In the early hours of Thursday morning, a fire ripped through a five storey building in the Johannesburg CBD killing, at last count, 73 people.

A Malawian national who was living in the five-story building in Johannesburg CBD when a fire broke out, told IOL how she had to jump from the second floor with her luggage while the fire engulfed the building.

“By midnight, I just heard people screaming and crying saying, ‘fire’ inside, ‘fire!’”

The sound of people shouting echoed through the burning building in Johannesburg CBD, said a survivor who was trapped inside.

A lucky group of students from Redhill School in Johannesburg got to be amongst the first few to experience a Night Safari & Boma Dinner at Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary just outside Plettenberg Bay before the tours officially open to the public on the 1st of September 2023.

Home to several of the majestic big cats of the world – Lions, Tigers, Leopards, Pumas and Jaguars - the animals have all been rescued or rehomed from facilities that could no longer care for them. Red lights are used on the night safaris as they don’t irritate the animals.

Jukani is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA), which also includes Monkeyland and Birds of Eden.

Australia showed yet again why they are the undisputed champions of netball.

The Aussie Diamonds sealed a 61-45 win over England to claim their record 12th Netball World Cup title in front a packed arena at the Cape Town International Convention Centre to bring down the curtain on the 2023 tournament.

The win can also be seen as redemption Australia as they lost the final by just one point against New Zealand at the Liverpool tournament four years ago.

The Australians were contesting their ninth consecutive gold-medal match, having never finished lower than second in the tournament’s 60-year history.

The Aussies were handed the trophy by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa who was attendance at the World Cup today.

The City of Cape Town is seeking an urgent interdict against the violence and lawlessness associated with the taxi strike action that began on Thursday afternoon. Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis also condemned these actions.

The City has confirmed violent protests near the Khayelitsha taxi rank. Two law enforcement cars were stoned and two buses were also set alight in Nyanga.

MyCiTi bus passengers were also forced off buses during the afternoon. The N2 outbound was also blocked by slow-moving minibus-taxis.

The South African National African National Taxi Council (Santaco) retracted from engagements with the City and the Western Cape Government last week and due to unfair discriminatory practices towards minibus taxis, Santaco has decided to cease operations immediately until August 10, 2023.

The violent strike actions follow clashes between taxi operators and the City’s traffic officers in the CBD on Tuesday. These clashes saw cars stoned and commuters stranded for hours.

While the City of Cape Town claimed it was not declaring war against the taxi industry, mayoral committee member for safety and security JP Smith has proclaimed that they will “proceed with impounding 25 vehicles for every truck, bus, vehicle or facility that is burnt or vandalised”.

The City is also seeking an urgent interdict amid mayhem and violence that erupted shortly after the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in the Western Cape announced their stayaway.

Thousands of commuters across the province were affected when Santaco, joined by eight regional associations met in Makhaza, Khayelitsha and resolved to down tools over issues including the impoundments of vehicles.

People stood in long queues at bus stops and terminuses, with some stranded commuters, including pupils, telling the Cape Times they remained at the ranks because they were fearful to use buses as some were attacked. Other commuters opted to walk home.

The South African National Taxi Council has decided to embark on a stay-away for six days.

This was decided by all eight regions who gathered at the Desmond Tutu Community Hall in Makhaza, Khayelitsha.

Chairperson Mandla Hermanus said after the clash with the City’s law-enforcement the taxi industry decided to hold a meeting.

Some of the reasons of the actions are impoundments which they said were unlawful.

“Cars are impounded for frivolous things such as a driver smoking while driving alone in the van.

“Another reason is having an elbow out or cracked number plates,” he added.

“We will keep protesting until the City stops impounding for no reasons.”

DA leader John Steenhuisen has come under fire from the ANC and the GOOD Party following his party’s march in Cape Town to protest amendments to the Employment Equity Act which it describes as “the ANC’s new race quotas.”

The Employment Equity Amendment Bill, which has measures to promote diversity and equality in the workplace was signed into law by President Cyril Ramaphosa in April.

The bill paves the way for the employment and labour minister to, among others, identify and set employment equity numerical targets for each economic sector.

But the DA has joined trade union Solidarity to mount a legal action in court to stop what it says is a “draconian race-based Act”.

Steenhuisen led the march to Parliament, which he described as a “crime scene.”

The demands by the SA Municipal Workers Union (Samwu) for salary increases took the spotlight during a council meeting in Tshwane House, with the ANC insisting that mayor Cilliers Brink go out to address workers who had reconvened outside.

Brink, however, refused by saying that addressing workers “would undermine the position of the city manager in managing the employer-employee relationship”.

Workers demonstrated again in spite of a violent march on Wednesday which erupted in a clash with the police. Marchers hurled beer bottles and cans at the police, who used stun grenades to disperse them.

