But in the late 90s, after the country had transitioned to majority rule, Elsie Vaalbooi, a N❘uu speaker, appealed on local radio for other speakers to come forward. It emerged that there were around 20 ageing speakers of the language in the Northern Cape region.

Tyla Water “My parents did not want me to do music. They always wanted me to go to school, because I was very intelligent.

I used to go to school, but every weekend, I would sneak out to go and do music. They were very angry with me and wanted me to do mining engineering, but when I dropped my first song and it got so many people listening, they decided to let me do music often.

When I won my first Grammy award, they told me I'm now free to do whatever I wanted. I took them to America for the first time, and they saw me win my first Grammy.

It was one of the happiest moments of my life, and we partied to celebrate it like 100 times.” — South African singer Tyla with Capital Buzz in the UK 🇬🇧
