Q: Youโre not only a tourism guru but an academic as well. On a post on X, you said that serious engagements are needed with tertiary institutions over travel and tourism qualifications as they not helping the sector at all. What are some of the key aspects the education system need to consider to better the qualifications?
Oupa: It may sound controversial, but if I were the minister of education or had the powers, I would scrap out those qualifications. It doesnโt help the tourism sector at all. What the students are taught is something they can learn on their own.
Every worker that works in our establishments have to be trained from scratch. We donโt want people who will tell what tourism is, but employees who will run our businesses. These graduates have no clue and their qualifications are useless.

Q: Youโve hold vital offices such as president of the Kruger Lowveld Chamber of Business and Tourism, and current board chairperson of the Southern Africa Tourism Services Association - How do you think you have contributed to the tourism sector in South Africa?
Oupa: I canโt quantify each day. As citizens of the country, we need to work for the betterment of the country. Many of us canโt afford to live anywhere other than this country. It is upon us to, at least, contribute a to a positive cause that will make South Africa work. Working in a tourism organistion is my little role to contribute to a better South Africa, not for only myself but for everyone else. Without tourism, there is no economy. It activates the economy itself. Therefore, someone must be responsible to make it work.

Q: What are some of your passions?
Oupa: I love people, putting things together and seeing people enjoy those things. I love clothes and fashion. I grew up thinking Iโd be a fashion designer, specifically a lingerie designer. I grew up with a fascination for Victoria Secret lingerie which I watched most of its shows on a black and white TV. My passion is spending time in the bush.

Q: What took to make the Oupa Pilane you are today?
Oupa: It took a lot of perseverance, patience, prayer, hard work, network and being intentional about what I do. It didnโt happen by accident. I sat and looked at my life, strength, weaknesses and asked myself how can I reposition myself.
There werenโt a lot of black people in the tourism sector and that was my opportunity to get in. It was intentional to be venture into this sector.

Q: In view of your life as someone who lives intentionally, what kind of legacy are your creating?
Oupa: At the end of my life, I donโt want to leave businesses and buildings. I want to leave behind someone who will say โif it was not for this old man, I would not be hereโ. I want to leave a legacy that changes someoneโs life.

Q: Did you envision yourself being a tourism and business-minded individual?
Oupa: Not at all. I never thought Iโd be where I am today. I was a teacher by profession. I thought if things didnโt work out in politics, Iโd get into lecturing. I loved working in the public sector and thatโs what I enjoyed the most. I never thought Iโd do something different. When there were sanctions in the province, thatโs when I had to relook my life and asked what I wanted to do. I remember working with Robert Gumede in Johannesburg and just thought I needed to go back to Mpumalanga and do something different. I looked at various kinds of economies I can venture into. At that time there was no voice in tourism and thatโs what I thought Iโd do.
