Stars paid tribute to Motorhead frontman Lemmy at his funeral at Forest Lawn Memorial Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA.
Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee, Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Slash from Guns N' Roses, Robert Trujillo and Lars Ulrich from Metallica, Judas Priest singer Rob Halford and Anthrax frontman Scott Ian, all spoke at the service.

Lemmy's bass guitar was plugged in to a stack of amplifiers and the volume turned up, with the congregation applauding as feedback from the speakers filled the chapel.

THIS DAY IN MUSIC Jan. 8, 2016
David Bowie released his 25th and final studio album Blackstar, coinciding with his 69th birthday and two days before his death.

It became his first and only album to reach #1 on the Billboard 200 album chart in the US. At the 59th Annual Grammy Awards, the album won awards for Best Alternative Music Album; Best Engineered Album; Best Recording Package, and the title single won Best Rock Performance, and Best Rock Song. The album was also awarded the British Album of the Year award at the 2017 Brit Awards.

The History of Our Station

The first license for 1540 AM WTXY was granted to original owner Greg Singletary of Waccamaw Broadcasting Company on November 17th 1978 with the original call letters WOOZ.

On Dec. 31st 1979 The station changed its call letters to WTXY.

In 1980 the radio station was sold to Tom Stanley of Stanley Broadcasting, Inc. who broadcasted to the Whiteville community and Columbus County until he sold it to Jeff Millikin of Millikin Broadcasting on March 14th 2007. The station was immediately put up for sale and was purchased by Rob Kendall as WTXY Radio, LLC on August 6, 2008.

On March 15th 2018 and application for an FM Frequency was filed and accepted by the FCC.

On July 16th 2018 the application for the FM Signal W280FO 103.9 was approved by the FCC allowing it to simulcast WTXY 1540 AM's daily programming with 24 Hour coverage.

On August 1st 2019 AudioTraxx Media Partners LLC entered into a Time Brokerage Agreement with WTXY Radio, LLC and they flipped the format to 80's & 90's Classic Hits as KOOL 103.9 FM.

On August 21st 2019 an application was submitted by AudioTraxx Media Partners LLC to purchase the station from WTXY LLC was accepted for filing by the FCC. FCC approved the transfer in early 2020.

While maintaining the original broadcast studios on Virgil Street, WTXY KOOL 103.9 FM Broadcasts from the KOOL storefront window studios located at 1017 S. Madison street in Whiteville.

New studio upgrades are in the works, and we are focusing on getting our FM Antenna on a higher tower to cover a wider broadcast area for our listeners. This upgrade will require FCC approval as well.
