Olympia and the family of Timothy Green reached a $600K settlement, a day after the two-year anniversary of Green’s killing by city police, WITH 🔑KEY STRINGS 🧵ATTACHED 🪢 (also please subscribe so you can read this story and I can afford gas)

The settlement includes a new policy against police personalizing department equipment and mandated training for racial bias and crisis intervention. It’s not a huge dollar figure, but it’s a pretty big deal when you consider the relative number of training hours and how much cops LOVE to customize their stuff, particularly with The Punisher logos and Ferguson protest-inspired “thin blue line” flags.

In last week’s edition on gun rights and the Pierce County Sheriff election, a candidate’s quote brought a national issue closer to home: the number of police shootings and deaths in custody is on the rise in Pierce County. Link in bio for the second edition of The Weekly.

Sometimes candidates for sheriff say the darnedest things…

First edition of the PNW Justice Journal is here! An excerpt is below… please subscribe in bio!

Happy Tuesday!
Welcome to the first edition of The Weekly Pacific Northwest Justice Journal.
The inaugural main story focuses on next week’s primary election for sheriff of Pierce County, the top cop for Washington’s second most populous county and one of the largest police forces in the northwest. About a month ago, I went to the only public forum so far for the race and had one of the best burgers of my life. And, oh yeah, I learned what they told a friendly crowd about policing.

🌲 Welcome to the PNW Justice Journal!

Hey there, I’m Jared Brown – radio guy, newspaperman and now newsletter author? Columnist? Idk. I’m launching a new newsletter and website dedicated to in-depth investigative reporting, public records, and community engagement on the criminal justice system and civil rights in the Pacific Northwest. 🚔⚖️

We (I) will be up and running soon. In the meantime, subscribe to stay updated. Link in bio! By the end of August, I promise to break news that no other outlet in the state has. 🗞️✨

If you’re able, consider signing up for a $5 monthly subscription. I know, I know – but it’s like half a coffee in Seattle these days! ☕️ And every bit helps. And if that’s not in the budget, maybe a one-time Venmo boost? 🙏💸 ( eating a .bear brownie ice cream sandwich)

Expect a free (but not cheap!) weekly newsletter with important community info. And if you’re a paid member, an exclusive monthly edition with extra reporting, perspectives, outtakes, and yes, probably too much of my cats. 🐾

I need 1,200 subscribers from Washington and Oregon to cover my salary from my last job (we no Idaho ain’t forkin it over). Then, we can talk about paid contributors, a PNWJJ by JB podcast, merch, and all sorts of cool stuff! 🎙️🛍️

Thanks for bearing with me as I launch this important project. Your support means the world to me! 🌍💙
