The Women of Roswell & New Manchester, Georgia

It’s not a commonly known event in the War that Confederate civilians, primarily women and children, were deported to the US by General Sherman in the summer of 1864. Sherman is on record as desiring the deportation and/or extermination of Confederates.

There were factories in the Confederacy, just not as many as were in the United States. The mills at Roswell and New Manchester engaged in the production of Confederate uniforms. With most of the men away in the Confederate Army, there were primarily women and children and a few old men present.

In July of 1864, the US military arrived in these towns, cavalry units. The workers were rounded up and held in the town square, Sherman’s orders were they were to be sent to the US. The mills were burned and much of the town and homes burned as well.

Various accounts record the women were subjected to insults and abuse, and r**e. Some of the officers finally stationed the bulk of their men to camp a mile away that night. One Union soldier’s letter records: "We always felt that we had a perfect right to appropriate to our own use anything we needed for our comfort and convenience."

The total number of women deported was between 400 and 500. The women were transported north and arrived in Louisville. They were to be sent north of the Ohio River. A New York newspaper account recorded: "It is hardly conceivable that an officer bearing a United States commission of Major General should have so far forgotten the commonest dictates of decency and humanity...as to drive four hundred penniless girls hundreds of miles away from their homes and friends to seek their livelihood amid strange and hostile people.”

These women were kept prisoner, some died of disease and starvation, but for the most part we don’t know exactly what happened to many of them as most were never heard from again. There is a book out with some research into some of them.

The men returning home found their towns and homes destroyed and their women missing. Most would not have had the funds to pursue extensive searches, especially in the late 1860’s. Communication was limited in a devastated and military occupied land, there was no telephone and no internet. There are a handful of men who were able to locate their wives and families and bring them home, for the most part this was not the case.
