Roads & Road Traffic Act, Cap 464 of Zambia) has now been rehabilitated!

We are happy to hear that things are happening on the Ndola-Mufulira Road, as it ha been a bad road for way-too-long!

Once this road is done, a "Ndola to Mufulira" trip will only be 60 kilometres, from the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium Roundabout in Ndola up to the Kitwe Road junction in Mufulira. Commuter will no-longer have tp take the longer route through Kitwe, which is an additional 35 kilometres in distance. Plus, this "Ndola-Mufulira Road" will only have one toll gate compared to the longer route which has two!

BA NDOLA|| construction of a tollgate on Ndola - Mufulira road is now underway. Just 3km from Mitengo residential area.

The under construction toll plaza which is located before Tudor Inn and Sakania International Border Post, will be Friendly City's 3rd tollgate after Micheal Sata on the Ndola-Kitwe Dual Carriageway and Kafulafuta on the Ndola-Lusaka Dual Carriageway.

Meanwhile, Mufulira road and Sakania International Border Post are currently under construction.

We are in total agreement, sir! 🤝

The Republic of Zambia is divided into 10 Provinces, which are further divided into 116 Districts, which are further divided into 156 Constituencies, which are further divided into 1622 Wards!

A province is made up of several Districts; a district is made up of one or several Constituencies; a constituency is made up of several wards.

When you went to vote at the general election on 12 August 2021, there were several departments where you had to choose a person:

1. President; representing the entire nation.

2. Mayor; representing the entire district.

3. Member of Parliament; representing the entire constituency

4. Ward Councillor; representing a ward.

So, the land of Zambia is divided into several pieces of land. If we divide according to districts, then there are 116 pieces of land. If we divide according to Wards, then there are 1622 pieces of land.

Do you know which "ward" your home or work address is part of? Here's an example:

The "Full Address" for the Z-Mart Shopping Centre in Ndola City Centre is:
"President Avenue, Ndola Town Centre, Kanini Ward, Ndola Central Constituency, Ndola District, Copperbelt Province, Zambia"

Can you write your "Full Address" in this format?

Get to know about the "Ward Councillor", "Member of Parliament" & "Mayor" that you voted in. Know where to report when there are issues in your area!

No matter the size, shape or use of land for each Constituency, all 156 of them are to be treated equally! What that means is that the entire Lusaka District receives the "Constituency Development Fund" (CDF) amount multiplied by 7 (due to having 7 Constituencies) while the entire Chililabombwe District receives the CDF amount multiplied by 1 (due to having only one constituency). We guess it's the same with "Wards" & "Districts" (equal treatment).

Last year,
The proprietor of this Page asked some of his friends,

"Ndola is called The Friendly City; Luanshya is called The Garden Town; Mufulira is called A Place of Abundance; Now, what name would you use to refer to Kitwe?"

The most common answer to that question was "The Savage City"! That's how we decided to adopt these three words as the Phrase for the city of Kitwe.

So,
Ndola is "The Friendly City",
Luanshya is "The Garden Town",
Mufulira is "A Place of Abundance"

What Phrase would you use to refer to the city of "Kitwe"?

One Year of Ndola's New Airport
(Pictures by "Zambia Airports Corporation Limited")

07 October 2022 marked 1 year of Ndola using its new airport just north of the Dag Hammarskjöld Crash Site Memorial (15 kilometres by road west of Ndola Teaching Hospital). Here's A Story:

It was in the 1950s when Ndola's Airport in the Itawa suburb became a civilian airport after being used by the military since approximately the year 1938. It is the only International Airport in Zambia north of Lusaka.

In September 2011, Michael Sata's very-first task as "President of Zambia" was to rename the 3 main international airports in Zambia. So, "Ndola International Airport" was renamed "Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport", after one of Zambia's former vice-presidents.

In the late 2010s, construction started for a new airport in Ndola, adjacent to the Dag Hammarskjöld Crash Site Memorial in Ndola West (15 kilometres west of Ndola Teaching Hospital). It would replace the airport in Ndola's Itawa suburb.

So, while the name "Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport" (SMKIA) remained applying to the airport in Itawa, the airport under construction also had to have a name, even if it would be temporary. So, it was named the "Copperbelt International Airport" (CIA).

