St. Médard's Day

Saturday June 8th is St. Médard's Day. There is an old belief among Cajuns that if it rains on June 8th, Saint Medard's Day, it will rain for forty days. There are several sayings and rhymes about this belief:

“Should St Médard's day be wet, it will rain for forty yet.”

The old French rhyme is: “Quand il pleut à la Saint-Médard, il pleut quarante jours plus tard” (If it rains on St Médard's Day, it rains for forty days more).

Saint Médard was a sixth century French Catholic bishop. As a child, St Médard was said to have once been sheltered from rain by an eagle which hovered over him. This is how he was most commonly depicted, and is why he is associated with weather, good or bad, and why he is held to protect those who work in the open air.
This belief among Cajuns is analogous to the weather forecasting beliefs about Saint Swithin's Day (July 15) in England. This is certainly still known in south Louisiana as well as near New Orleans. A few years ago, a television weather reporter in Lafayette presented a version of the weather prognostication beliefs associated with June 8th but instead of relating those beliefs to a saint's legend, he gave the spelling as "Samidar," a phonetic spelling of the French pronunciation of Saint Médard.
