My concern for current RED owners is they don’t scrap the RF mount. Too many new lenses have been released utilizing the RF introduction of the Z mount will only muck things up.

No one asked me but…I’ve been an advocate that RED allow other manufacturers to use their amazing R3d compressed raw format. Next to CineForm I consider R3d to be one of the best recording codecs ever made. (If you are not familiar with CineForm google the specs and see if you don’t agree with me.)
R3d are visually lossless compressed raw video files that are virtually unbreakable in post and can be played back on any level of machine. Compressed raw also means greatly reduced file sizes making storage of video cheaper. It is an amazing feat of technology.
Our industry would benefit greatly if all cameras simply recorded in both CineForm and R3d from not only a standardized cross platform benefit for ease in post but also creatives would not have to know what limitations of the many other codecs each manufacturer has come up with.
Now that RED has partnered with ARRI for this is there a chance that ARRI will scrap ARRI raw and go to R3d in some crazy partnership? Doubtful but fun to imagine a world like that.

After over a year long wait, our New Years baby has arrived! VBM’s Leica R lens rehousing project has finally been completed. These unique, vintage lenses have made the transition to full fledged cinema lenses.
The set includes curated Elmarit-R and Summicron-R lenses, which were hand picked for optimal optics and incredible color matching across the set.
After all the work of putting together an incredible set of lenses, I made the decision to commit to rehousing them. I sought out and found what I would consider to be the best company to do the work - Whitepoint Optics in Helsinki, Finland. I’ve never held rehoused lenses that have the look and feel that these lenses have. I am absolutely floored by how great of a job they did, and I believe that you will be too!
The Leica-Rs will cover full frame and super 35 sensors.

Retro products traditionally pop up every few decades. Now, a post-pandemic world is speeding up the nostalgia cycle.

The resolution race seemed to slow down a little as well. Even though DJI eluded that they were thinking of releasing an 8K version of the 6K RONIN it took them a while to bring it to market.

It's nearing the end of 2023, and we are announcing a new Super 8 camera release. Kodak’s new Super 8 camera is exciting and looks retro too. It has an industrial design, lens options, and a complete system. The camera was first shown at CES 2017 and was priced around $2000.

Apple’s latest announcement Scary Fast showcasing their latest M3 MackBooks processor also incorporated their iPhone 15 and showcased the video capabilities of the phone. They also used the Black Magic Camera app for control. They put the phone through its paces using it in all the traditional ways like on a dolly, crane and drone. Although the amount of peripherals to make it actually work was astounding. You shouldn’t be surprised that is always the case when introducing a camera into a professional environment that requires more than just the operator to see the image. Something that video crews have been learning to accomplish since the Canon 5D.

Apple what is going on here?
Apple finally brings the specs to make their flagship mobile device a legitimate cinema camera for mobile filmmakers.
Canon has released RF mount Cine Primes.
Priced similarly as the Cooke SP3 lenses.
Again capitalizing on the shorter fl**ge depth of these mount they are packing a ton of features into these lenses and keeping the cost for professional lenses relatively low.
Canons dual pixel auto focus is arguably one of the best in the industry. It has to be only a matter of time that Canon adds servos to utilize that tech.
Canon’s new RF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses for the Cinema EOS System combine high optical performance for 4K and 8K shooting, cinema-style operability, and RF mount communications. And these are just the beginning.
I watched the Sony announcement and was a little surprised. Just a video that showed off their new camera. No press conference or anything like that. Ok cool. I just waited at the end for something else to happen then I noticed at the bottom of the screen there was a notification that the announcement ended 18sec ago lol.
The camera is a switchable full frame-S35 sensor 8KFF/6KS35 Venice style with PL and E mount, Dual ISO Electronic variable ND and some AI intuitive auto focus features when using Sony E mount lenses. Pretty interesting and super nice looking footage but that was to be expected. You can buy one now on B&H just add it to your cart it qualifies for free next day shipping at 25K.
