9:15 pm - Thunderstorms have blossomed over the Omaha metro within the past half hour. These are not severe, and any additional severe weather chances look low. A stronger storm could produce some small hail or gusty winds.

However, these storms are following one after the other, like trains on a track. With these storms producing very heavy rain over an area that saw 2-4" of rain this morning, there is concern for some flash flooding in the Omaha metro depending on how long these storms stick around.

One thing these storms near the Missouri River are not lacking...its lightning.

8:30 pm - We still have a line of strong storms over southeast Nebraska into southwest Iowa and northwest Missouri. This line could produce some 40-50 mph winds, heavy rain, and tons of lightning as it moves east. This is where our greatest risk for severe weather is for the short term.

For Omaha and the rest of the region, the showers that passed by earlier this evening has sapped the atmosphere of a lot of its energy for storms this evening. So while we have spotty storms to the west of Omaha, they are struggling and are unlikely to become severe in the near-future.

That is not to say the severe weather threat is over for Omaha and surrounding areas, but the threat is lower. Still some storms possible for the next few hours, and a severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 1 am.

7:20 pm - Here is where things stand right now, and where the severe threat could be in the next couple hours.

We have a cluster of severe storms moving over southeast Nebraska. These storms could carry a damaging wind risk as they head for Nebraska City, Tecumseh, and Auburn. These storms should stay south of the Omaha metro, as they move into southwest Iowa.

The main concern for Omaha and surrounding are the showers that are developing south of Columbus. IF these showers can grow into thunderstorms, at this point it is somewhat uncertain, they could carry a severe threat into Omaha by 9 pm. We will know more within the hour.

Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 1 am, so stay updated with us this evening!

5:55 pm - The storm in eastern Saunders County is beginning to intensify a bit further. Not up to severe levels (doubt it is even producing hail), but it will bring some heavy rain and lightning to the Omaha metro over the next hour.

5:18 pm - Watching some showers near Seward move toward the metro. These are not severe, only just producing a few lightning strikes.

They are moving into an environment favorable for them to strengthen, but some limiting factors may keep their intensity down. It's a waiting game at this point.

Any chance for severe weather does not come until after 7 pm, mostly along and south of I-80 this evening.

Happy Tuesday! Tomorrow could be busy with the possibility of two rounds of thunderstorms. Let's break it down:

We stay dry until around 2 am, then we start watching two areas for storms. A cluster of storms moving in from central Nebraska, and an arc of storms that form ahead of it. It is unclear where exactly this arc of storms forms, but current indications have it developing close to the Omaha metro into southwest Iowa.

These storms last through the AM commute, ending by 10 am. The severe weather threat is low, but we cannot rule out some large hail/gusty winds from a few storms. A bigger concern is flooding, particularly wherever that band of storms sets up.

After the storms die down, a boundary will divide the viewing area roughly along I-80, but this can vary. To the north, it will be cloudy and cooler with highs in the upper 70s. To the south, we could see some sunshine with highs in the upper 80s. It will be in the southern section of the viewing area where the fuel arrives for round 2.

After 7 pm, scattered thunderstorms will develop along/south of I-80. These could carry a severe threat with large hail, damaging winds, and perhaps a tornado. They start off isolated but form into a cluster as they roll into northwest Missouri. The severe threat ends before midnight.

The southern section of the line from Seward to Milligan is severe with 60 mph winds and 1" hail possible. This line will head toward the Lincoln area, arriving by 5 pm.

The northern section of the line over Butler County is still sub-severe, but could strengthen as it heads east. This section of the line is what's going to hit Omaha.

Happy Wednesday! Here is the latest on the chance for strong storms this evening.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect for the Omaha metro and points west until 10 pm.

A line of strong storms are located along the US-81 corridor as of 4 pm and moving eastward. These storms have a history of producing winds up to 50 mph, and severe thunderstorm warnings are in effect south of Columbus. As they continue east, they will encounter an unstable environment which would allow them to strengthen.

The ETA is listed below with the Omaha metro around the 6 pm timeframe. The main threats from these storms are damaging winds upward of 70 mph, and pockets of large hail. The tornado threat is low.

It is also becoming apparent that the severe weather threat is shifting its focus more along and south of I-80. Cloud cover over northeastern Nebraska has left the atmosphere stable, and the severe threat is much lower.

12:30 am - Couple of quick updates regarding the severe threat overnight.

There is a Severe Thunderstorm Watch in effect for Omaha and points north until 7 am, although our severe threat will likely be over before then.

One storm is going up northeast of Columbus. It has a lot of energy to work with if it can tap into it correctly. This storm is moving east and there could be others that may try to form soon. Main threats with any storms this morning is large hail and damaging winds.

Good afternoon and happy Tuesday! A couple of weather notes to be aware of this afternoon.

Due to a boundary left over from the storms over Iowa this morning, this has kept our temperatures and humidity in check. Temperatures range from the mid-90s in Beatrice to the low-80s in Omaha. Expect southeast Nebraska to be very hot and humid, with Omaha and western Iowa experiencing more manageable heat.

The other thing to watch this evening is the chance of some strong storms. I want to preface this by saying that the chance any storms form is low, this is a big IF scenario. However, if storms do form, they could be quite strong with damaging winds the main risk. Because of the threat, a level 3/5 severe risk is in effect for the northern half of the area. Something to watch this evening, and if we see any development I will keep everyone updated.

UPDATE: The tornado that hit Elkhorn, Bennington, and Blair on April 26 has been upgraded from an EF-3 to an EF-4 tornado with winds up to 170 mph.

This was based on a reevaluation of the damage to several homes in Elkhorn and one south of Blair.

In the overall grand scheme, it't not a major change as it does not determine any relief funding or help those impacted. However, ensuring accurate tornado data is important scientifically as it helps out future research on tornadoes and how to prevent the worst damage.

See more details here:

Three months after the Arbor Day Tornado Outbreak of April 26, 2024, new data suggests the tornado that hit Elkhorn was an EF-4 with winds up to 170 mph. Previously, it was an EF-3 with 165 mph winds.

APRIL 26 EKLHORN UPDATE: In the past few days, the National Weather Service in Omaha has revised new info from the Elkhorn tornado from April 26.

Based on this information, there is a possibility that the tornado will be upgraded to an EF-4 tornado with winds of 170 mph. Currently, it's rated an EF-3 with 165 mph winds.

We will officially know if this change occurred on Monday.
