The Greater Sioux City Press Club annually awards the Karen A. Luken Memorial Scholarship, in the amount of $1,000, to a college student studying Mass Communication or Journalism at an area college/university. The details are at the Siouxland Community Foundation website. But, the basics are this:

BACKGROUND: This scholarship fund was established in 2005 by the Greater Sioux City Press Club to provide assistance for college students pursuing a career in Mass Communication or Journalism. The name was changed to Karen A. Luken in honor of her commitment to mass communications.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA: Applicants must be a sophomore, junior, or senior in college that has declared a major in the Mass Communication Department or Journalism. Qualifying institutions include Briar Cliff University, Buena Vista University, Dordt College, Morningside University, Northeast Community College, Northwestern College, University of South Dakota and Wayne State College. Applicant must be a full-time student with a 3.0 minimum G.P.A.

APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Application must be received by the December 1 deadline and must include the following:

• Completed online application
• 250 word essay on why you are studying journalism/Mass Communication
• One letter of recommendation from a departmental professor of your major
• Official transcript of grades
• One to three sample(s) of your work (provide a link to your on-line portfolio)

My grandfather was one of a handful of soldiers in his platoon who survived at Camp Dodge where he was stationed near the end of World War One. There are many new reporters and photographers and also a few new judges, so the Sioux City Press Club will have another discussion session on covering trials and cameras in the courtroom on Tuesday, April 10th, at noon in the Woodbury County Courthouse, Room 201.
Chief Judge Duane Hoffmeyer, Court Administrator Pam Calhoun and Press Club President Woody Gottburg will lead the discussion.
I'm happy to say that also coming to the meeting are Steve Davis,Communications director for the Iowa Court system and Randy Evans, Executive Director of the Iowa Freedom of Information Council.
We hope to have representatives from all local news organizations and especially those who may be covering a trial.
It will be a “brown bag” bring your own lunch session for those who wish to.
If you haven't sent an RSVP to me yet, please do Monday.as to who will be attending and please share this with your news staff.
While this meeting is geared for working journalists, the general press club membership is welcome to attend if they wish to.
The meeting should last around an hour.

Hi everyone,

Yes it's true, Press Club will meet again to start the New Year with some annual business.

We will meet at the Sioux City Public Museum on Wednesday, January 17th at noon. The museum is at 4th and Nebraska and hopefully 4th Street will be repaired by that time.

Pizza & something to drink will be provided.

The election of a new board of officers will take place. Current officers, if you wish to keep serving, please let me know.

The Siouxland Community Foundation will present a program for us.

Also, we’ll be officially recognizing the recipient of the Karen A. Luken Memorial Scholarship at that meeting, Sara Alexander, from LeMars, Iowa, a senior at Morningside College.

Please RSVP to Woody by Friday, January 12th so we know how much pizza to order.