The CIA was expected to be completed in Mid-2020, but the "COVID-19 Pandemic" caused a few delays. It was only declared as "ready to open" the next year.

Several websites on the Internet officially registered the name of the new airport as the "Copperbelt International Airport".

In 2021, it was confirmed that upon transition to the new airport, the Ndola Airport would keep the same name it was given in 2011 by President Michael Sata (Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport). So, the name "Copperbelt International Airport" would not stay.

On 30 July 2021, President Edgar Lungu gave the old location in Itawa a name, "Peter Zuze Air Force Base", named after Zambia's first indigenous air commander.

6 Days later, President Edgar Lungu's last task as President of Zambia was to commission the opening of the New Airport in Ndola. It was now time for all facilities to start the transition from the old Ndola Airport to the New Ndola Airport, which took about 2 more months to complete. The airport properly started services on 07 October 2021.

So, the old Airport was renamed the "Peter Zuze Air Force Base" and the new airport was given the name "Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe International Airport" (SMKIA). What this means is that the name "Copperbelt International Airport" (CIA) only applied to the new airport while it was "under construction" and it was no-longer in use!

The 6km road leading to the New Airport off the Ndola-Kitwe Dual Carriageway in Ndola West is only a proper tarred road up to the Dag Hammarskjöld Crash Site Memorial. The remaining 1 kilometre into the airport from there is still a dust road which needs to be transformed into a better road. That "dust road" is not a good introduction to the airport, to be honest, even if the airport itself is excellent.

So, on 07 October 2022, ZACL posted these images to "Celebrate One Year" of the "New Airport in Ndola" being in use. We hope Ndola has enjoyed its new airport so far and continues to enjoy it.

The Highlighted Route on the Map in the image is the "T3 Road". Picture from OpenStreetMap.

The T3 is the main route through the Copperbelt Province, from Kapiri Mposhi to the Kasumbalesa Border. It passes through Ndola, Kitwe, Chingola & Chililabombwe while bypassing Luanshya.

There are a total of 3 Tollgates on the route from Kapiri Mposhi to Kasumbalesa; one before Ndola (Kafulafuta), one after Ndola (Michael Chilufya Sata) & one after Kitwe (Wilson Mofya Chakulya).

As many may know, it is the only route in Zambia which is bragging about having "Dual Carriageway" sections, particularly from Ndola to Kitwe and from Kitwe to Chingola. Because of this, many have voted these "Dual Carriageway" sections as "The Best Roads in Zambia", which we agree with.

The first Dual Carriageway from Ndola to Kitwe is approximately 50 kilometres from Ndola's Levy Mwanawasa Stadium to Kitwe's City Centre. It connects the 2nd & 3rd-best cities of Zambia. It is a beautiful road that also serves the town of Luanshya; the point where the Dual Carriageway changes direction is known as the "Luanshya Junction" or "Luanshya Turn-off", just 8 kilometres north of Luanshya's town centre.

The 2nd Dual Carriageway from Kitwe to Chingola is approximately 45 kilometres, from Kitwe's Chimwemwe Area to a point south of the Chingola Town Centre. This stretch passes through the Sabina Junction and Chambishi and is also a beautiful road.

As we may know, the entire route is part of the main link between Lusaka and the neighbouring Democratic Republic Of Congo. As a result, the road is frequently occupied with trucks alongside the usual cars and buses.

As Kitwe is a busy commercial area, heavy vehicles are advised to avoid Kitwe's City Centre and northern suburbs by taking a detour route. They are advised to take the "M7 Road" from Kitwe west to Kalulushi and then the "M16 Road" from Kalulushi north to the Sabina Junction, where they rejoin the T3 road. Because this detour route makes vehicles avoid the "Wilson Mofya Chakulya Toll Plaza" just north of Kitwe, a tollgate, known as the Kalulushi-Sabina Toll Plaza, was installed on the "M16 Road" before the Sabina Junction. So, both the road from Kitwe and the road from Kalulushi have a tollgate on the way to Chambishi.

Also, A road exists for vehicles that intend to "Avoid Ndola" on the route between Kapiri Mposhi and Kitwe; it is named the "M6 Road" and is visible on the map in the image. But unfortunately, that road is currently not in a good state, which is why many vehicles still pass through Ndola on their trips between Kitwe and the south.

