"Tunisia, AfDB Ink Two Grant Agreements Worth 1,867 MD."

Tunisia and the African Development Bank (AfDB), on Wednesday, inked two grant agreements worth 1,867 million dinars, said the Economy, Finance and Investment Support Ministry.

The first agreement, amounting to 480 thousand dinars, is intended to finance a study on the development project of the northwest mountainous areas.

The second grant agreement, worth 1.387 million dinars, will be used to support the implementation of public-private partnership projects.

Minister of Economy, Finance and Investment Support Ali Kooli and the AfDB Director General for North Africa Mohamed El Azizi, who signed the agreements, discussed the bilateral financial cooperation programme for 2021 in terms of financing development and budget support projects.

They reviewed the results of the new strategy launched by the AfDB to develop the pharmaceutical industry in Africa, while working to support the technical, logistical and human capacities of companies active in this sector and establishing regional partnerships to boost cooperation in this area.

The AfDB and the Ministry will soon discuss practical steps to implement this strategy through a public-private partnership, the same source said.

" launches construction of $1 billion power plant, ."

Mozambique on Monday began construction of gas-to-power plant and transmission line projects worth $1 billion in the southern province of Inhambane as the government aims to boost energy supply.

The World Bank is one of the financing partners of the infrastructure projects, alongside the United States, Norway, African Development Bank (AfDB), Islamic Bank and The OPEC Fund for International Development, according statements from the World Bank and the U.S. embassy.

"Today we mark a milestone in the framework of this endeavour to illuminate Mozambique. Our governance aspires that more than 10 million Mozambicans will have access to electricity for the first time in their homes by 2024," Mozambique President Filipe Nyusi said at the launch of the project (pictured).

Upon completion, the gas-to-power Temane Thermal Power Plant will have a capacity of 450 megawatts.

"Today, we are witnessing the exceptional beginning of a vision that aims to provide energy for all Mozambicans: this is a transformative project for the country," the representative of the World Bank in Mozambique, Idah Pswarayi-Riddihough, said during the launch.

U.S. Ambassador to Mozambique Dennis Hearne said the United States was supporting the Temane project through a $200 million direct loan for its construction via the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC).

"WATCH | 362.4 km/h! SA's Brad Binder equals MotoGP's top speed record"

Brad Binder , South Africa's MotoGP ace, on Saturday managed the notable feat of equaling the top speed record in the sport.

During his qualifying run for Sunday's Italian Grand Prix, the 25year old reached an incredible speed of 362.4km/h on his KTM, joining Ducati's Johann Zarco, who was first to achieve the feat in Qatar earlier this year.

It's been a year of transition for the Potchefstroom-born speed merchant, who last year became the first South African and first rookie since 2013 to win a Championship race when he triumphed in the Czech Republic.

He currently has 24points for the season and hasn't had a podium finish yet.

"Electronic timing to be used in Kenyan Eldoret Marathon."

This year’s Eldoret Marathon will be electronically timed, as organisers step up efforts to have the race labelled in the World Athletics marathon series.

A marathon attains bronze, silver or gold label status depending on the organisation of the race, and the course, which stands a chance of better classification if it can be used to run a world record.

The winners of Eldoret Marathon will take home Sh3.5 million in both the men’s and women’s categories, making it the best paying race in Africa. The top 20 athletes in the championship will all be given prizes.

Two officials from athletes’ management firm Galazo are expected in the country next week to train race officials on how to use the electronic gadgets. The race officials will be stationed every 5km of the race course.

The director of the June 6 race, Moses Tanui, Friday said that the electronic timing system is supposed to produce accurate results for each athlete at the end of the race, unlike the manual timing system which is based on stopwatches.

Owing to the prevailing coronavirus situation in the country,  athletes who complete outside the top 20 will leave the competition venue after finishing their races.

"Veronica Wekesa, a Kenyan entrepreneur building a new hospitality model for the travel and tourism industry."

Veronica Wekesa is a founder & CEO of , a start-up in the hospitality, travel and tourism sector that serves the needs of both property owners and guests on vacation. She has 15 years’ experience in the financial services industry where she acquired numerous skills that have helped her in running her business.

Though the business started in 2017, it was formally registered in 2020 and has since grown from 1 employee to 4 female employees. She believes in uplifting women who necessarily don't have the vocational papers to get employment, and this has been one of the underlying tenets of the business.

"What inspired you to start your company?"
My inspiration is twofold:
1. Airbnb is a wonderful platform for renting out vacation rentals, however there have been complaints from various guests about the delivery of service by hosts, We wanted to stand out from the crowd by providing the best possible service.

