In her work, Eeva Maria Leino emphasizes our connection with nature. Her worldview could be described a bit animistic and based on Finno-Ugric shamanistic traditions. Storytime! Why I moved back to Finland from the US (My best attempt at explaining it)

I used to live in the US for 10 years. Towards the end, small things started piling up that made me miss Finland more and more. Maybe they were strange things? I missed ample sidewalks and easy strolls to the grocery store and not having to drive everywhere. I missed being able to go to any forest on a whim and it being completely normal… Bringing a bucket and picking blueberries. I missed going to a properly hot sauna and jumping into a cool lake after. I missed bustling city centers with cafes, parks, and people. I missed appreciation for time off and I missed literal time off. I was turning into a workaholic for no reason. American people are friendly and enchanting, and I mean it, but the culture felt unfriendly somehow. Competitive and uncompassionate compared to the atmosphere I grew up with in Finland. I couldn’t ignore it…
To be poetic, I began feeling the call of the north. Perhaps melodramatically and totally national-romantically, I read the Kalevala in an attempt to feel connected to my roots, to any roots perhaps. It was a strange longing for both wilder and freer living *and* for a society that’s more structured and equal in its approach.
I think it’s a Nordic thing.
We have huge respect and love for nature that’s instilled in us since we’re babies. The Nordic way of being is passed down, it’s the way of life, it’s normal: self-care is built in. And care for others is, as well. Groundedness and connection to nature are, to me, the greatest gifts of our culture and wisdom.
Sometimes I miss my second home, the US, and what I most miss about it are the moments I was swept off my feet by its magical nature. And it happened all the time: the incredible mountains, the red desert that hides secret life, prairies and the scent of sage, jungle-like forests with ancient redwood and ferns taller than me, and the warm, powerful ocean waves forever crashing at the shores.
The most connection I feel there, too, is with nature. That tells me something 💙

In Finland, Valentine's Day is called "Ystävänpäivä" which translates to "Friend's Day". It's not a romantic holiday like in many countries, but a day to celebrate friendship. People give gifts and cards to anyone - friends, colleagues, loved ones. 💌

Aurora Borealis is called "revontulet" in Finnish. The word means "fox fires" and comes from an old folk tale about an Arctic fox running around with its tail brushing up against snowy rocks and hills, making sparks fly up to to the sky. 🦊❄🔥
The past few days now we've been able to see some Northern Lights even in the south of Finland. I set up an Aurora Borealis watching station outside last night and laid down in a sun chair with 2-3 feet of snow around me, in total countryside darkness (and a blanket). Only the moon lit up the sky along with the stars and - luckily - some sparkling, magical fox fires dancing above.

Meet a Nordic Guardian Goddess: HILLERVO
In Finnish mythology, Hillervo is the mother of otters. Her protegés are the masters of survival and wit. They personify sensitivity, authenticity, and childlike playfulness.
In the folk traditions, martens (weasel family) are mentioned as the totem animals of witches and goddesses. It’s not a wonder, these creatures are super-quick and resourceful!
Otters symbolize the ability to dive deep spiritually. The common elements for all these animals are gentleness, strength, and playfulness--all values that tend to be underrated in our society.
💎 Hillervo's message for you:
Examine your sensitivity. How much space do you allow for authenticity? We may have lost some of our genuine joy and playfulness under the burden of daily responsibilities. Even the burdens of the generations before us might weigh on our shoulders pushing us to stress and overcompensate in daily life. We may overextend ourselves on the inside but look energetic and productive on the outside. By adapting to these patterns we may punish even our children with strict expectations and sternness. Allow yourself and others a leisurely, slower-paced life. Don’t overachieve trying to prove the world that you’re a proper citizen.
