Plum School District has over $45,000 in delinquent lunch accounts for about 850 of its 3,570 students over the past two school years.

While donations of aid are appreciated, they take only a small bite out of what is routinely a big problem.

An anonymous member of the Plum School District community recently gave the district $500 to cover student lunch debt at Holiday Park Intermediate School.

Winkler, 16, of Cheswick has led a senior prom and winter formal dance at Longwood at Oakmont in Plum, where she also works as a part-time server. She also started the Helping Hands club at Oakland Catholic High School in Pittsburgh, where students focus on volunteerism and community service.

A “souper bowl” drive to help tackle hunger is going on at Fox’s Pizza Den in Oakmont, 314 Allegheny River Blvd.

People can bring canned or boxed soups to the pizza shop through Feb. 11.

The program will feature the Zoomobile, which will bring four or five small animals for the group to meet and learn about.