In Kenya, Airbnb Plus which forms the premium arm of Airbnb has not been awarded to many homes. Why? Because Kenya is not on par. Our aim is to upgrade our standards.

2. There are plenty of property owners who have second homes or travel a lot and who would like to take advantage of rental arbitrage to earn an income, but do not want to be saddled with the day to day running of the property. We provide that assistance. For example, a former colleague has a house in Mombasa but lives and works in Nairobi. We assist them in property management and they earn an income.

"Why should anyone use your service or product?."
What makes us different is that we have standardized the process and created our own brand. So when someone books through us they are assured that the house will be safe, clean and professionally run. We have also created an ecosystem by collaborating with local businesses to provide experiences to guests at a discount, this is a win-win for the property owners, guests and ourselves because we get repeat customers and referrals.

"Business Opportunities in Africa That Made More Millionaires in 2019."

5) Outsourcing
Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) is now a huge multi-billion-dollar transnational industry that is expected to reach $52 billion in market size by 2023, growing at an average rate of 11% per year.

The rising dominance of e-Commerce and the digital economy is leading companies to demand for more data, real-time services, and a presence across multiple platforms. As a result, more companies are outsourcing their accounting, data processing, customer service, human talent, and supply chain needs.

The number of BPO companies in Morocco, Tunisia, Senegal, Mauritius and Madagascar continues to skyrocket.

In Morocco, the BPO market leader in Africa, the industry employs over 70,000 people. And in Madagascar, the number of BPOs have grown from just a handful in 2005 to 233 firms in 2018.

More BPOs are setting up shop on African soil for a variety of reasons.

In Kenya, BPO firms like Samasource use local tech-savvy Africans to support some of the big names in Silicon Valley, such as , and , in their artificial intelligence efforts.

Also, in January 2019, – a company which trains African software developers and engineers and outsources them to companies in the USA and Europe – raised $100 million in funding.

As the global digital economy expands, Africa’s large pool of young, tech-savvy English and French speakers presents a major attraction and promising opportunity for global BPO firms looking to serve the growing outsourcing demand from clients in North America and Europe.

"Investors on Orbitt platform focus on East and West Africa."

provides readers with an overview of investor behaviour recorded on the Orbitt platform in the first half of 2021, as well as an analysis of the companies being engaged.

Despite lockdown measures and global travel restrictions, the number of investor enquiries made through the Orbitt platform continues to grow.

However, the aftermath of the macroeconomic events that occurred in 2020 is still being reflected in investor sentiments and risk appetite for transactions. Issues such as “non-payment of eurobond debt service”, the “drop in oil prices” and most especially “access to foreign currency” have been cited as key considerations from investors.

As currency concerns across the continent continue, investors on the Orbitt platform have seemingly focused on businesses with some foreign currency income as a risk mitigant.

Other risk mitigants such as holding company guarantees, currency hedging and additional insurance products have been heavily emphasised in deal structures.

Generally, global investors favoured companies with exports from Africa to both Asia and Europe, whereas African banks and more regional-based players expressed interest in the import-focused transactions.

East and West Africa remain the regional focus for investors, but with varying transaction profiles.

For example, the average transaction size in West Africa was $25m, compared to the $10m average recorded in East Africa.

Although the sectors of interest recorded were similar, investors expressed more interest in Technology, Financial Services and Healthcare in East Africa than in West Africa.

"The Orbitt perspective"
Opportunities in Africa continue to be of interest to investors, specifically in West and East Africa despite macroeconomic factors.
Lenders continue to employ additional risk mitigating features and credit enhancements to their deal strategy, while favouring transactions supporting the exportation of goods and services from Africa to both Asia and Europe.

" Approves U.S.$700 Million for Water Supply, Sanitation Programmes."

The World Bank has approved the Nigeria Sustainable Urban and Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene Program (SURWASH).

The $700 million credit from the bank's subsidiary, the International Development Association (IDA) will provide six million people with basic drinking water services and 1.4 million people access to improved sanitation services in the West African country.

According to a statement, the program would deliver improved water sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services to 2,000 schools and Health Care Facilities and assist 500 Communities to achieve open defecation free status.

These would be implemented as part of the Government of Nigeria's National Action Plan (NAP) for the revitalisation of Nigeria's water supply, sanitation, and hygiene sector, it added.

"In 2019, approximately 60 million Nigerians were living without access to basic drinking water services, 80 million without access to improved sanitation facilities and 167 million without access to a basic hand washing facility.

