For years, Del Mar residents have protested the rail realignment options that include tunneling under their city.

Over the last few weeks, Solana Beach residents have been caught off guard by a recently proposed alignment that would shift the route and construction impacts into their city, circumventing Del Mar.

During a June 26 Solana Beach City Council meeting, many of those residents emphasized their surprise and concerns in front of three officials from the San Diego Association of Governments, the regional agency in charge of the project.

Longtime Solana Beach resident Ed Siegel only received about 8% of the vote in the 2016 City Council election, but he’s still trying to resolve a defamation lawsuit against him and his campaign manager.

With a jury trial currently scheduled for May, Siegel and the three plaintiffs have been fighting over a $775,000 settlement agreement that Siegel has been trying to back out of after he signed it last year.

On Feb. 16, San Diego Superior Court Judge Robert C. Longstreth ruled to enforce the settlement, which requires Siegel to pay the three plaintiffs an immediate $75,000, plus $700,000 through a lien on his Solana Beach residence.
