Williams & Mary’s football program would have difficulty having a captain that fit one of their offensive mottos better than Hollis Mathis. Effort, Adaptability and Toughness (EAT) is one of The Tribe’s mantras for this season. There may not be many athletes across college football as adaptable as Hollis, a sixth-year senior who saw his role shift throughout his career.

“They’ve handled it well,” coach Ray Ager said. “We’ve been competing. There have been times when we made mistakes that caused us to mentally shut down. I’m not saying the teams that we have played so far aren’t good, but we’ve beat ourselves a lot.”

Ray Ager wants to see the Penn Hills girls volleyball team learn to weather the storm. When the skies opened up during the Indians’ first four matches, they hadn’t found a way to battle their way to shelter.

According to county records, Gia Visto is one of six restaurants this year cited for serving food without a permit and the only one in Penn Hills. Universal Pizza, another eatery in town, was briefly subjected to a consumer alert last month for poor temperature control and cleaning.

Penn Hills newcomer Gia Visto has temporarily shuttered after health inspectors found the Italian restaurant had been operating without a valid permit, among other violations.

The WPIAL has granted postseason eligibility to Harris, a junior who transferred from Shady Side Academy, said WPIAL executive director Scott Seltzer. The WPIAL held postseason eligibility hearings Tuesday for Harris, Penn Hills teammate Camryn Price and Greensburg Central Catholic transfer Thomas Lloyd.

If Penn Hills makes the football playoffs as the Indians hope, quarterback Devin Harris is eligible to lead them.

Penn Hills Superintendent John Mozzocio detailed the changes in a letter posted to the district’s website Sunday. Penn Hills plays North Allegheny on Friday at the district’s Yuhas-McGinley Stadium.

The Penn Hills School District has implemented new site entry standards and an “increased security presence” at its home football games this season. The changes come after a shooting Friday in the vicinity of the Woodland Hills-Penn Hills football game in Turtle Creek.

"I felt like I had an off game. There were a few balls I could have played better,” Chase Delahanty said. "As a team, coach has mentioned in our meeting to play the final ball more over their heads rather than through their feet. We asked what ball they preferred, whether they prefer to make an outside run or inside run so we are all on the same page.”

Building strong communication with teammates isn’t a major mystery to Penn Hills junior midfielder Chase Delahanty. Sometimes, figuring out how to better mesh with your teammates means asking questions.

Soxman Funeral Homes in Penn Hills has a bereavement care dog named Lilo. The service dog is a yellow Labrador retriever, trained through the Perfect Fit Canines Service Dog Program in Wilkinsburg.

Seeing a dog in a funeral home is not what most people might expect — but Judy Ryave McGuire, director of aftercare and community outreach for Ralph Schugar Chapel, Inc. in Shadyside, and Laney, a 6-year-old goldendoodle, are a therapy team who provide comfort at funerals.

The donation wish list includes various types of soda and paper products such as napkins, paper towels, plates, aluminum pans and Ziploc bags. Festival planners also are accepting food donations such as individual bags of Fritos, taco meat, haluski, pierogies and sweet and hot sausage.

After the exodus, the library received interest from about 30 prospective board members and submitted a list of about 10 candidates to council in late May, according to Larry Choby, interim president of the board. Since then, the council, which took July off, has not acted.

Between March and May, Mary Mannella, Julia Madera, Danielle Ciniello and Brittany Fettis left their new roles for reasons unknown to Larry Choby, interim president of the board.

A preliminary investigation showed the victim lived in the home with a woman and a teenage boy. All of the individuals living there have been identified, police said, and there is no danger to the community.

Responders said they found a man who had been stabbed multiple times inside a home. The man was taken to the hospital, where he died. Officials have not identified the victim.
