Syncopation: A Memoir of Adèle Hugo by Elizabeth Caulfield Felt | Review | Historical Novels Review

Check out this fantastic review by the Historical Novel Society of Elizabeth Caulfield Felt's "Syncopation: A Memoir of Adèle Hugo." Here's a great quote from the review: "The author does an excellent job of presenting Adèle to the world as a woman ahead of her time yet held back by the social conventions of the era. This novel is billed as Adèle Hugo’s personal memoir, written only as Adèle could write it: scattered, sometimes tortured, passionate and very much told from…

If the Olympics were a literary rather than a sporting occasion, what kind of events would feature?

07/28/2012

Started reading a book a week ago while I was in Wisconsin in the midst of an unusually hot summer... now I'm in Australia and it's winter here... something feels wrong. Is appropriate reading matter dependent on the season/weather?

07/25/2012

Can't read an e-book on takeoff and landing, so I'll be packing both a Kindle and a paper book. Kinda defeats the purpose....

07/24/2012

Confession: I listen to hip-hop (among many other musical genres). And I wish there was a book that did justice to hip-hop music. Not a book of lyrics or profiles of rappers, but something that captures the spirit of the music. I feel like rock music has enjoyed several excellent literary treatments, but not so much hip-hop. Why?

07/19/2012

I'm on the waiting list for a few different e-books from the Portage County Public Library. Kind of ridiculous to have to wait for an electronic (and eminently reproducible) text to be "returned" by another borrower.

Once upon a time, Cornerstone Press had an intern. Today, I meet her to catch up over a cup of coffee. Nice.

Hope it went well today, Melissa!

Excited to meet with a book club in Waupaca, WI today to discuss the classic beach read "Whipped, Not Beaten."

Cornerstone Press's call for new manuscripts was recently featured in the pages of The Stevens Point Journal, and the phone calls have been flooding in ever since. Yay!

07/12/2012

It's me, Per, and I have an important announcement: It is with extremely mixed feelings that I announce that I will be leaving UWSP and Cornerstone Press, effective immediately, in order to take a job at Portland State University as the director of their Master's program in Publishing and their student-staffed publishing house, Ooligan Press. Former "ENGL 349: Editing and Publishing" instructor Professor Dieterich will be coming out of retirement to take charge of Cornerstone Press this fall while the English Department searches for a full-time replacement.