Let us remember that the previous government of the "Patriotic Front" initiated the construction of the "Lusaka-Ndola Dual Carriageway" & the current "New Dawn Government" has not cancelled the project, meaning that the current T3 from Kapiri Mposhi to Ndola might soon become the 3rd "Dual Carriageway" in the Copperbelt Province!

The T3 passes through many "Mining Areas", such as "Bwana Mkubwa" in Ndola, "Nkana" in Kitwe, "Chambishi" in Chambishi & "Konkola" in Chililabombwe.

This is the T3, the Main Route through the Copperbelt Province, from the Great North Road Junction at Kapiri Mposhi to the Kasumbalesa Border with DR Congo.

This is the official "Land Allocation" of the "Copperbelt Province"! Let us teach you some things which the "Social Studies" (Or "Social & Development Studies") Teacher Never Told You.

As we can see, "Ndola" & "Mufulira" do NOT touch each other (they are not "next door"), as the area in-between belongs to "Kitwe"!

Did You Know:

From our Independence in 1964 up to sometime in 1968, Luanshya was treated as "one constituency" with Kalulushi! But Today, the two land spaces do not touch (they are not "next door"), as the area in-between now belongs to "Kitwe"!

Sometime Back (Before 1997), the current "Lufwanyama District", "Mpongwe District" & "Masaiti District" were collectively known as "Ndola Rural" while the current "Ndola District" was known as "Ndola Urban". Surprising, Right?

Geography:

There are places where we have a few towns inside one Constituency (like "Masaiti Constituency" contains both "Masaiti" & "Milomwe") & there are places where we have a few Constituencies inside one city (like the city of Kitwe is made up of 5 constituencies).

Rural areas with massive land space generally have "one or two Constituencies" while Urban Areas with a little land space are divided into several to many Constituencies! For example, Lufwanyama, Mpongwe & Chililabombwe have one Constituency each while Ndola has 4 Constituencies and Kitwe has 5 Constituencies.

Tell Us, do you think it is good that "Rural District Councils" have been allocated so much land space while "Urban District Councils" have been allocated so little, as displayed on this map?

Thanks for reading! Hope you learnt something about our society of the Copperbelt!

City Number 4: Mufulira

This is "Mufulira", known as "A Place Of Abundance". It is known for having one of the most successful soccer teams as well as for the "Congo Pedicle" which is adjacent to it.

When we translate "Mufulira", it means "A Place Of Abundance and Peace". It is known for having an abundance of rich mineral deposits, forest reserves and fertile soils.

Did You Know:

In the 1930s, the settlement was created to support Copper Mining. The mine was named "Mufulira" and subsequently, the town was also named "Mufulira". That mine is now under "Mopani Copper Mines" and is one of the largest underground mines in Zambia.

Mufulira has the most successful soccer team, in terms of "Number of Trophies", namely "Mufulira Wanderers FC". This team has a total of 49 trophies in all competitions, which is only 5 more than "Nkana FC" of the neighbouring district of Kitwe! The Fans of Mufulira Wanderers are very passionate!

Mufulira is well-known for being at one end of the "Congo Pedicle Road", which is the road connecting the Copperbelt Province with the Luapula Province, with Mansa at the other end. The Mufulira town centre is almost 20 kilometres south-west of the Mokambo Border, where cars pass on the way to Mansa, as it is the shortest route. As such, Mufulira is treated as an important town for a traveller passing through it, although the road network between Mufulira and adjacent towns is in not-so-good condition at the moment.

In one of the pictures, it shows how "The Shortest Route" is not "The Fastest Route" between Mufulira and Ndola. That shows the condition of the Ndola-Mufulira road currently. The Mufulira-Kitwe road is a better route to the south, although it also needs improvement. Even the Congo Pedicle Road to the Luapula Province in the north-east needs improvement. In short, there is no good-enough road providing access to Mufulira at the moment.

Otherwise, the Mufulira District Economy depends highly on the mining industry in the area, together with Mufulira being on the route to Mansa from towns in North-Western Zambia.

Mufulira has a good structure of its roads, as shown by an old map in one of the images, with the "Main Road" passing through the centre.

Mufulira's vision statement is “To have a District of abundance, prosperity, integrity and high standard of living by 2030.”

This is Mufulira, one of the Special Towns of the Copperbelt Province!
