TLC September update

There has been a steady increase of families frequenting the pantry from January 1st through July 31st of this year, a total of 249 families more than the same time in 2021. Thankfully, along
with this increase is the continuing support off Willis churches, businesses, schools, and individuals. Usually, donations drop off during the summer months and pickup around the holidays; that is not the case this year, donations in food and funds have been consistent. One of the food drives in August was held during Vacation Bible School at the North Shore Church in Bentwood with a total of 178 pounds of non-perishables being donated to the TLC
pantry. They have planned another campaign in the fall to help with the increase of food needs during the holidays.
Many of our clients are single parent families, comprised of seniors, children, veterans, and there a few displaced individuals who request help. Our mission is to supplement monthly allotments of food stamps and help families finish the month with food on their tables. Some frequent the pantry on a weekly basis, some twice a month, and others once a month depending on their unique needs. Large size paper bags are filled with boxed, canned, and
packaged items, prepared before the pantry opens and shelves in the small receiving area are lined with produce, bread, pastries, water, and assorted drink products that can be selected and bagged by the clients themselves. The volunteers could not serve those individuals who find themselves in unexpected situations
of hardship if it wasn’t for help from those of you who support the TLC food Pantry with food and funds. Thank you all for your generosity. Donations can be delivered to the TLC physical location at 110 W. Montgomery St. Willis, (across from the Pizza Shack), Monday through Wednesday, 9am to 1pm or call 936-856-8317
on Wednesday during operating hours for possible appointments of delivery.

The pantry is open from Monday through Wednesday 10am-1pm for public distribution
of food.
TLC Food Pantry is a 501c3 public charity and donations are tax deductible.

To those of you who have been supporters of ours since the beginning we would like to kindly apologize for not being active these last few months and for not putting out our publication content.

It was brought to our attention the beginning of this year, that another local publishing company was using our company name, logo, website, etc., and redirecting site guests, readers, customers, potential clients, and followers to their site for monetary gain of their business. Our team of lawyers are handling the matter and have asked us not to put anything out until the situation is handled.

We look forward to getting the newspaper back out soon. Until matters are handled, we will only post local news and headlines on our page here.

Thanks again for your support! We hope to put out some new content soon.

Our friends from our local TLC Food Pantry recently shared some information with us and we would like to share it with you all, so our WISD children and families can receive the help needed for the upcoming summer months.

TLC April 2022 Update

Dear Reader,

Spring is here and the end of another school year is quickly approaching. The number of families that need assistance increases in the summer months and so does the need of food items that older children in the household can easily and safely prepare for themselves and younger siblings. (I am sure I say this every April).

For those of you who are interested in donating food and are wondering what is needed, the most requested food items are peanut butter, jelly, canned soups with flip top lids, crackers, single serve Jell-O and pudding cups, fruit cups, single serving microwave macaroni and cheese, pastas, shelf stable 8 oz. milk cartons, cereal, and single serve snacks packs. Fresh produce is picked up once a
week from the Montgomery County Food Bank with apples and bananas being the most requested and distributed fruit. These are foods that can fill a tummy of a child who may not have access to
regular meal programs during the summer months.

If you shop Kroger Marketplace in Willis, look for the Hunger bag display, there is usually peanut butter and jelly in the bags, purchase a bag, and drop in the red barrel on your way out at the north entrance across from the self- check registers. Also, single items purchased for the TLC Pantry can be dropped in the barrel.
Donations can be delivered to the TLC physical location at 110 W. Montgomery St. Willis, (across from the Pizza Shack), Monday through Wednesday, 9am to 1pm or call 936-856-8317 on
Wednesday during operating hours for possible appointments of delivery.

Thank you to all for your generosity and support of the TLC Food Pantry. TLC Food Pantry is a 501c3 public charity and all donations are tax deductible.

There are always going to be poor and needy people among you. Always be generous, open purse and hands, give to your neighbors in trouble. Deut 15:10,11 The Message

Take extra precaution tonight through tomorrow morning. Bring in and strap down anything that could potentially blow away.

Montgomery County is expecting a multifaceted weather event today, overnight and into tomorrow. Please remain weather aware for the next 36 hours.

Today we can expect thunderstorms to be widespread. Overnight a more defined line of storms ahead of a cold front will develop. This cold front is expected to be moving very slowly which increases our chances of isolated flooding.

Storms today could be severe. Potentially bringing hail, tornadoes and strong winds.

With the advancement of the cold front, storms will transition from the threat of severe to more heavy rain and increasing the flood threat.

As a result a flood watch has been issued for Montgomery County starting at 7pm tonight through 7 am tomorrow morning.

Overnight rains may cause low lying areas to flood and street flooding is possible. Check reports here and from trusted sources before going out in the morning hours. Remember to never drive in high water! Turn around don’t drown!

