Elvin Bishop) / Struck Down / 3:10 / / NEW / / 2024 / There are guest stars galore on the new T-Birds album, which initially put me off from listening. Omar's been experiencing a tough go the past several years due to a muscular problem (can't really play guitar), but this stuff is it! / Big Guitar Music

SET BREAK

6:33:00 PM / Jimmy Baby Face Lewis / Dusty Road / Ridin' With Jimmy 1947-1955 / 2:53 / / New / / 2024 / I took a flyer on this album and am so glad I did. Jimmy Lewis was one of the earliest blues guitarist to experiment with distortion and growl in a big way, and his sounds are pretty amazing. Sadly, he also more than dabbled in drug dealing, so extended stays as a guest of the State pretty much derailed his career. / Jasmine

6:35:55 PM / Pearl Bailey / I Can't Rock 'n' Roll To Save My Soul / Hi-Strung R&B Volume 2 / 2:20 / / New / / 2024 / Babies, they even had Pearl Bailey trying to make RnR records in the 1950s. Ha! This was released by Mercury Records in 1956. / KoKo Mojo Records

6:39:00 PM / Manzie Harris & His Band / Blues In The Morning / West Florida Rhythm & Blues / 2:46 / / / / 2023 / Release in 1951 on 78 RPM by the Sittin' In With label. Yes, I did have to look that up as the liner notes left that out. That said, Jasmine is becoming one of the go-to reissue labels, with generally great liners, after a bit of a rough start. / Jasmine

6:41:45 PM / The Contours / Whole Lotta Woman / Black Pearls Vol. 8 "Down In The Basement" / 2:47 / / New / / 2024 / Released in 1961 on Motown, penned by Berry Gordy and Billy Hoggs. The Contours were one of Motown biggest selling early successes. Oh, and Koko Mojo's 'Black Pearls' series is outtasight! (it's so good!) / KoKo Mojo Records

SET BREAK

6:48:00 PM / Buddy Guy / Heavy Love / Heavy Love / 5:41 / / / / 1998 / I love this particular album, maybe because the blues is front and center throughout, and definitely so being pre-TH's productions. Mr. Guy has announced his retirement, and I'm totally ok with that. For this reason - the man has earned it! 88 years old and entertaining people for over 70 years. Thank you so much for your music, Buddy. God bless! / Silvertone

6:53:40 PM / Phil Guy / 4 am Blues / Say What You Mean / 4:12 / / / / 1999 / Buddy's younger brother, who played wonderful, funky guitar, left-handed by the way, and sang eerily like his brother. We lost Phil all the way back in 2008, at only 68 years young. / JSP Records

I appreciate all the nice calls and messages. Please continue being good to each other! ESS

08/17/2024

COMING UP on Monday, August 19, 2024, on Rhythm Highways w/ East Side Slim 88.1 KDHX St. Louis! Each Monday, 4-7pm on 88.1

I got 'er done! It's hot outside, and was able to listen to a few LPs from my recent visit to a famous, local record emporium, so it's all good!

This week, you'll hear music from:
Watermelon Slim (performing live in St Louis on Aug 25); Garnetta Cromwell (blues and soul out of Montreal); Altered Five Blues Band; Jontavious Willis (another track from his fantastic new album); William DeVaughan (no, not that song); Rick Vito (new music); The Sensational Nightingales; Horace Silver; The Westside Andy/Mel Ford Band; George Thorogood & The Destroyers (from way back); Pearl Bailey (I kid you not!); and Buddy Guy (congratulations on a more than well earned retirement - doing his thing for over 70 years!) - and so much more!

Prayerful friends, please continue keeping my radio friends and mentors - no longer on the air, as well as still broadcasting - close to your heart, as they (we) continue to suffer deeply in their souls.
Please do the same for my beloved KDHX. Let this situation be a reminder to be good to each other.

Extensive playlists are available, and 2 weeks of archived shows are waiting for you to stream at your leisure, from the computing machine of your choice.
