Richard Sullivan has been hired by Wadsworth High School as an assistant principal following two open positions being left at the end of the 2023-2024 school year.

Sullivan will be the Freshmen Unit Principal for WHS. He spent his first 11 years in education with the Ravenna School District. For nine years he was a social studies teacher at Ravenna High School, and for two years he was an assistant principal at Brown Middle School.

These students spend so much time planning, organizing, scheduling, debating, researching, photographing, writing, and editing every month to ensure this paper continuously comes out. Be Kind Wadsworth held their final meeting of the school year on Thursday, May 23, from 4-5 pm in the Wadsworth High School media center. They discussed many topics surrounding what is to come for the group. Some subjects of conversation included money raised for charity, preparation for summer events such as the Blue Tip Parade, and the calendar for the 2024-2025 season. The city of Wadsworth began recent construction about two weeks ago at Durling Park involving the renewal of the athletic courts and is planned to end on June 28.

“The purpose of the Durling Park Improvement Program is to, at this phase, improve upon and really reconstruct the tennis courts as well as the pickleball courts,” said Matt Hiscock, Wadsworth’s Public Safety Director.

AI, artificial intelligence, has been seen as an upcoming issue by many. However, for artists, AI has already become a major problem. AI-generated art has erupted throughout social media along with AI-generated speed paints. Artists all over social media are furious, especially with some posing to be artists with AI.

“AI art may be pretty cool, I’ll admit, but it’s not amazing,” Ansley Moore, a Wadsworth High School freshman. “AI is just doing what it’s told to. There is no true emotion, it is like if I were to make chocolate chip cookies, but without the chocolate chips.”

Lincoln Elementary will be closed tomorrow, Thursday, May 23, due to complications with the air conditioning system. The heat caused by these conditions poses health threats to the students of Lincoln Elementary and must be handled before school can safely resume again. Megan Harvey was appointed the new director of Main Street Wadsworth. Harvey will supervise events, collaborations, and advertising, as of the end of April.

Harvey served on staff at the Akron Civic Theater in many capacities, most recently as the development manager. Her five-plus years in the role prepared her for this new position in Wadsworth.

Samuel Piehl, Wadsworth Jazz Band director and middle school band director, has been named the 2024 Wadsworth High School teacher of the year.
After this school year, Piehl is moving to Las Vegas, Nevada to support his wife’s career.
“I’ll miss the goofy times with the students where we get to share stories or make memories, those moments are the most important to me,” Piehl said.

Mary Beth Baxley, Wadsworth High School's Math teacher and drama director, is retiring after teaching for 31 years.

“I’ll really miss the math department, I mean we are just, it gets me choked up a little bit, cause it’s nice to see them daily. We’re not just colleagues, I feel like our department is really close and we’re friends too so I’ll miss them. I’ll miss the whole school, we are so lucky in Wadsworth, we have such a great school system, and I’m proud to have been a part of that,” Baxley said.

Amelia Milano, a junior at Wadsworth High School, placed eighth at the United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) Eastern National Championships on May 5.
“I cannot think of anyone more deserving of having that moment,” said Amy Alexander, Milano’s coach at Pinnacle Gymnastics. “She has overcome so many obstacles over the years, and has persevered while being an exceptional role model to all of the gymnasts in our program.”

Advanced Placement classes have been on an overall decline in Wadsworth and surrounding areas. In Wadsworth alone, AP classes are being cut as students tend to gravitate more toward College Credit Plus, CCP, classes.
One of the main reasons that the interest in AP classes has declined is due to the option of FlexPasses in only the CCP route. FlexPass allows students to leave school during days when the college-level courses are not in session.
