A group of unhappy artists have reached out to Free State Premier, Sisi Ntombela, regarding the plight artists face in the province.

The request comes as a group of the artists stage a sit-in at the Pacofs building in Bloemfontein, until the newly elected council comes back to them regarding a 2018 investigative report that allegedly finds the current artistic director and acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Meshack Xaba, guilty of wrongdoing.

The Provincial Coordinator of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (Ccifsa) in the Free State, Mbuyiselo Nqodi, tells OFM News, Ntombela’s office has promised to come listen to the group’s concerns as soon as she is available in the coming week. Nqodi and company want the Pacofs council to factor in the findings of the 2018 report and oust Xaba as the acting CEO and incumbent artistic director of the centre. He says Xaba and the artistic committee have been deliberately depriving artists in the industry of opportunities to stage productions, but caution that they aren’t the only problem.

“Our engagement is not going to end here at Pacofs, because the Premier is a part of the problem.” He cites the cancellation of the Mangaung African Cultural Festival (Macufe) for a second year running as a problem, because the funding that is allocated to the Provinical Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation for the festival has been redirected for the second time, depriving artists of gigs to survive. “We are simply here to try and fix this institution and this is our effort. We hope it will succeed and we’re doing everything we can to soldier on,” says Ndoqi on the sit-in.

Xaba ascended to the role of CEO – albeit on a temporary basis - In November of 2020 when the then CEO of Pacofs, Peter Pedlar, was suspended pending an investigation into his conduct. Pedlar joined the troubled centre in 2019 amidst expectations that he would turn the institution around.

Nqodi alleges that the industry is not represented on the artistic committee that reviews proposals for productions and submits them to the council for final consideration. He says that this maligns them and prejudices local artists. The committee is reportedly made up of people from institutions of higher learning in the city, as well as the arts and culture department.

Pacofs is yet to comment on the allegations leveled against them.

We find it Very shocking as youth of the Frestate, we've been protasting in different institutions and the Premier of the Frestate has even attended us to address our concerns or grievances. Now we had a rumor that the premier will be meeting a bunch of Corrupt hullugans so called artists who have made a sitting at Pecofs since last week Wednesday. This are some of the people who have been insulting the premier on Social media demanding Macufe fees looking forward to looting it not knowing that those funds where redirected to Covid 19 funds or are you Going to negotiate the 20% to Mbuiselo Ngqodi and Ayanda Roda involved.. Premier back off and consantrante on the education of a black child and the youth our times.. Unless if you are a corrupt leader...

Ayanda Rhoda is the owner of Danduza productions. Danduza productions benefitted for many years at PACOFS during the time of Ms Nicky Hassett, who funded Ayanda to stage a failed Afrofest music show.

PACOFS did not generate any revenue from this show. Ayanda Rhoda exploited the artists who performed in these shows by paying them peanuts. He is the only person who benefited by pocketing the large sums of the money that was meant for the artists. It seems highly likely that Nicky Hassett was getting kickbacks from Ayanda Rhoda.

After Mr Meshack Xaba was appointed as Artistic Director, he became aware of this looting and he stopped the Afrofest project. Ayand Rhoda and Nicky Hassett started plotting against Mr Xaba.

When PACOFS was planning for the Gospel Music Festival in 2018, Nicky Hassett defied his superiors and engaged Ayanda Rhoda to organize artists for this Gospel show. They disguised by using the name of Blacroots productions instead of Danduza productions. Again, Mr Xaba stopped this fraud attempt by Ayanda and Nicky. Again, they continued to plot for his exit because he stood in their way they couldn't loot anymore.

Nicky Hassett was finally charged and dismissed from PACOFS and Ayanda has not received any projects from PACOFS in the past two years.

It is therefore important that the current action by Ccifsa, which is led by Ayanda who is suspended, be viewed agaisnt the above background. This is nothing but to get rid of Mr Xaba, so that Ayanda and his cronies, including Nicky and Wits can be able to loot the institution. They are just fabricating the allegations against Mr Xaba.

The plan is to get rid of him, get Wits to act as Artistic Director, bring back Nicky Hassett and create platform for Ayanda Rhoda and all his cronies to join in the looting. This is the plan and this has nothing to do with the plight of Free State artists, it is about individuals who have their eyes on the cookie jar. Mr Xaba is standing in the way a d that's why the want him out..
