Northdene Preparatory School Grade Six learner Muhammed Talhah Shaik Abdulla recently did himself and his school proud at the Reading Riot Competition final held at the University of Pretoria (UP).
The 11-year-old, who was representing the province and his school, earned the accolade of being named the fourth-best Grade Six reader in South Africa.
The Reading Riot competition is a national initiative that promotes literacy and comprehension skills and also fosters a love of reading.
The competition also sees more than 2 800 learners from schools across the country compete, underscoring how impressive Muhammed’s achievement was.

Being kind and helping others is something that is central to how Shaun Viljoen lives his life.
Not only does he embody this in everyday life but he also puts it into action.
The Grade Six learner attends West Park School which caters for learners with intellectual challenges.
“I enjoy helping people and my fellow learners in any way I can. I also help my teachers with whatever they need. They are always willing to help me, and I like to show them how much they mean to me with love and respect. It makes me feel good knowing I can make a difference. It can be anything – I also enjoy helping them clean and mop the floors of the classroom,” he said.
Shaun is also a talented athlete and has excelled at the school’s athletics day and swimming.

Northdene Preparatory School learner Shivam Naidoo has goals of one day obtaining his South African Colours in chess.
The talented Grade Six learner was recently selected for the Durban and Districts (D&D) Chess Team.
In term one, Shivam and his school won the Queensburgh and Districts (Q&D) Chess Tournament, a feat they matched from last year.
The 12-year-old explained that his chess journey began at an early age and also touched on his recent achievement.
“I started playing chess when I was six years old. I downloaded a chess game on my iPad, and I found myself enjoying it. I learned the game of chess on my own and found I had a passion for it. I was absolutely delighted with my D&D achievement as I have worked really hard to achieve this goal. I’m also proud to wear my D&D badge.

Mekayla Henderson has been making waves in the sport of swimming.
She attends West Park School which caters for learners with intellectual challenges.
This year, she has proven her mettle at two swim meets, the first being the Umlazi District Swimming Trials in January.
Mekayla then competed at the South African Schools’ Para Swimming Champs, which was a national gala at Kings Park Swimming Pool.
She won nine medals at the competition, which included three gold.
“It felt amazing being part of the competition as I had never competed in one before. I loved being a part of it all. Winning nine medals wasn’t something I had planned on doing, but I was shocked, amazed and happy at the same time. The support from my school and my family also made it a proud moment for me. I hope to continue to improve my swimming, and I feel my coaches (Amy and Hayden) have helped me excel. I also try where I can motivate other learners to swim, as well,” she said.

Northdene Preparatory School learner Taygen Roden has been making waves in the pool at club and school.
The Grade Seven learner recently competed at her school gala where she won three races, broke two records and was named Victrix Ludorum.
Taygen, who is captain of the swimming team, broke the 400m freestyle record with a time of 06:19 (with the old record of 06:25), and the 100m individual medley with a time of 01:26 (with the old record of 01:41).

The Grade Eight learner attends West Park School, which caters for learners with intellectual challenges.
Palesa recently raised R4 000 for learners leaving the school at the age of 18 at a Valentine’s Day fundraiser.
Palesa also got an honourable mention at Kingsway High School recently when she gave a speech on inclusivity to several high school Representative Council of Learners (RCL).