Today is the 30th remembrance day of the Saint James Church massacre.

The bloodbath was perpetrated on St James Church of England in South Africa in Kenilworth, Cape Town, South Africa, on 25 July 1993 by four members of the Azanian People's Liberation Army (APLA).

Eleven members of the congregation were killed and 58 were wounded. In 1998 the attackers were granted amnesty for their acts by the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

“I remember walking into the church,” Bishop Frank Retief, pastoral leader of Kenilworth’s St James Church congregation recalled years later of the attack during the evening service of July 25, 1993, “and seeing a group of medics working frantically among the splintered pews, trying to save a life.

"As I walked up, someone turned round and said: ‘Bishop, this man’s got no legs.’ I will never forget that moment. I’ll never forget any of it.”

“When I got there, I could not believe what I was seeing. You must understand, this is where we had spent our entire working lives, it was all we knew and we knew it well, as a place of great joy and happiness, a place with a buzz. And here was this devastation and death, blood all over, bodies lying in the aisles, their feet sticking out from under blankets, groups of people weeping. People dying, right there.”

Hours before a public lecture by Kenyan professor Patrick Loch Otieno Lumumba as part of the EFF’s 10th anniversary celebrations, LGBTQIA+ activist organisations, students and staff protested outside the Sarah Baartman Hall at the University of Cape Town (UCT), where the lecture was to be held.

The plaza in front of the hall was the epicentre of the protest yesterday as scores of EFF members sang while facing off against many q***r and solidarity activist groups who had gathered to protest against Lumumba’s lecture.

Lumumba was invited by the EFF to deliver the lecture on the progression of Pan-Africanism. Lumumba was flanked by EFF president Julius Malema inside the venue. While Lumumba was greeted by roaring cheers inside the venue, a silent vigil was held for those who had violently lost their lives due to their sexuality.

Organisations present included the SA Students Congress (Sasco) UCT, UCT Student Representative Council, Triangle Project, and Gender DynamiX, among others.

What was advertised as a public lecture saw strict control of who could enter the venue.

South African Sign Language (SALS) is now South Africa’s 12th official language.

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Wednesday signed the Constitution Eighteenth Amendment Bill, the South African Sign Language Bill, into law.

On May 2, the National Assembly approved that Section 6 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, 1996 be amended to include SASL as an official language to promote the rights of persons who are deaf and hard of hearing.

With this initiative, South Africa becomes the fourth country on the African continent to recognise sign language as an official language; other countries are Kenya, Zimbabwe and Uganda.

The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) said this was a significant milestone for the country’s constitutional democracy which guarantees in its founding provisions human dignity, equality and the advancement of human rights and freedoms.

There has been a massive gas explosion in the Johannesburg CBD, causing substantial damage to nearby roads and causing sinkholes.

Videos seen on social media showed cars toppled along Johannesburg’s Bree Street.

According to an alert sent by the Johannesburg Joint Operating Committee of Alexandra, Midrand, Sandringham and Sandton, the explosion took place at about 5.46pm.

“We are aware of an explosion on Bree Street in the Johannesburg CBD possibly on the gas lines underground.

“At this time we request the public to stay clear of the area to allow emergency services to attend to the scene,” said the note.

ER24, City of Johannesburg EMS, Disaster Management and several other services responded following the reports of the underground gas explosion.

“On scene, medics and rescue personnel discovered several overturned vehicles along the road, which seemed to have been split wide open,” ER24 said in a statement.

In a first for the Cape Metro, the Western Cape Department of Social Development (WCDSD) has launched a Victim Empowerment Programme (VEP) Forum and Gender-Based Violence (GBV) Ambassadors model in Delft.

These initiatives follow a robust imbizo held in Delft in April, in which Department officials engaged with residents and stakeholders to find community-led solutions to prevent and combat GBV in Delft.

The launch of a transversal VEP Forum, a GBV Help Desk, and a GBV Ambassadors model in Delft is part of the Department’s commitment to expanding GBV services in the area.

“The hard work of DSD staff in Delft has led to today’s launch. It is also thanks to the invaluable input and commitment from residents and stakeholders who are working with the Department in implementing solutions to address the scourge of GBV. It is only through partnerships with the community, NGOs, and all government spheres that we can make any difference in preventing and facing head on violence against women, children, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and men,” says provincial Minister of Social Development, Sharna Fernandez.

Imam Achmad Cassiem, former Robben Island prisoner, Pan Africanist Congress member and founding member of the Qibla Movement passed away on Friday 14 July 2023, at the age of 78.

As a teenager, Achmad Cassiem was politically conscientised by the Pan Africanist Congress’s campaign against apartheid pass laws, motivating him to join the armed struggle at the age of 15.