"In rural areas, 39 percent of households lack access to at least basic water supply services, while only half have access to improved sanitation and almost a third (29 percent) practice open defecation - a fraction that has marginally changed since 1990.
"In recent years, the Government of Nigeria (GoN) has strengthened its commitment towards improving access to WASH services, spurred on by the need for Nigeria's WASH sector to catch up with its regional counterparts. This led to the government declaring a state of emergency in 2018 and launching the NAP aimed at ensuring universal access to sustainable and safely managed WASH services by 2030, commensurate with the SDGs," it added.

Furthermore, the statement explained that the program would support the NAP which is a 13-year strategy prioritising actions within three phases: Emergency Plan, Recovery Plan, and Revitalization Strategy and also the Clean Nigeria; Use the Toilet Campaign which aims to have Nigeria free of open defecation by 2025.

"Chilima Dazzled With Cancer Centre Progress - Facility Will Be Fully Operational By June 2022."

"I have been assured that by June next year, this facility will be a fully fledged centre."

The cancer centre currently under construction in Malawi's capital, Lilongwe will be fully operational as of June 2022, government authorities have disclosed.

Currently, the facility only provides chemotherapy but by June 2022 the hospital will be offering radiotherapy as well marking the full opening of the facility.

Malawi's vibrant vice president Saulos Klaus Chilima, who is popularly known as SKC in the political arena on Tuesday inspected the project, appeared dazzled with the progress of the facility having been assured that the centre will be fully operational by June, next year.

"This is good news. I have been assured that by June next year this facility will be fully fledged centre. So far they are just offering chemotherapy and are yet to start radiotherapy," said Chilima.

The vice president was accompanied by Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda as well as several top government officials.

Earlier, the vice president held reforms quarterly progress review meetings with Lilongwe City and District Councils.

Malawi's government is also building a brand-new cancer centre on the campus of Kamuzu Central Hospital and among other other services, the centre will provide radiation therapy, so patients who need the treatment will no longer have to leave the country - or go without.

Direct Relief has secured cancer medications for Malawi through a partnership with the pharmaceutical company Amgen.

The organization has provided chemotherapies along with other supportive medications both to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital and, through UNC Project Malawi, to Kamuzu Central Hospital.

"There are a lot of gaps and stopgaps. The support we get from Direct Relief fills some of those gaps," said Innocent Mofolo, country director of UNC Project Malawi.

"The Mandela Rhodes Foundation Launches $80k Äänit Prize for Social Impact in Africa"

Nelson Mandela's official legacy organisation for leadership development has announced a new prize.

The Äänit Prize will award up to $80,000 per year to projects and organisations that can deliver positive social impact in Africa.

The prize will be open to alumni of the Mandela Rhodes Scholarship and the Rhodes Scholarship and is funded by Ezrah Charitable Trust, started by Rhodes Scholar and MRF donor David Cohen.

Professor Njabulo S. Ndebele, chairman of the board of The Mandela Rhodes Foundation said he is delighted about the prize.

"Our vision for entrepreneurship in Africa stems from our mandate to address inequality and contribute to the achievement of true equality, and to the alleviation of poverty and suffering. We know that innovative and creative individuals can make a significant difference to the lives of people across the continent."

MRF CEO Judy Sikuza said, "We are very excited to announce the Äänit Prize as part of our  focus on expanding the impact of our alumni. The prize will support both for-profit and non-profit initiatives with the potential to transform the lives of Africa's most marginalised populations.

We will be looking for potential for positive impact, ideas that are feasible, and teams capable of executing them."

Some of Africa's leading thinkers have lent their support in a video released Tuesday. Mrs Graça Machel, champion of women's rights and founder of The Graça Machel Trust said "I am delighted to hear about the Äänit Prize. There are many talented young people in the Mandela Rhodes and Rhodes Scholar communities with brilliant ideas, who can make those ideas come to fruition with the right support."

Dr Mo Ibrahim, telecommunications titan and founder of the Ibrahim Index of African Governance, said "Business must indeed be linked to society's needs, instead of just being about profit regardless of whether the impact is positive or negative. That's probably what Madiba would have told us to do."

"Being African is to come from a land of complexity. It is to live with the horrors of the past and present, but welcome the excitement of the unknown future.

I am an African.

Not because of my coloured skin or how I look and speak.

I am African because of everything I have been taught by the people of this continent and everyone that I have met.

No matter where I go, I will always be an African.

I will share stories and experiences on what it has been like growing up in Africa, while gaining others from those around me.

I will lose myself in the abundance of westernised culture but always appreciate, love and celebrate the cultures that I have found on African soil.

Even those I have yet to learn.

I will celebrate the human rights I have while aiding in the struggle of those who do not.

I will understand that regardless of race, Africa is a home to many, and I cannot dictate who or who not may call themselves African.

I will be African. Now, and forever more."
