We just wrapped up an incredible ride to Stanley! A huge shoutout to Todd Miller for being our amazing Road Captain and leading the way. 🙌

We made a delicious stop at Papa Brunee’s in Stanley for some pizza, and later, we indulged in ice cream at the Shoshone Snack Bar to end the ride and say our goodbyes. 🍕🍦

The weather this morning started off a little chilly, but it turned into a beautiful day. And luckily, the smoke wasn’t too bad in Stanley. We had an awesome turnout with 13 bikes and 14 participants. Thanks to everyone who joined – it was a ride to remember! 🏍️🌟

MAGIC VALLEY HOG
HELLS CANYON/RATTLESNAKE RUN
JULY 19-20

OUR LAST OVERNIGHT FORAY THIS SUMMER started with 7 bikes and 8 HOG members leaving Snake HD at 0800. The ride changed from 3 to 2 days due to wildfires in several locations along the original route. Riding Hells Canyon with multiple scenic vistas is a favorite and a repeat ride, never disappointing. This year, a bonus is the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is on Harley Davidson's 10 for 24 list. All were able to check that goal off the list. Our planned first day traveled well known two lane roads through a Glens Ferry, Hammett, Bruneau, and into Homedale. Idaho Pizza, our now usual lunch stop, once again fed all. I ordered a chicken sandwich, very good and a nice change from the pizza buffett. We motored through western Idaho farming communities with green fields of sugar beets, onions, and hops on either side of the road. At Cambridge, all re-hydrated. Temperatures were above 100 at that point and topped 107 through beautiful Hells Canyon. The heat required a couple extra stops, and all soaked cooling vests or shirts at Scotty's store. As we climbed out of the canyon, temps dropped into the mid to high 90s, thankfully. The ponderosa motel housed all of us. I chose a local parking lot food stand, the range rider cafe the dinner choice for everyone else. Day two started at 0600, heat a determing factor. We split into three groups, the Matlocks choosing the original 3 day route up rattlsnake through lolo pass and home. The Nickels, with Mark Stonebreaker, and Todd Miller, rode eastern and central Oregon. Rich Hall and myself busted the freeway to Vista House, and old Highway 30, Oregon's 50 rides one nation road, then to Bend, and home on US 20. First and foremost, safety in the heat became the priority with Byron recognizing the requirements of everyone in the group. Second, Mark Stonbreaker is a great addition to the overnight rides. Third and lastly, thank you Louiza got babysitting Willie G Snake. Unfortunately, due to unforseen circumstances, the remainder of our overnight planned rides have been cancelled as OFFICIAL CLOSED HOG RIDES. Several members plan on completing the rides as NON-HOG SPONSORED EVENTS, so if your motel rooms are in place, and you wish to complete the rides, tie in with other members. 🎉🐻 Today, our chapter members came together for a special cause during our Teddy Bear Run! 🏍️ We gathered teddy bears to donate to first responders, ensuring that children involved in crashes or other traumatic circumstances have a comforting companion during tough times. ❤️

A HUGE thank you to Jennifer Matlock for being our awesome road captain and leading us safely on this journey. 🙌 And a big shoutout to Jessica and Lance Fenton for hosting our picnic – your hospitality made this event even more memorable! 🧺🍔

We are also immensely grateful to the Twin Falls County Sherriff’s Office for sending out deputies to pick up the bears. 🚔 Your support and dedication to our community make a significant difference. 🧸👮‍♂️

Our pop up ride to Mt Harrison was met with an unexpected twist – the road was still closed due to snow. ❄️ Despite the detour, we had an incredible ride and enjoyed lunch at Tank Hill Pizza Cafe in Albion. 🍕 It was fantastic to share the experience with such a great group. MAGIC VALLEY HOG
HOG RIDE HOME/MILWAUKEE HD MUSEUM/BLACK HILLS RIDE
JUNE 25TH, DAY #5