He was a high school learner when he and his teacher, Sadiq Isaacs, were arrested for sabotage, detained and charged under the Sabotage Act.

He was handed a five-year sentence, which caused him to become one of the youngest prisoners on Robben Island.

Upon his release, he was issued with a banning order, which he defied to remain politically active, including his role in the establishment in 1979 of the Qibla Movement to promote and defend Islam in South Africa.

9-year-old Mila Taljaard walks around the shark exhibition at the Iziko Museum in Cape Town.

In collaboration with Iziko South African Museum and presented by Experi-Buddies, a thrilling Shark Awareness Workshop for children, takes place on the 14th & 15th of July.

From the Whale Shark - the largest fish in the sea, spanning up to 12 meters in length - to the Great White Shark (aka the "White Pointer") - the deadliest shark in the sea.

South African waters are home to more than 30 species of sharks. Presented by Experi-Buddies - an extra-mural programme that incorporates exciting experiments to show young children that science can be endlessly entertaining - the workshop delves into the world of these mysterious and majestic creatures that have inhabited the planet for millions of years.

Each hour-long workshop will give children the opportunity to perform three of their own experiments, teaching them about the different types of sharks, how they live, what they eat, their survival, and why we need to protect them.

A ticket costs R200 per child, which includes entrance to the museum. Please note that children need to be accompanied by an adult who only needs to pay R60 entrance (R40 if the adult presents a valid South African ID).

Several members of the Ukraine Association of South Africa staged a protest with flags and anti-war posters outside of the Artscape Theatre where the Russian ballet production, Swan Lake, was being performed.

With the version first performed in St Petersburg in 1895, the world’s most famous ballet was composed by Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky in 1875.

The Ukraine Association has called on the South African government to boycott all Russian arts from being presented in the country until Vladimir Putin stops the invasion of Ukraine.

According to the UN, more than 9,000 civilians, including 500 children, have been killed since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022.

A few Humpback whales play in the waters along the Sea Point promenade.

Humpback whales are found in every ocean in the world.

Their Latin name, Megaptera novaeangliae, means "big wing of New England." It refers to their giant pectoral fins, which can grow up to 16 feet long, and their appearance off the coast of New England, where European whalers first encountered them.

They have dark backs, light bellies, pleats on their throats, and a small hump in front of their dorsal fins, leading to the common name of "humpback."

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) said while there was general excitement around the snowfall, particularly in Gauteng, the party was concerned about the plight of the poor communities living on the streets and in shacks.

While parts of South Africa regularly receive snowfall, the experience of snow is rare in Gauteng, and the phenomenon brought much awe, with several Joburg residents taking photos in the snow.

The City of Johannesburg previously experienced snowfall in August 2012.

The South African Weather Service has said the inclement weather will continue into the week.

EFF national spokesperson Sinawo Thambo said the impact of the harsh weather was devastating among the vulnerable community members.

A coating of snow and slush greeted Gauteng residents on Monday morning as the first significant snowfall of the winter fell in various areas.

Snow was observed over areas in the south, such as Soweto, Alberton, and Roodepoort.

Some of the areas that observed snow include the eastern areas of Gauteng, Heidelberg, and parts of Vosloorus.

It is reported that, though the SA Weather Service (SAWS) had advised that cold weather conditions were expected in Gauteng, it did not anticipate the snow yesterday morning.

The SAWS added that the snow is not expected toa continue into the afternoon.

‘’Confirmed! What has been observed in parts of Gauteng, including Soweto, Alberton, Roodepoort, Heidelberg, and Vosloorus, is indeed snow. Light snowfall and sleet are still possible in parts of Mpumalanga today.’’

Vodacom is currently investigating the cause of a fire after its head office building in Century City, Cape Town caught alight on Sunday morning.

Several social media users posted about fire, speculating that it was due to solar panels that caught alight. Some also issued a warning to avoid Century City if possible. However, the cause of the fire has not been confirmed at this time.

According to Vodacom’s head of media relations, Byron Kennedy, Vodacom can confirm that the fire is being attended to by fire services and appears to be “under control“.

“The City's Fire and Rescue Service was alerted just after 11am of solar panels alight on the roof of the building. Upon arrival of the first crew, additional resources were requested. Two hydraulic platforms were also dispatched,” said Fire & Rescue Spokerson, Jermaine Carelse, in a statement.

Organised by the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) Cape Town, the “vigil” took place at the Sea Point Promenade, yesterday.

The attack on Jenin is considered one of the worst in the occupied West Bank in 20 years. Roads leading to the camp had been bulldozed by Israeli forces, hampering efforts by medical personnel to reach the injured.

As of 2022, the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) listed 23 628 registered refugees in the camp.