WILLIS ISD TRUSTEES CALL FOR $225M BOND REFERENDUM IN A MAY VOTE

Feb. 9, 2022 (Willis, TEXAS) - At the regular school board meeting Wednesday, Feb. 9, Willis ISD trustees unanimously called for a bond package to be presented to voters in May 2022. The bond is comprised of three propositions totaling $225,000,000. The bond carries a potential $0.05 tax rate increase if all three propositions are passed by voters. Proposition A includes elementary school #7, middle school #3, a fine arts addition at Lynn Lucas Middle School, upgrades to the WHS baseball and softball fields, playground
equipment upgrades at every elementary school (except newly opened Lagway Elementary) and future land purchases. Proposition A totals $143,045,000 and amounts to a 3.17 cent tax rate increase.
Proposition B is for a new football stadium and community room, to be built at a neutral site, totaling $62,565,000. Prop B would be a 1.39 cent tax rate increase. Proposition C would add a natatorium (aquatic center) to Willis ISD, something every other area district has for its students. The comprehensive natatorium would cost $19,390,000 and carry a 0.43 cent tax rate increase.
“As a board, we are proud to present this bond to our community,” said Cliff Williams, Board President. “We feel it touches all of our students in some form or fashion, immediately and into the future. Our board has made strong decisions over the last ten years that have allowed us to progress to where we are now. Our community and our schools are attracting new families to Willis. We as an educational entity have to be prepared with schools and
facilities, as well as the land they sit on, because the growth is coming. The steps we take today to improve our district will shape our community leaders of tomorrow. Election day is May 7, 2022

Monthly Update from our local TLC Food Pantry:

Dear Reader,

Last year, over 190,000 pounds of canned items, bread, pastries, dairy, and meat was distributed to 5260 individuals in the Willis community. The monthly food expenses dropped as the MCFB service fee on items per pound was waived, FEMA grants were applied to every order, and the USDA began issuing free boxes of produce, meats, dairy, and bread. Food and money donations given directly to the pantry from community churches, businesses, and individuals continued throughout the year increasing the ability to double the number of items per family. Also, special thanksgiving baskets made up of items for a holiday meal was doubled from the 75 families the previous year to 150 this past November. Many of our clients are single parent families, seniors, children, veterans, and a few homeless individuals. Our mission is to supplement monthly allotments of food stamps and help families finish the month with food on their tables. Some frequent the pantry on a weekly basis, some twice a month, and others once a month depending on their unique needs. Large size paper bags are filled with boxed, canned, and packaged items, prepared before the pantry opens and shelves in the small receiving area are lined with produce and bread products to be selected and bagged by the clients themselves.
We are able to accomplish our goal of helping those who find themselves in need of groceries because of the generosity of those who donate time, money, and food items and you are very much appreciated by the volunteers that serve families dependent on the TLC food pantry for groceries each month.

Thanks to all of you who support the TLC Food Pantry and for making Willis a caring community in which to live.

The pantry is open from Monday through Wednesday 10am-1pm (936)856-8317

Good morning to all, it has been brought to our attention from a few local business owners, that their businesses (Food/Truck Units) may be in jeopardy and might have to close their doors, due to amended permit coding from the City of Willis.

After months of being in business and getting their initial permits to open, permit codes are now being rewritten and changed with more stipulations, which in our eyes seems very unfair along with being unethical business practices. We are uncertain of all the details but would like your help in seeing to it that these local businesses do not close.

Both owners spoke with us and would like your help in voting against these new regulations. They are asking that our local residents and supporters show up to voice their concerns and opinions during the City of Willis council meeting next Tuesday, February 15th at 5:30PM.

Please share with our local residents, neighbors, friends, and local business owners and see to it that we are able to come together and support these local entrepreneurs.

We would like to hear your thoughts on this matter.

More details coming soon on how to help.

We bring you tragic news today from our local Willis PD.

This morning at about 8:20 am, officers were dispatched to a crash with injury at Holland and West Stewart. Then another call came in reporting a shooting in the same area. Upon arrival, officers saw a vehicle had crashed into a building there near the intersection, and a witness reported that the shooting suspect had run into a house in the 200 block of Holland. EMS responded to care for the individual in the car and officers went to the house. There they found the suspect, Sherman Griffin, 24, of Willis. Griffin was taken into custody and cooperated with investigators.

The driver of the car was identified as Keimauri Rogers, 17, of Willis. Rogers was pronounced dead at the scene.

Justice of the Peace Precinct 1Wayne Mack was notified and responded to the scene. He ordered the body to be removed by Eickenhorst Funeral Home to the Montgomery County
Forensic Center for autopsy. Personnel with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Unit and with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office responded to assist in the investigation. Based upon the evidence and information found, the assistant district attorney stated she would accept a charge of murder, and Griffin was transported to the county jail. The crime appears to be the culmination of an ongoing argument or dispute between the two young men.