THEY SAY A PICTURE is worth a thousand words, in this case a thousand plus raindrops. Thick clouds blocked normally early sunshine through motel windows, foretelling a wet departure. The weather radar showed some yellow and even patches of orange, indicators of rainfall amounts. Our saving grace, the storm front moved to the east and south. Still light rain greeted everyone when packing luggage on bikes, the now very normal and well practiced routine. I was the only rider not to suit up (put on raingear), chancing wetness, and counting on the timer from the radar map. Time proved out my choice, with wet roads, but little in the way of moisture. The humidity did create low hanging fog, the sun not able to overcome the humidity. Unfortunately, a typical nemesis, especially in larger cities, neverending road construction hampered our northward path out of Milwaukee. The city am rush-hour traffic and road construction, lasted through the first 15-20 miles. Our ride northward was planned to cover Door County, the 50 rides 1 Nation road for the state of Wisconsin. Door County's claim to fame, beauty, lake Michigan, whitefish, cherries, rolling farmland, with highly sought after vacation property. The area legend includes the wealthy criminal element in Chicago used Door County as a summer getaway due to the bearable temperatures and recreation opportunities. Several old very large hotel properties still exist, although re-purposed ( please see photos by luiza nickels). Once we cleared Milwaukee traffic, lighter peninsula traffic allowed for more sightseeing. The road up the east side of the peninsula, our route northward, parallels lake Michigan. Although the road extends beyond Sister Bay, that small village, for the most part, is the terminus of the road. Al Johnson's Swedish Restaurant is a tourist favorite, and their sign, the photo point we are required to show Harley Davidson as proof of the ride completion. The place was PACKED. We had called ahead, with seating within 15 minutes of arrival. Per the maitre d, the eatery serves 1500 to 2000 daily. The facility sports a TRUE grass roof, and under the right conditions, herds goats onto the roof to graze. Alas, no goats on the roof on our visit, with temperatures too high for the goats, and a very soggy roof from rain the night before. The food equaled the excellent reviews, especially the cherry and pecan bread pudding, serving size large enough for three. Our plan to ride the west side of the peninsula south, was scuttled by, yup, road construction. We stopped at the Green Bay HD dealership. Unknown to us, the Green Bay shop and the Wausau shop have the same owners. Most shops now sell a shop specific challenge coin. These two shops use the same coin, with one shop featured on one side and the Sister shop featured on the other. In Green Bay a flyer, stamped by the staff, if produced at the shop in Wausau, netted a FREE challenge coin. Of course, we couldn't pass up on FREE STUFF. Timeframes were a but tight, but we made the Wausau dealership with a few minutes to spare before the doors were locked. The staff accommodated those wishing to purchase dealer specific shirts/items. Everyone exited the dealership with at least one chotsky. The motel had a lounge with a grill. Arranging tables created space for the entire crew, a rarity due to our numbers. The trip finished day 5, our halfway point. Tomorrow is a make miles day and the third and last 500 mile day on this journey. Cole (burn another tank, or Doc) Johnson.

MAGIC VALLEY HOG
HOG RIDE HOME/MILWAUKEE MUSEUM/BLACK HILLS RIDE
JUNE 24TH DAY #4

NONE OF THE GROUP CAN DENY I was a bit anxious and edgy this morning. Although several goals were set with the inception of this run, one of the most important, if not THE most important, the museum tour scheduled to begin at 1100 this morning. We needed to cover the remaining 152 miles to the museum in a timely manner. KSU time, this am at 0715. No discouraging words were uttered, and we indeed thundered out of the motel parking lot just before the aforementioned time. The road, a four lane divided highway, with abundant sunshine, eased my anxiety. The miles melted away quickly until heavy traffic with city congestion in Madison impeded our progress. We relinquished minutes confirming the wisdom of an early start. Road construction hampered our timing as well, as did missing turns into the Milwaukee HD Museum, by the road captain....me. Jennifer Matlock couldn't navigate a much too quick turn by the ROAD CAPTAIN....ME, but we all cruised into the bike parking area with 30 minutes to spare, confirming our early departure once again. Lynda Fletcher, the tour coordinator, with security, blocked off parking directly in front of the museum, especially for Magic Valley HOG (please view all the pictures). The chapter was also feted in the display case (again please see photos). The size of our group required two tour guides. Our group guide, Shelby, related the history of the company. Forgive me, but I don't recall the name of the second tour guide. A highlight, of course, was all the archived material, especially the racks and racks of motorcycles, stacked three high and row upon row. Bill, one of the the archivist/historians, detailed how the collection is managed, both collecting, storing, and preserving not only motorcycles, but historical documents. The building and display cases are climate controlled, some display cases individually climate controlled, with back up power systems designed for removal of all artifacts in case of any emergency, power outage, fire etc. Many of the fragile films, documents etc. are stored in a on site freezer, incredible. As you can see, Willie G enjoyed the tour. A special VIP challenge coin along with a museum pin were gifted to each participant. Our meal, initially planned with four tables, due to the efforts of a couple of our members ( I think Melissa Miller had a hand in the changes, but others may also gave been involved) re-arranged seating outside with all at the same table. An unexpected highlight, the sighting of the LEGENDARY MAN HIMSELF, WILLIE G. DAVIDSON, with family members, was eating in the Cafe. The picture in the photo array was taken by Jessica Fenton. A HOG challenge coin was presented to the family, thanks to Byron Nickels. All I can say is WOW. The trip continues daily with amazing scenery, riding, and friendship, but today crowned the trip. Today fulfilled bucket list dreams. Tomorrow, Door County, Al's Swedish Restaurant, with goats grazing on the roof, and pointing westward. Cole (burn another tank, or Doc) Johnson.

