This Saturday on Down Yonder : 9.7.2024
Ordinarily, the first show of the month would focus on recent releases, but this month is different. Longtime listeners to KDHX will remember Jay Schober as one half of "The Brain Boys." For years, along with his long-time friend Jim Findlay, Jay hosted The St. Louis Brain Sandwich on KDHX, a weird, funny, and often irreverent show that consistently lived up to their maxim "Just stupid enough." They played funny songs and some serious ones, they played comedy bits, but mainly they just entertained themselves talking about stuff -- and they kept us entertained by doing so. Listening the The Brain Sandwich, you were eavesdropping on an ongoing conversation between two very good friends who had known each other a long time and who delighted in each other's company. Jay Schober passed away last month. This Friday 9.6, the Focal Point hosts a celebration of Jay's life (link in comments below). Which brings us to this week's show...
A long time ago, I did a special theme show that drew its title -- "Where'd You Come From? Where'd You Go?" -- from a line in the chorus of the song "Cotton-Eyed Joe." The idea behind it is that there are many pathways into any musical genre. And once you discover a genre, there are many directions you can go to explore its traditions and its variations. To illustrate this, I played different versions of the same song. One might be an old-time stringband version; another, a staight-ahead bluegrass version; another, a more progressive re-interpretation of the source. Jay LOVED this show. I gave him a cassette copy of it, which he wore out. Whenever I saw him at the Focal Point or the Maya Cafe, he would ask when I was going to do another one. I had intended to do another for a long time, but had neglected to do so. This Saturday, in memory of Jay Schober and in appreciation for the many Sunday afternoons I spent giggling at Jim and Jay's on-air shenanigans, I'm doing a "Where'd You Come From..." show.
Listen live at 11:00 am on KDHX 88.1 FM in St. Louis, streaming live at kdhx.org and on the TuneIn Radio app. See you yonder.
