As we start a new year, here's a few Facebook reminders:

1. Don't add people to groups without their permission, especially if it's for your business. Groups can be a good way to reach people, but if you don't ask first, you're essentially spamming them. Don't ruin relationships with your friends and potential customers - ASK FIRST.

2. You are never going to get money or prizes from Facebook, Apple, or any other big company via likes or shares. Those posts are annoying, may be trying to collect data (if your account has lax privacy settings), or are simply trying to boost their engagement numbers. Don't share them. If you're not sure, check Snopes.com to see if it's a legitimate offer.

3. Please remember Facebook means different things to different people. For some, it's a way to stay in touch with faraway friends, for stay at home moms it's a way to remain connected to the rest of the world, for others it's entertainment, and for some it's a business tool. Your way is not the only right way and there are many tools to make your Facebook experience more enjoyable -- hiding posts, unfollowing without unfriending, fixing your privacy settings, and more.

Once again: Facebook will NOT remove you as a fan of pages if you're not interacting with them. The only people being removed from fan pages are deceased or "voluntarily deactivated" accounts. You know, people who aren't actually on Facebook anyways.

BUT, if you actually want to support certain pages, please be sure to like and/or comment occasionally as you will see more content from them. You can also "Get Notifications" to be sure you see everything they post. Just go to the page and hover over the box that says "Liked." You will see the option to get notifications; click it, and you won't miss a thing!

With the huge number of pages out there and the impulse for us to "Like" everything, I'm pretty sure none of us want to see every post from every page of everything we like -- it would make FB one big advertisement. Use your discretion and get notifications (or interact with individual pages you care about) to see exactly what you want to see on Facebook.

"Facebook will be removing memorialized and voluntarily deactivated accounts from page’s like counts, which will reduce the number of likes if your business has a page."

If your page has lost some fans, don't worry! There's a logical explanation, and I'm pretty happy about it.

The social network will begin scrubbing inactive accounts next week, meaning some pages will see a drop in 'like' counts.

As I was driving the other day I noticed a bumper sticker that was just plain hateful. My mind went to "how can they feel that way" which quickly led to the overwhelming sense I get (often on Facebook) that we desperately need more love and understanding in this world. Sometimes it feels fear and anger have reached immense proportions. I witnessed my mind going to that place of sadness and said STOP. I knew this thinking wouldn't serve me or help any of the situations I thought about. My next thought was, I can't change everyone's fear and anger but I can make a difference in my work. And maybe it's a small difference, but it's what I can do. In the instant of this thought, an eagle flew right in front of me. Whenever I see an eagle, I trust that I am being given confirmation that my current thought is true. My own fear and anger left and was replaced by gratitude for the people I am blessed to work with. And in this place of gratitude, I am helping relieve the fear and anger.