HOG RIDE HOME/MUSEUM/BLACK HILLS RIDE
JUNE 23RD DAY #3

The beauty of the scenic Sandhills Byway yesterday will be hard to top. Today is more or less a "make miles day" with a goal of closing the gap between our current location and the Harley Davidson Museum, the day four destination. VIP tour tickets require our arrival before 11am on Monday. The time frame requires we have no more than 125 to 150 miles travel distance Monday morning. Our planned overnight chosen location, Platteville WI, 150 miles from th museum, and just over 500 miles from Grand Island NE. KSU at 0730 bothered no one, the day's forecast very favorable. Jessica and Lance Fenton motored out earlier, meeting their son in Lincoln. The early hours, before noon, blasted by. Freeway travel is not usually scenic, although the greenery due to recent rains was eye pleasing. Our group stayed tight, even with fairly heavy truck traffic. Communication with the CBs informed everyone, avoiding potential hazards, mostly impatient cagers, cutting the pack. Most think of the Midwest as FLAT, but rolling hills covered with crops or second growth deciduous canopy, and scattered farms, old barns, and corn graineries were the rule after leaving Omaha and into Iowa. The route, almost all two lane roads, cut through small very rural towns, with populations in the low 3 digit range, and wound around the countryside. Larry Nickels called in advance while on the road arranging lunch in Denison IA at the self proclaimed oldest active restaurant in IA, Cronks. We were earlier than anticipated, with the staff changing from their breakfast to the lunch buffet. The buffet sported a distinct Mexican theme, good and filling. Oh, our first feul stop happened to be next to a suspect business, please see the attached photo. Back to Cronks, Willie G made an appearance, but with no mice or other small critters on the menu, he just suffered through a few photos before returning to the shade of Kelly Lee's trike trunk, his chosen den location. As is usual, an occasional blip pops up, this one belonging to me. An adjustment in our scheduling, was intended to remove a stop from the schedule. Unfortunately, I didn't remove that stop in my GPS NAV system. The crew followed me around a serpentine route, finally getting back on the intended track. I only suffered a small amount of good natured ribbing. To date total mileage just over 1600 miles, no complaints, all smiles. Tomorrow, the iconic Harley Davidson Museum, with lunch at the Motor Cafe. The 1600 miles is the most several of our HOG members have ridden in three days, accolades to all. MAGIC VALLEY HOG
HOG RIDE HOME/MILWAUKEE MUSEUM/BLACK HILLS RIDE
JUNE 22ND DAY #2

RESTED, FED and ready to tackle another day, MV HOG rolled out of the Best Western parking lot right on time, 0730. No signs of a repeat performance of yesterday's challenging weather conditions in the forecast, and sunlight to the horizon, the Sandhills Scenic Byway our goal for the day. This very unique geologic feature, I believe, is the largest covered sand dunes in the US. Think rolling grass covered hills, but underneath, nothing but sand. This area feeds the Ogallala aquifer, vital underground water supply in a three state area. The water table lies only a few feet below the dunes, visible in the many small ponds, potholes, and small lakes along the entire route. With little imagination, one can easily visualize the vast herds of buffalo roaming these marvelous hills. This is Harley Davidson's designated 50 rides one nation road with many of the group documenting the ride through the motor company by submitting a photo with the scenic byway sign included in the picture. Check another lifetime ride challenge off the list. Abundant sun, no wind, great two lane road with very little traffic guaranteed a great day. Kurt Harris joined the crew after riding through heavier weather than our day yesterday. We are complete now with 16 bikes and 20 riders. Temperatures didn't break 80 in the first 250 miles, but 75 degree averages allowed everyone to strip leather for lighter attire. Our cold blooded mascot, Willie G Snake finally emerged from Kelly Lee's trunk, the sun warming his cold blooded scales. He couldn't resist making an appearance at our lunch stop, the Highway 2 Depot in Mullen NE. A couple of calls in the weeks prior to our arrival ensured the kitchen could accomodate our numbers. Not only were they ready, the food was hearty with quick service. A welcoming sign greeted us, and provided an excellent photo op for Willie G. A big MV HOG thankyou, and also thanks for the post on YOUR page. If you travel through this area, I recommend a stop. They are easily found right off route 2. Can't throw out enough accolades toward my riding companions. What a great group!! Makes all the planning worthwhile. Also personally, I need to thank all those with a hand in washing my bike!!! She looks like new. Tomorrow's weather looks wonderful. 500 miles await. Day three is a make miles day, with day four culminating in our much anticipated Harley Davidson Museum tour. More tomorrow. Cole (burn another tank or Doc) Johnson.

