A significant part of church history is Ascension Day. After resurrection Sunday, Jesus left his disciples with instructions to preach the gospel around the globe for forty days. Jesus then ascended into heaven. This marks the end of Jesus' earthly ministry and the beginning of ours. Ascension Day tends to fall 40 days after Easter because the Bible states Jesus met with people 40 days after his resurrection (Acts 1:3).
