Today Frank Datta received the highest award! Frank was inducted into the Montana Newspaper Hall of Fame.
Here is the nomination letter sent to the Montana Newspaper Association.
I would like to nominate the former Editor of the Wibaux Pioneer Gazette, Frank Datta for Montana Newspaper Hall of Fame.
Frank Datta Stared his journey into the newspaper world in eighth grade and when he entered high school he worked on the annual as the assistant editor.
That is when he started working at the Wibaux Pioneer Gazette in 1955. For a time, Frank was known as “the Printer’s Devil.” However, he graduated from that status, and quickly learned the various aspects of the printing business.
In 1977 Frank became a partner in the Wibaux Pioneer Gazette with Frank Burke of Glendive. Then in 1985 was at the top of his game with eight awards in the Montana Press Association Better Newspaper Contest. He received three first place awards: Best Advertising Series; Feature Photo, and General News Photo.
Next, he won two second place awards: Spot News Photo, Best Sports Page. He also took three third place awards: Sport Photo, Community Service, and Best Ad Idea.
Frank didn’t stop there he went on to serve ten years on the Montana Newspaper Association’s board of directors and then on to President of MNA in 1988.
One of Datta’s proudest moments was received the Master Editor/Publisher award in 1995, where he proudly pointed out that “the paper never missed a publication since1907 even to this day.”
It wasn’t till December 31, 2001, when Frank purchased the Wibaux Pioneer Gazette from Frank Burke for one sliver dollar to become the sole owner of the paper. In that time, he juggled print jobs, billing, photographing home high school sporting events, Wibaux County Fair activities and town Centennial celebration.
He mastered transitioning from pasting up on paper to computer templates and emailing it to the Miles City printers. Frank put in 65 years being the eyes and ears of the newspaper.
Datta served as Wibaux County Disaster & Emergency Services Coordinator for 32 years. As part of that position December 30, 2014, he coordinated evacuating 27 Wibaux County Nursing Home residents to Glendive and Baker, plus a house-to-house welfare check when 900 Wibaux, Beach, Golva, and Sentinel Butte natural gas customers lost service.
Frank also set up Skywarn Weather Spotter classes through the Natural Weather Service office at Glasgow. He monitored weather conditions to keep tabs on any severe weather approaching Wibaux County.
Frank was elected Wibaux County Coroner for 20 years. He was a volunteer on the Wibaux County Volunteer Fire Department, plus the county ambulance crew.
The man of many hats was quite active in Wibaux County Chamber of Commerce to promote the community and keep its businesses from shrinking. Within this civic group, Frank promoted Superhost training, so Wibaux business staff put their best foot forward.
A man of faith, Datta was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church.
Patti Groroski of the Wibaux Extension office stated “He was a huge supporter of the Extension office, 4-H, and the Wibaux County Fair. Frank could be seen Saturday afternoons at the home football games crouching down on one knee capturing action shots.”
Sandy Knight worked for Frank for about 25 years and had this to say about him, “Frank was very dedicated to his newspaper, and he believed in supporting the community as well as shopping locally.”
When he died at age 79 from Covid-19 complications on October 7, 2021, Datta was working right up until he entered the hospital.
Frank was dedicated to the newspaper as well as his community and I believe he deserves to be in the Montana Newspaper Hall of fame.