HOG RIDE HOME/MILWAUKEE MUSEUM/BLACK HILLS
DAY #1

ANTICIPATION ended this am at 0730 with 15 bikes and 19 eager riders. To our chagrin, Tom Wood canceled, a medical issue the reason. Kurt Harris, also waylaid, planned to meet us in Laramie. Sunshine always raises spirits, today no exception, with morning temps a pleasant 56 degrees. The size of the group, for safety, split into two. Traveling over Conner Creek summit never ages, with great scenery. Our first stop in Snowville, was chaos. We encountered a group of patriot riders, approximately 200, es**rting a fallen veteran to his final rest. Hearsay from one of our riders placed the starting location in Alaska. If so, the es**rt had already traveled over 3000 miles, and although I don't recall the final destination, seems the end was another 1500 plus distance. The remaining miles today were all freeway, although Ogden canyon allowed use of our sidewalls in the sweepers. The best laid plans cannot control all variables, with the weather always the great unknown. Towering thunder cells darkened our eastward path. After lunch in Evanston, fast food due to the size of the crew, I thought we MAY have dodged inclement weather, NOT. Rain eventually greeted the group about 60 miles out of Rawlins. The rest stop had little cover, but we shared the available space. Any meteorologist knows a towering thundercell not only produces moisture, but also wind, in this case tropical storm speed wind in the 40-60 mile an hour range. The wind from a thundercell spills out in all directions, blowing from the cell toward you. The height of the cell determines the coldness of the precipitation. Let's just say the cells had to be 40-50 thousand feet in height, because the moisture included HAIL. Sixty miles of rain, hail, and 50 mile an hour wind put us in Rawlins. We refueled rapidly, beating the next oncoming cell, and although the wind continued pushing the bikes out of our normal wheel tracks, we remained dry. The day ended just before 7 pm. Day one, 570 miles. I didn't hear a single sour word. Tomorrow, the Sand Hills Scenic Byway, one of my brother's favorites. Cole (burn another tank or Doc)Johnson.

MAGIC VALLEY HOG
HIGHWAY 50/LONLIEST ROAD IN AMERICA
DAY #2

With 491 miles on the tires DAY #1, and 150 miles less on the schedule day #2, the decision was for a later start on day #2 with KSU from the local Maverick planned for 0800. As the saying goes, plans are made to be changed. All internal clocks were set on MDT. I ended up the late arrival at the gas pumps at 0720, so, with everyone fueled and fed, we put Battle Mountain in the rear view mirrors by 0730. Although freeway miles are not a favorite, 4 lanes remain necessary, this morning no exception. Cognisant of Harley Davidson's ride challenges, we added a short stop in Gold Rush HD's parking lot, for dealership photos. The rumble from 14 bikes initiated the security system. Larry Nickels contacted TJ Woodhall, avoiding a visit by the local constabulary. Personal morning fluids required elimination, the Maverick on NV 225 the stop prior to riding north. Our fears of slick roads were realized, a large caution billboard warning of hazardous roads. Red stained, slick roads made travel hazardous over the next 30 miles. The crickets were EVERYWHERE. Safe speed less than 35-45 miles an hour put us behind schedule, and although occasional cricket crossing cropped up after the 30 miles, travel at normal speed limits improved everyone's spirits. The twists and sweepers around Wildhorse Reservoir burned a bit of rubber off sidewalls. Bruneau One Stop, even though we arrived 30 minutes later than anticipated, served up tasty grub fast. A second benefit, as we dropped off the high plains plateau into the Snake River plain, temperatures increased from 50 to 63. ID 51 led to ID 78, then into Bliss on old US 30. I did not fuel up in Owyhee, a mistake I won't make again as my remaining miles on the computer dropped to 14. Goodbyes in Bliss ended a GREAT day and FANTASTIC weekend. As mentioned in the prior post, MV HOG continues expanding with excellent riders, and as important, excellent people. Loved the ride, loved the company. CU ON the next one. MAGIC VALLEY HOG
HIGHWAY 50/LONELIEST ROAD IN AMERICA RIDE
DAY #1

The kickoff today began at 0730 from SNAKE HD with 11 bikes and 13 HOG members. The sun was a blessing, with the temperatures around 55 degrees at KSU. We bolstered our numbers by 3 with Todd Miller, Paul Andrews-Davis, and Tom Wood joining the pack in Rogerson. As usual, mornings are much colder in Jackpot through the Salmon Falls Creek drainage dropping to 41 before making 55 again in Wells NV. I love the continued growth of MV HOG. Two or three years ago a 2 day ride may have garnered 7-8 participants, today we totaled 14 bikes and 16 members. The route, the infamous Lonliest Road in America. I know I mentioned this two lane treasure in the past, given that moniker by LOOK magazine, but the rag was actually LIFE magazine. At any rate, this road often makes top ten must do motorcycles road lists. Also, this road is on Harley Davidson's 10 for 24 ride list. We braved the impatient traffic on US 93 from Twin Falls to Wells with little trouble, the early start thinning the traffic a bit. We pack made a couple of adjustments, read holes, when passing cages couldn't judge speed and distance well. The level of competence in this bunch makes the road captain job smooth. Our breaks were lengthened with no complaints, more than 100 miles between stops. We located the requisite photo point sign just south of our Ely gas stop. Rayne Matlock acted as official photographer, with the entire crew lined up single file for photos. Check that 10 for 24 ride off the list. As expected, traffic thinned out on the Lonliest Road. The Owl Club in Eureka was very accommodating and prepared. Most everyone got food fairly quickly, Gary Matlock NOT INCLUDED, his wait a bit longer. After a fuel and butt break at Champs in Austin, we pointed north up NV 305 to Battle Mountain. The mormon cricket infestation easily visible by stretches of red pavement, from crushed cricket goo on the road, slowing a must as the goo makes the road a bit slick in spots. The smell gagged everyone. We found the Super 8 motel by 1645. The day included a temperature swing of 42 degrees with a high temp of 83. The Owl Club in Battle Mountain (yes another Owl Club) served an excellent evening meal, and again, with a cal in advance, had a table for all 16 of us. Great day with tomorrow supposed to be cooler, also most likely will encounter crickets. Tomorrow's route, Elko to Owyhee, and home. Cole (burn another tank or Doc) Johnson.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING
MAY 16TH

So, i didn't take any pictures, enjoy the GIF. Our numbers continue to grow in a very exciting way. Our attendance was over 32 (didn't get an exact head count) but did count at least 32 people. Kudos to our Ladies of Harley sponsoring our progressive dinner ride. Larry Nickels and Trebor Evans discussed an upcoming Navigation Academy, a chance to use the HD app, the navigations systems on the bikes and cell phones to track our ride routes. All the ride flyers are now posted on the HD app. the routes are downloadable on to cell phones and the bike navigation systems (Iphones with androids to follow). Two highlights this meeting, a HOG member from Australia by happenstance was at Guppies during our meeting. Nice to meet fellow HOG members and realize the global nature of Harley Owners Group. Byron presented him with one of our personalized challenge coins. Second highlight, Byron presented Jessica Fenton with a custom patch commemorating her survival on the Devil's Highway U.S. 191. We also got up close and personal with her new ride. Kelly Lee won the 50/50 raffle, but Willie G remains with Kurt Harris. Need to allow Kelly to educate Willie G this month. We welcomed new faces as well, Brian Homan,Marvin Heilesen, both new members. Woody Swick tried us out for a second month, thankyou, and Marcy Lee joined us on the back of her father's ride. Mayson Elison, my nephew, also joined us. He hopes to get his motorcycle endorsement in a week or two and join us as a rider. Approximately 16 raised hands, indicating their presence for the upcoming Highway 50 ride this weekend, and a reminder for the upcoming QRU fundraiser on June 2nd, always a favorite activity of Magic Valley HOG was discussed. Jeff McClure will lead the Heart of Idaho Day ride on June 9th. So pick your ride/activity, with many to choose from before our June meeting at Denny's in Burley. Great meeting, great people, and Guppies was a great venue. Cole (burn another tank or Doc) Johnson.

HIGHWAY 50 RIDE
MAGIC VALLEY HOG
MAY 18-19
KSU SNAKE HD
0730

Join us on our second over night ride, the Lonliest Road in America, named by Look Magazine in the 50's. The article cautioned motorists to "be prepared for anything", including breakdowns with no help. This road traditionally makes many must ride motorcycle lists. This year the road is included in Harley Davidson's 10 for 24 ride list. We will cross several small mountain ranges and both Eureka an Austin Nevada. Total mileage just under 850. CU Saturday. Cole
